    Abstract
Reviews Science Citation Index CDE (compact disc edition) with abstracts, which is published by the Institute for Scientific Information. It indexes 3.300 national and international scientific and technical journals, offering cited references for each article and the ability to search by related records. With a year's subscription costing $ 14.783, the CD is priced for only the largest libraries and corporate research facilities. For smaller libraries it would be cheaper and more current to go online

    Abstract
The 1st book auctions for which printed catalogues were issued started in the Netherlands around 1600. However, few catalogues survive before the start of the 19th century. Such early catalogues frequently represent the collections of individuals or of institutions, including libraries. Details of authorship, provenance and state of individual works varies greatly from catalogue to catalogue. For auctioneers commerical considerations are more important than bibliographical correctness. Despite their importance for tracing provenance, auction catalogues are frequently inadequately catalogued in libraries

    Abstract
Extracts from the official report of a study investigating the situation in French public libraries, The main reason for this evaluation is th proposed review of the role of the Bibliothèque Nationale, in relation to developing the role of France in the world information market. The results reported here cover the production and diffusion of bibliographic information. The overall picture is of a lack of coordination between products available and user needs, failure to establish standards for formats and for information technology equioment. The concluding recommendations emphaisis the need for coordinating initiatives by the various organisations involved in producing/diffusing bibliographic information, and establishing common standards to allow free exchange between bibliographic networks. Further studies are in hand to establish guidelines for future policies in more specialised library sectors.

    Abstract
In this special issue, the subject of national bibliographies is presented from a user perspective, limited to the role and function of national bibliographies for research. Prior to being guest editors for this special issue, we wrote an article where we examined if the metadata quality of the Swedish National Bibliography could be measured through mapping the level of user awareness regarding the characteristics of the data. We did not hesitate a minute when we were invited to act as guest editors for this special issue of Cataloging & Classification Quarterly.

    Abstract
National bibliographies provide interesting opportunities to search for new publications in specific scientific disciplines. This article gives an overview about the bibliographic potential of National Bibliographies in the German-speaking countries for spatial planning both in research and practice. Because grey literature plays an important role in technical disciplines, a national bibliography is a worthwhile source for information retrieval. Furthermore, this article includes a lightweight python-script to parse the bibliographic information from literature relevant to spatial planning and to measure the importance of grey literature using the SRU-API of the German National Library.

    Abstract
2 experiments investigated how textual factors influence the perception of bibliographical records. Subjects in the 1st experiment browsed indexes for the subject discriptor associated with the displayed record. Results showed that topical and broader descriptors are matched to records more easily than narrower descriptors. In the 2nd experiment, subjects ranked the relevance of descriptors for a bibliographic record. The interaction of 3 textual factors are reported: a semantic distance, direction up or down a generic tree of descriptors; and term overlap. Both experiments found that relevance perceptions degraded systematically with semantic distance, but the rate of degradation was different for top and bottom records. Term overlap modified these effects

    Abstract
Discusses the theory and practice of bibliographic control, provides a definition for a bibliographic centre and for bibliographic control in a national bibliographic centre, and discusses the current situation and future development in bibliographic control in the national bibliographic centre (of China). Makes some suggestions for planning effective bibliographic control in the national bibliographic centre as follows: to collect materials; to recruit advisers; to set up a mission, goals and objectives; to make and implement action plans; to put in place the organizational structure of the bibliographic database; and to make plans for cooperating with other area or national bibliographic centres

    Abstract
The amount of scientific papers is growing together with the development of science itself; but, although there is an unprecedented availability of large citation indexes, some daily activities of researchers remain time-consuming and poorly supported. In this paper, we present Visual Bibliographies (VisualBib), a real-time visual platform, designed using a zz-structure-based model for linking metadata and a narrative, visual approach for showing bibliographies. VisualBib represents a usable, advanced, and visual tool, which simplifies the management of bibliographies, supports a core set of bibliographic tasks, and helps researchers during complex analyses on scientific bibliographies. We present the variety of metadata formats and visualization methods, proposing two use case scenarios. The maturity of the system implementation allowed us two studies, for evaluating both the effectiveness of VisualBib in providing answers to specific data analysis tasks and to support experienced users during real-life uses. The results of the evaluation are positive and describe an effective and usable platform.
