    Abstract
This article reports on an exploratory study of the measurement of commonality in the use of variables or measures by authors and groups of authors who have reported on studies of information retrieval system users. There is some similarity to co-citation analysis in that, when 2 individual papers, or 2 authors of sveral works, use the same variables, this indicates a similarity in approach to the subject. Such usage may be a stroger indication of similarity than co-citation be cause it represents what the authors did, rather than what they say

    Abstract
Usability evaluations and observations of users shopping at Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com) revealed some interesting user behaviors. The mixed behavior patterns were leveraged to create an interface for an e-commerce product. The author describes some design practices for providing a scoped search interface for an e-commerce site.

    Abstract
The degree of variability in the percentage of subject searching in an online public access catalog (OPAC) among branch libraries of one university was studied. A full semester's worth of transactions was analyzed, not sampled. The time units used were hour of the day, day of the week, and week of the semester. The findings show that subject searching varies from a low of 22% to a high of 74% over the hours of a day. Variability for the days of the week ranged from 17% to 64%, and for the weeks of the semester variability ranged from 12% to 70%. Valuable management information on the utilization of the OPAC within each brach library and among all the branch libraries is provided through numerous charts and graphs.

    Abstract
The authors have studied the transaction counts from two and one-half years activity at the public use terminals of the Ohio State University Libraries' prototype online card catalog to determine what search options academic library patrons use the most often and whether this pattern varies from that reported in major catalog use studies. The preliminary findings indicate significant differences in search strategy that may result from a unique user group that prefers to search the online catalog, more useful searches in the online system, or special search patterns imposed by the computer hardware itself. Both the different searches used by patrons and why they choose them should be important factors in the design of future online catalogs

    Abstract
The authors conducted a six-week queueing study of public catalogs in the Iowa State University library system. Data gathered are analyzed primarily to determine if routinely gathered library statistics can validly be used to predict catalog usage, to discover the ratio between the usage of the card catalog and the serials catalog, and to pinpoint the time of peak card catalog usage in order to measure more closely the rate of use. This measurement, then, provides one factor in a simulation model that can be constructed to predict accurately the number of devices needed for an alternative catalog format

    Abstract
Since the closing of the Sterling C. Evans Library author/title card catalog on march 6, 1989, librarians have observed a number of patrons who continued to use that catalog, even though NOTIS, the OPAC offered more comprehensive and current access to library holdings. To determine the reasons for this use, the authors prepared a one-page questionnaire, focusing on the users' preference for an inadequate card catalog in an environment which offers a superior OPAC. Card catalog patrons were then surveyed in order to gather data and build a user profile. Survey results were tabulated and analyzed, revealing the underlying reasons for users' preference for the card or online catalog. Conclusions will provide direction for improvements in users' access to online catalogs

    Abstract
The focus of this study is the search behavior of remote users of the University of California MELVYL Library System, an OPAC. Transaction logs from randomly selected remote user search sessions are analyzed. Descriptive data on the number and type of searches, choice of search mode and database, number of retrievals, number and type of errors, and use of system HELP facilities are presented. The search data have been cross-tabulated with demographic data on the same group of remote users, collected through an online survey conducted by the authors. Effectiveness of system usage is discussed. A case mode is made for the desirability of additional heuristics in the catalog portion of the system

    Abstract
At the start of the academic year reference staff are hard pressed to provide sufficient assistance to first time users of CD-ROMs, who have missed bibliographic instruction classes, or who need more guidance before searching. The literature on CD-ROMs was reviewed, and a survey conducted to estimate the training needs of searchers. It was found that 100% of the inexperienced searchers required assistance while searching, and 50% of their search strategies were later rated as poor. More than half the experienced searchers also needed the librarians assistance, and 31% of this group demonstrated a poor understanding of searching techniques. The survey findings were incorporated into CDIntro, a computer assisted learning package designed by the authors

    Abstract
Reports results of a questionnaire survey of lecturers and students, at Florida University at Gainesville, to determine the degree to which the information provided in catalogue records serve the needs of library users and the usefulness of including and displaying typical elements of catalogue records. Results indicate the highest level of agreement with usefulness of: title; primary author; date; subjects; other authors; and series. There were moderately high levels of agreement for: summary notes; contents notes; standard numbers; publisher; pagination; and related titles; and lower levels of agreement for reference notes; place of publication; index notes; illustrations; and size

    Abstract
Increased enrollments, changing student expectations, and shifting patterns of Internet access and usage continue to generate resource and administrative challenges for colleges and universities. Computer center staff and college administrators must balance increased access demands, changing system loads, and system security within constrained resources. To assess the changing academic computing environment, computer center directors from several geographic regions were asked to respond to an online questionnaire that assessed patterns of usage, resource allocation, policy formulation, and threats. Survey results were compared with data from a study conducted by the authors in 1999. The analysis includes changing patterns in Internet usage, access, and supervision. The paper also presents details of usage by institutional type and application as well as recommendations for more precise resource assessment by college administrators.

    Abstract
In this study, Texas A&M University faculty and graduate students from 16 departments completed a survey about their methods of finding videocassettes in the library, how they searched the online catalog LibCat for videocassettes, and their perceptions of catalog record elements. Results demonstrated that the majority of respondents used LibCat the most often for finding videocassettes. They searched by title and were satisfied with known item searching. Finally, respondents considered authors of original works, actors, and directors as useful to both search and view in LibCat, while few perceived editor, consultant, and camera person as useful.
