    Abstract
    In einem Benutzertest, der im Rahmen der Projektes GIRT stattfand, wurde die Leistungsfähigkeit zweier Retrievalsprachen für die Datenbankrecherche überprüft. Die Ergebnisse werden in diesem Bericht dargestellt: Das System FULCRUM beruht auf automatischer Indexierung und liefert ein nach statistischer Relevanz sortiertes Suchergebnis. Die Standardfreitextsuche des Systems MESSENGER wurde um die intellektuell vom IZ vergebenen Deskriptoren ergänzt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass in FULCRUM das Boole'sche Exakt-Match-Retrieval dem Verktos-Space-Modell (Best-Match-Verfahren) von den Versuchspersonen vorgezogen wurde. Die in MESSENGER realisierte Mischform aus intellektueller und automatischer Indexierung erwies sich gegenüber dem quantitativ-statistischen Ansatz beim Recall als überlegen

    Abstract
    Der Artikel betrachtet anhand einer Studie zum Benutzerverhalten bei der Online-Katalogrecherche den gegenwärtigen Stellenwert und das zukünftige Potential der Web-OPACs. Dabei werden zunächst die Ergebnisse einer quantitativen Logfile-Analyse sowie qualitativer Benutzertests erörtert, bevor aktuelle Entwicklungen der Webtechnologie, die unter den Schlagworten Web 2.0 und Web 3.0 propagiert werden, im Zusammenhang mit der Online-Recherche und der Entwicklung neuartiger Suchverfahren kurz diskutiert werden.

    Abstract
    Unsere Medienwelt ist vom Nebeneinander verschiedener Ausgabeformen derselben Inhalte geprägt. Es herrscht jedoch Mangel an Untersuchungen, welche die "usability" von Printmedien mit der von Online-Medien direkt vergleichen. Im Rahmen eines Projektseminars am Institut fürBibliothekswissenschaft der Humboldt- Universität Berlin wurde die Usability von gedruckten und von Online-Informationsmitteln anhand heuristischer Kriterien verglichen. Als Benutzungsaspekte bündelndes und messbares Kriterium wurde der Zeitbedarf zur Beantwortung einfacher Testaufgaben ermittelt, die sowohl anhand der Print- als auch anhand der Online-Version je eines Versandhauskatalogs und eines Vorlesungsverzeichnisses zu beantworten waren. Die Prognosen sowie die Ergebnisse dreier Gruppen (Bibliothekswissenschaft-Studenten, Informatik-Studenten und Laien) wurden verglichen. Der Zeitbedarf für die Nutzung der Printmedien wurde von den Bibliothekswissenschaft- und Informatik-Studenten zu hoch prognostiziert, für Online-Medien zu niedrig. Der tatsächliche Zeitbedarf bewegte sich in ähnlicher Größenordnung bei beiden Versionen des Vorlesungsverzeichnisses. Bei der Nutzung des Versandhauskatalogs hingegen war der Zeitbedarf online doppelt so hoch wie beim Printmedium. Zusätzlich war bei Nutzung der Online-Version die Hälfte der Antworten falsch. Der Grad an subjektiver Unsicherheit über die Richtigkeit der Antworten wurde, damit übereinstimmend, bei der Online-Version deutlich höher eingeschätzt als beim Printmedium. Die Testergebnisse derdrei Gruppen unterschieden sich beim Versandhauskatalog nur wenig. Die Ergebnisse werden als Hinweis auf schlechten Entwicklungsstand der Usability von Online-Medien gedeutet. Die Usabilityvon konventionellen Medien scheint von "computernahen" Nutzern unterschätzt zu werden. Bei der Nutzung von Online-Medien wird in derLiteratur oft hohe subjektive Unsicherheit über die Angemessenheit oder Richtigkeit der Suchresultate berichtet, die hier bestätigt wird und zugleich mit einem hohen Anteil objektiv falscher Antworten korrespondiert. Es wird dafür plädiert in die Usability-Forschung konventionelle Medien einzubeziehen und stärker interdisziplinär vorzugehen.

    Abstract
    Im Rahmen einer Überarbeitung und Erweiterung des Internet-Auftritts der Stadtbibliothek Stuttgart wurde die Bedienerfreundlichkeit (usability) des Online-Katalogs (OPAC) der Bücherei wissenschaftlich getestet, um daraus Kriterien für eine mögliche Verbesserung herauszuarbeiten. Anfragen von Nutzern der Bibliothek und Beobachtungen der Bibliotheksmitarbeiterinnen hatten in der Vergangenheit deutlich gemacht, dass es offensichtlich nicht allen Nutzern problemlos möglich ist, den Katalog effektiv und angemessen zu nutzen. Da es sich beim webbasierten Online-Katalog um das Kernstück der Website der Bibliothek handelt, hatte seine Optimierung größte Priorität. Das Ziel sollte sein, einen Katalog anzubieten, der von sämtlichen potentiellen Nutzern mit den unterschiedlichsten Vorkenntnissen mit möglichst geringem Aufwand und einem optimalen Suchergebnis bedient werden kann.

    Abstract
    Die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft fördert in 23 Universitätsbibliotheken (Sondersammelgebieten), 47 Spezialbibliotheken und 3 zentralen Fachbibliotheken ein System der überregionalen Literatur- und Informationsversorgung. Dieses System kooperativer umfassender Sammlung weltweit vorhandener wissenschaftlicher Literatur sollte erstmals aus der Nutzerperspektive evaluiert werden. Es sollten Form und Umfang der tatsächlichen wie der potentiellen Nutzung sowie jetzige und zukünftige Bedarfe ermittelt werden, und zwar beispielhaft in den Fächern Anglistik, Betriebswirtschaft, Biologie, Geschichte und Maschinenbau. Das Projekt wurde 2002/2003 von der Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek Münster zusammen mit infas-Institut für angewandte Sozialwissenschaft GmbH durchgeführt. Diese Veröffentlichung zeigt den ersten Teil der Ergebnisse, die das Informationsverhalten von Wissenschaftlern und Wissenschaftlerinnen in den fünf Fächern betreffen.
