    Abstract
The most important bibliographic databases in Italy are surveyed. Among them are the Italian national bibliography, BNI, and the database devoted to Italian books in print, ALICE. Also included are specialized databases such as those in the fields of law, education, economics and science and technology. Because of the lack of an adequate infrastructure for online access, their widespread use has been delayed. However, recent developments, in particular the implementation of the national library service, SBN, promise improvement in the situation.

    Abstract
As part of a largerstudy concerning the scatter of library and information science (LIS) documents in bibliographic databases, this paper focuses on the publishing sources of a sample of 822 highly relevant documents. 67% were journal articles with the largest subject categories outside of LIS being medicine / health sciences, business, education, and computer science. Other journal titles ranged from popular and trade magazines to scholarly journals spanning the disciplinary map. The largest number of nonjournal items were conference reports, government reports, bibliographic resource guides, monographs, and nongovernment agency reports. These were scattered mostly between technological and medical databases. The results show that LIS is an interdisciplinary field, borrowing and supplying information to and from other disciplines. Articles written about the application of LIS concepts to other fields are often published in the journals of those other fields, not in LIS journals

    Abstract
This article describes how the original ERIC was established as a conventional, centralized information center within the Office of Education in 1964, and how this initial ERIC was transformed from into a decentralized national system about 18 months later. The history of the two ERICs also illustrates how knowledge and expertise - in this case, that represented by advances in information systems technology and its applications - combined with interpersonal relationships within a bureaucracy, federal funding decisions, and organizational changes to shape the development of a major national information service. The time period covered by the article is from 1959, when planning for the first ERIC began, to June 1967, when the decentralized system became fully operational. Most of the description and analysis, however, is limited to the 1965-66 period, when the decentralized system was conceptualized and implemented. Important developments in ERIC since 1967 are also described

    Abstract

    Abstract
Defines bibliographic utilities. The databases maintained by most bibliographic utilities are essentially online union catalogues. Describes 7 organisations that offer online, timeshared cataloguing support services in North America: OCLC; RLIN; the Western Library Network (WLN); Utlas; the AGILE 3 system; the Interactive Access System; and Open DRANET. Discusses equipment and communications; database characteristics; record retrieval; cataloguing support; output products; related products and services; and utilities versus CD-ROM

    Abstract
Since its introduction as a library resource in 1984, the use of CD-ROM technology has proliferated among a multitude of vendors. In 1987, Ulrich's, a major supplier of serials information, jumped on the bandwagon when the entire data bases of Ulrich's International Periodicals Directory and Ulrich's Irregular Serials and Annuals become available on CD-ROM as Ulrich's Plus. The next year, Ebsco introduced The Serials Directory in CD-ROM version. Examines and compares these data base systems as reference tools.

    Abstract

    Abstract
In 1977 the International Congress on National Bibliographies (ICNB) was convened in Paris to develop guidelines for a current national bibliography in printed format. At the IFLA New Dehli meetings the ICNB 1977 Recommendations were reviewed. A Second International Congress on National Bibliographies is being planned to establish guidelines to cover publication of the national bibliographies through new technologies, to discuss the feasibility of raising the minimum requirements in all formats for national bibliographies to better reflect what is published in a country, to investigate more effective methods of proper legal deposit and to investigate feasibiblity of drafting similar recommendations for retrospective national bibliographies. Presents the discussion report of the Division of Bibliographic Control meeting

    Abstract
The 1991 IFLA programme given by the section on bibliography presented the theme that national bibliography becomes part of national memeory by recording the publications of the nation. Examines whether the widely distributed publications of popular culture are 'forgotten' by national bibliography. Considers the bibliographic control of newspapers, mass market publications and erotica in the US bibliographic control system. For the last 2 categories, searches selected titles in the OCLC database where many publications were found with wide distribution but recorded by few or no libraries. Popular culture materials should be recorded in national bibliographies to provide a more extended and historically accurate national memory

    Abstract
Describes the history and origins of the International Institute of Bibliography, founded in 1895 and which later became the FID. Outlines the work of Paul Otlet and his colleagues in developing the idea of universal bibliographic control through the Répertoire Bibliographique Universel and the emergence of the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) as the means of its classifies arrangement. Stresses the key role played by this work in developing the main concepts of information science and documentation
