    Abstract
    Patrons often browse through books organized by a library classification system, looking for books to use and possibly circulate. This research is an examination of the clustering of similar books provided by a classification system and ways in which the books that patrons circulate are clustered. Measures of classification system performance are suggested and used to evaluate two test collections. Regression formulas are derived describing the relationships among the number of areas in which books were found (the number of stops a patron makes when browsing), the distances across a cluster, and the average number of books a patron circulates. Patrons were found usually to make more stops than there were books found at their average stop. Consequences for full-text document systems and online catalogs are suggested

    Abstract
    Shelf arrangement, from a bibliographic perspective, constitutes a reading proposal of the collection to the users as well as a resource for management and access to the documents. However, the centrality of the call number testifies the near forgetfulness of the different proposals that came before it and the role of the collection of documents and the target audience in the elaboration of the organization, in addition to the overlapping of the bibliographic classification to shelf arrangement. This work is justified by the need to restore shelf arrangement, seeking to understand its fundamental aspects from the literature in which the activity was systematized. Thus, this paper aims at contributing to reorient the shelf arrangement as an activity of information organization, exploring its conformation in the Francophone literature, from the midnineteenth century up to the 1930s. As for the methodology, this is an exploratory research made possible through the historical-conceptual investigation of shelf arrangement found in the Francophone manuals of librarianship of that period. This study concludes that the activity was placed by that line since the nineteenth century, when its own terminology was developed under the consideration of the intervention of the contexts, using methods and guided by the diversity of proposals.

    Abstract
    This article examines changing views on "systematic" or classified shelf-arrangement in German library science from Kayser's 1790 work Ueber die Manipulation bey der Einrichtung einer Bibliothek to the 1914 Versammlung deutscher Bibliothekare in Leipzig, at which Georg Leyh delivered the seminal paper, "Systematische oder mechanische Aufstellung?" Systematic arrangement was, with few exceptions, held up as an ideal throughout the nineteenth century; but by 1914 it could be agreed to belong to a past era in which, in the words of Leyh, libraries ran as a "Kleinbetrieb" [small business] (Leyh 1913, 100, "Das Dogma von der systematischen Aufstellung II-IV." Zentralblatt für Bibliothekswesen 30:97-135). In particular, this article seeks to explore how changing views on the ideal of systematic shelf-arrangement in German library science during this period reflected evolving conceptions of librarianship. For nineteenth-century writers such as Ebert, Molbech, and Petzholdt, systematic classification and arrangement had meaning against the backdrop of an encyclopedic tradition within which libraries and librarians played an important role in organizing and presenting a rational overview of the universe of knowledge - an overview that was to be both physical and intellectual. The waning of the ideal of systematic arrangement at the turn of the twentieth century was associated with a sense of loss, as an intellectual or "scholarly" tradition of librarianship was seen to give way to more utilitarian and "bureaucratic" expectations. The changing fortunes of the ideal of systematic arrangement in German library science between 1790 and 1914 may be seen to illustrate how progress and loss are often inextricably linked in the history of libraries and librarianship

    Abstract
    Investigates what effect the shelf classification of fiction had on the way that library users in the 2 branch libraries of Kajanni, Finland, use the library's stock of fiction and how they loan fiction. In 1 library the fiction stock was divided in 11 shelf categories, based on genres of fiction - in the other no changes were made. The books were also indexed and classified in the library's database. The project lasted for 3 years and the results were gathered by interviewing clients and making statistical analysis on loans in both libraries

    Abstract
    A review of the current use of reader-interest classification since 1980 as an alternative arrangement of bookstock to traditional classification. Reader-interest classification is known by a variety of names and used in many countries. With a current trend to make libraries more accessible and user-friendly, librarians are experimenting with reader-interest classification. The paper discusses the reasons for using it, principles, catalog aspects, what it brings together and separates, implementation, arrangement and presentation of the bookstock, the kind and size of library where it is in use and the outlook for its continued use. Recent studies and surveys are also considered.

    Abstract
    This article examines whether academic libraries are still reclassifying materials, how they are doing so, and if the acquisition of electronic materials has an impact on reclassification efforts. An online survey was sent to the heads of cataloging units at libraries belonging to the Association of Research Libraries to answer these questions. Almost one-third of libraries are currently involved in reclassification projects. Most respondents reported they do not believe that purchasing e-books has affected their decisions about reclassification. The article also examines the faceted search capability of next-generation catalogs and their possible impact on patrons' use of classification.

    Abstract
    In the late seventies, I was asked to work on classifying our Philosophy (and Psychology) collections, which were still located partly in the stacks and partly in the so-called Seminars-a traditional didactic and research structure of our School-where the books were mostly ordered by format or collection title. As often happens, my task was not completely free of restrictions: the general "new policy" of the entire Library was oriented toward accomplishing an open-shelf decimal classification, and the first step was to avoid an overly complicated schema, as this would probably have rendered more difficult the task of the end users, that is, our students but mainly our teaching staff. At the Scuola Normale Superiore, where historicism has always had an illustrious though somewhat cumbersome tradition (I quote only two philosophers and/or historians of Philosophy: Giovanni Gentile and Eugenio Garin), ordering the Philosophy collection- with its divisions, topics, geographical notations, chronological tables et similia-strictly by the Dewey decimal system might have been unthinkable. A second requirement was to designate a main location to the large collection of the often "complete works" of the philosophical Tradition. This way, the ideal Reader, foreseen to linger for hours in the newly restored library building of the Palazzo della Gherardesca, could easily access the reservoir of the great texts, which were to be followed on the shelves by the secondary literature ad auctorem. All in all, the implicit message to our students and scholars was to be the virtuous necessity of finding, ready on the shelves, the substantial core of the textual Tradition.
    Arranged only in alphabetic order without any chronological partition (with the Cutter numbers as additional support), the Authors were meant to constitute (an actually are) the main section of our Philosophy collection. However, there was a further, even more challenging exception: the Greek and Latin Classics had to be "attracted" by the underlying Philology Seminar, where a formidable collection that is constantly enriched by donors and former professors of the Scuola Normale, from Giorgio Pasquali to Arnaldo Momigliano, had to embody the Ancient Philosophy as a tribute to the German traditional unity of the Antike. Therefore, in our library, medieval philosophy is arranged as a new Beginning, perhaps in consolatory and coherent balance with the spectacular structure of the town, which can be admired from the windows of the magnificent building where we are housed, including Count Ugolino's tower!

    During the last century, the concept of reader-interest classifications and its related terminology have shown a well-established presence and commonly-agreed characteristics in the literature and other classification discourses. During the period 1952-1995, it was not unusual to find works, projects, and discourses using a common core of characteristics and terms to refer to a recognizable type of projects involving alternative classifications to the DDC and other traditional practices in libraries. However, although similar projects and characteristics are being used until the present day, such as those of implementation of BISAC in public libraries, the use of reader-interest classification-related terms and references have drastically declined since 1995. The present work attempts to overview the concept and terminology of reader-interest classifications in a historical perspective emphasizing the transformation of the concept and its remaining characteristics in time.

    Abstract
    The Thurgau Canton Library of the town of Frauenfeld/Switzerland contributes an insight into the way the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) was introduced there, as well as into the experience made with Dewey in everyday library practice for approx. five years. In the Canton Library the DDC is used not only for subject analysis but also for shelf arrangement of 13,000 media presently.

    Abstract
    Describes plans to automate the LoC shelf list which consists of around 13.335.000 3x5 inch cards. The card shelf list records the holdings and location information for all monographs and some serial receiving LC classification and is used to determine the correct filing position and unique full card number for new materials so that they are properly shelved within the existing collection. A Shelflist Task Group, set up in Oct. 94, has recommended a retrospective conversion of the existing card shelf list to an online system which would support a call number assignment and maintenance and online inventory control. The benefits of an online shelf list are outlined and the outlook appears positive for a commitment on the part of the library to automate both the process of shelflisting and the shelf list as an inventory control

    Abstract
    This paper focuses on the job undertaken between 2003 and 2004 in order to plan a new location arrangement for the Philosophy collection of one of the libraries at the University of Trieste. The paper describes the basic needs which played a fundamental role in the planning phase. Furthermore, it examines in detail how the most widely known classification systems - particularly the DDC- did not seem the best answer to the specific needs in this context. The solution was to develop an original classification system in order to answer the specific needs. The paper describes its development and the basis upon which it was built: the classification schemes used were those of the most authoritative periodical bibliographies in this field. Among them, the International Philosophical Bibliography system seemed to be closer to the continental tradition of the organization of knowledge in the discipline. Conclusions deal with the management of the transition from the old to the new system giving some information about the possible evaluation of the work that has been carried out.

    The debate over how periodical collections are best organised has simmered since the 1940s.     Abstract
    Understanding book-locating behavior in libraries is important and leads to more effective services that support patrons throughout the book-locating process. This study adopted a design-based approach to incorporate robotic assistance in investigating the book-locating behaviors of child patrons, and developed a service robot for child patrons in library settings. We describe the iterative cycles and process to develop a robot to assist with locating resources in libraries. Stakeholders, including child patrons and librarians, were consulted about their needs, preferences, and performance in locating library resources with robotic assistance. Their needs were analyzed and incorporated into the design of the library robot to provide comprehensive support. The results of the study suggest that the library robot was effective as a mobile and humanoid service agent for providing motivation and knowledgeable guidance to help child patrons in the initially complicated sequence of locating resources.

    Abstract
    Library patrons have innate expectations about how documents should be arranged. Useful classification schemes are those which conform to these expectations and are thereby psychologically comfortable. All schemes necessarily deviate from these expectations, but not to the same degree. The greater the divergence from this mental standard with a scheme, the greater the psychological discomfort the patron will experience and the less useful the patron will find it. Using as an example the discipline of anthropology, this article develops a measure of the deviation of library classifications from collocation in mental space
