- Abstract
- Describes the creation and results of a questionnaire survey of cataloguers in 6 Singapore academic and national libraries and of their vendor helpdesk staff to evaluate the help systems of library automation systems, with particular emphasis on the cataloguing function. Describes the structure of the questionnaire; the methodology used to analyse the data; the profile of the respondents and the systems used by them; and the implications of the statistical results. Functionalities for the following help features were surveyed: getting in and out of the help systems; selecting a relevant topic; formulating queries; searching of information; completeness and comprehensiveness of the help system; navigation to other topics; applying information to solve problems; and data entry and authority control in cataloguing tasks. Data analysis identified 27 preferred features which could be taken into account in the product development of online help systems

- Abstract
- Reports results of a questionnaire survey of the user characteristics of Korean student user groups in searching OPACs. The study examined the use of 5 selected OPAC systems in 5 academic libraries in the Austin, Texas and North Texas areas. The objective was to provide information on the characteristics of a specific group of international college students from a developing country in order to assist system managers in the selection of OPAC systems. The major conclusions of this study were: the academic level and age of students affect the preference towards an OPAC, but academic major of the students does not affect the preference; system designers should prepare more specific instructions regarding searching methods; there is a negative relationship between the number of searching methods that the respondents knew in using OPACs and the frequency of manual card catalogue use; and menu driven systems should be the first selection of OPAC systems for Korean students. Proposes recommendations for the design, adoption, or management of a new OPAC system

- Abstract
- Research in user behavior on online catalogs is in its early stages, but preliminary findings suggest that users encounter many of the same problems identified in behavioral studies of other types of bibliographic retrieval systems. Much can be learned from comparing the results of user behavior studies on these two types of systems. Research on user problems with both the mechanical aspects and the conceptual aspects of system use is reviewed, with the conclusion that more similiratiy exists across types of systems in conceptual than in mechanical problems. Also discussed are potential sources of the problems, due either to individual characteristics or to system variables. A series of research questions is proposed and a number of potential interim solutions ae suggested for alleviating some of the problems encountered by users of information systems

- Abstract
- A survey was conducted during 1987 to identify how online catalog users interact with various aspects of the catalog's authority control structure. Questionnaires were sent to major online catalog system vendors and to selected university libraries and networks known to have developed in-house online catalogs; additional copies were distributed to ACIG meeting participants during the ALA conference in San Francisco, June 1987. Twenty-one usable responses were received, twelve describing commercially available systems and nine from lacally developed systems.

- Abstract
- This is the first part of a two-part article that reviews 25 years of published research findings on end-user searching in online information retrieval (IR) systems. In Part 1 (Markey, 2007), the author seeks to answer the following questions: What characterizes the queries that end users submit to online IR systems? What search features do people use? What features would enable them to improve on the retrievals they have in hand? What features are hardly ever used? What do end users do in response to the system's retrievals? Are end users satisfied with their online searches? Summarizing searches of online IR systems by the search features people use everyday makes information retrieval appear to be a very simplistic one-stop event. In Part 2, the author examines current models of the information retrieval process, demonstrating that information retrieval is much more complex and involves changes in cognition, feelings, and/or events during the information seeking process. She poses a host of new research questions that will further our understanding about end-user searching of online IR systems.

- Abstract
- This is the second part of a two-part article that examines 25 years of published research findings on end-user searching of online information retrieval (IR) systems. In Part 1, it was learned that people enter a few short search statements into online IR systems. Their searches do not resemble the systematic approach of expert searchers who use the full range of IR-system functionality. Part 2 picks up the discussion of research findings about end-user searching in the context of current information retrieval models. These models demonstrate that information retrieval is a complex event, involving changes in cognition, feelings, and/or events during the information seeking process. The author challenges IR researchers to design new studies of end-user searching, collecting data not only on system-feature use, but on multiple search sessions and controlling for variables such as domain knowledge expertise and expert system knowledge. Because future IR systems designers are likely to improve the functionality of online IR systems in response to answers to the new research questions posed here, the author concludes with advice to these designers about retaining the simplicity of online IR system interfaces.

- Abstract
- Reports on the factor analysis of affective data gathered from a study of searching behaviour in 2 library catalogues. 20 subjects were assigned information problems to solve through searching a university card catalogue and 20 were assigned the same problems to solve in a comparable online catalogue. After searches were completed, subjects were asked to evaluate their search results and to respond to attitude measures about the search experience. The 11 attitude itmes were constructed to tap a variety of affective responses to the attitude measures. Factor patterns in the data can serve to identify the dimensions on which search experiences are evaluated by users, to direct further investigation into user evaluations, and to suggest features for inclusion in information retrieval systems accessed directly by users

- Abstract
- The degree of variability in the percentage of subject searching in an online public access catalog (OPAC) among branch libraries of one university was studied. A full semester's worth of transactions was analyzed, not sampled. The time units used were hour of the day, day of the week, and week of the semester. The findings show that subject searching varies from a low of 22% to a high of 74% over the hours of a day. Variability for the days of the week ranged from 17% to 64%, and for the weeks of the semester variability ranged from 12% to 70%. Valuable management information on the utilization of the OPAC within each brach library and among all the branch libraries is provided through numerous charts and graphs.
