Abstract

Diese Einführung möchte dem Anfänger den Umgang mit Literaturverzeichnissen erleichtern. Dazu werden die Verfahren der bibliographischen Literaturverzeichnung sowie die einzelnen Verzeichnistypen eingehend beschrieben; außerdem wird die Technik der wissenschaftlichen Literatursuche dargestellt. Zahlreiche Beispiele erläutern diesen praktischen Teil Darüber hinaus werden Herstellung und ge- schichtliche Entwicklung der Literaturverzeichnisse sowie moderne Vorhaben und Tendenzen skizziert. Das Buch wendet sich an angehende Bibliothekare, Dokumentare und Buchhändler sowie an Studenten aller Fachrichtungen.

Abstract

Die 'Empfehlungen des Wissenschaftsrates zur retrospektiven Katalogisierung an wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken' führten zum Projektantrag auf Förderung durch die DFG zum Aufbau eines Verbundkataloges maschinenlesbarer Katalogdaten als Datenressource für die retrospektive Katalogisierung. Dieser Bericht gibt einen Überblick über die durchgeführten Arbeiten bis zur Produktion der VK-Produkte. Beschrieben werden die Arbeitsschritte von den Vereinbarungen mit den regionalen Verbundsystemen, den Formatfestlegungen, den neuen Programmentwicklungen (besonders den Dublettenprüfungen und Ansigelverfahren), dem Aufbau des Online-Systems sowie den entwickelten Verfahren zur Datenübernahme

Rez. in: ABI-Technik 21(2002) H.3, S.293 (I. Hort): "Schon zwei Jahre nach dem ersten Erscheinen konnte Hans Hehl 2001 sein Werk über die "Elektronische Bibliothek" in einer neuen Auflage vorlegen. Das Hauptgewicht der Darstellung bilden die Möglichkeiten der Literatursuche und -beschaffung im Internet. Daneben wird jedoch - und dies stellt eine Erweiterung gegenüber der ersten Ausgabe dar - auch auf das Auffinden sonstiger Fachinformationen im "Netz der Netze" eingegangen. Der Blickwinkel, den Hehl bei seiner Darstellung einnimmt, ist stets derjenige des Suchenden. Für ihn stellt er eine Vielzahl von Strategien dar, mit deren Hilfe die gewünschten Informationen aufgespürt werden können. Die empfohlenen Vorgehensweisen werden dabei oft durch ausführliche Beispiele illustriert. Knapp gehalten sind hingegen die Hinweise zur Funktionsweise der besprochenen Instrumente. Etwas umfangreichere Basisinformationen könnten hier sicher das Problembewusstsein der InternetNutzer/innen schärfen und es erleichtern, eine qualifizierte Entscheidung für eine bestimmte Vorgehensweise zu treffen. So wäre beispielsweise eine Darstellung der Ranking-Verfahren, die die gängigen Suchmaschinen bei der Präsentation der Treffer einsetzen, wünschenswert gewesen. Ein grundsätzliches Problem, mit dem jede Buchveröffentlichung zum Thema Internet konfrontiert wird, ist der durch die raschen Wandlungen des Mediums hervorgerufene Aktualitätsverlust der in gedruckter Form dargebotenen Informationen. So trifft man, wenn man die präsentierten Beispiel nachvollziehen will, u. U. eine veränderte Oberfläche mit neuen Funktionen an. Für die in seiner Monographie erwähnten Internet-Adressen versucht Hehl den "Informationsverfall" durch eine unter der URL http://www.kulturserver.de/home/hhehl/connect/ links.htm bereitgehaltenen Liste auszugleichen. Breiten Raum nimmt die Darstellung von Suchmaschinen und thematischen Verzeichnissen sowie der hier möglichen Recherchestrategien ein. Ein anderes Kapitel dient der Besprechung wichtiger Bibliothekskataloge, ergänzt durch eine tabellarische Auflistung weiterer interessanter Adressen. Beziehen die Ausführungen von Hehl sich ansonsten auf Angebote im WWW, so fügt er an dieser Stelle ein Kapitel über Telnetverbindungen und Telnetrecherchen ein. Dies trägt der Tatsache Rechnung, dass es immer noch einige Bibliotheken gibt, die ihre Kataloge nur über einen Telnetzugang präsentieren. Ihre Zahl verringert sich allerdings, und viele der von Hehl aufgeführten Verbindungen sind inzwischen obsolet. Bei der Erörterung von Datenbanken liegt das Schwergewicht auf frei verfügbaren Quellen, aber auch wichtige kommerzielle Angebote werden vorgestellt. Im Kapitel über Elektronische Publikationen wird deren ganze Vielfalt angesprochen. So reicht der Bogen von Büchern über Zeitschriften, Reports und Preprints bis zu Dissertationen und Gesetzestexten. Aber auch Veröffentlichungen, die im weiteren Sinne dem Gebiet der elektronischen Publikationen zuzuordnen sind wie Statistiken, landeskundliche Übersichten und Online-Vorlesungen, werden angesprochen. Die abschließende Darstellung der Literaturbeschaffung über das Internet setzt den Schwerpunkt auf "Subito". Ein in dieser Auflage neuer Anhang ist der Darstellung des von Hehl selbst entwickelten Multisuchsystems EConnect gewidmet. Dieses bietet die Option über ein einheitliches Eingabefeld eine einfache Suche in verschiedenen Datenbanken durchzuführen. Über Linksysteme besteht ferner die Möglichkeit, die erhaltenen Nachweise ggf. direkt mit dem elektronischen Volltext oder Bestandsnachweisen der zitierten Journale in einem Verbundkatalog zu verbinden. Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass das vorliegende Werk Anfänger, die sich in die Möglichkeiten der bibliothekarischen Informationsbeschaffung mit Hilfe des Internets einarbeiten wollen, dabei unterstützen kann, sich das ein oder andere Gebiet zu erschließen. Erfahrene können hier Impulse erhalten, ihre eingeschliffenen Routinen zu überprüfen und ggf. zu optimieren."

Wiesenmüller): "Im Jahr 1999 legte Friedrich Nestler, der frühere Direktor des Instituts für Bibliothekswissenschaft an der Humboldt-Universität, eine viel beachtete Neubearbeitung von Georg Schneiders »Handbuch der Bibliographie« (1. Auflage 1923) vor. Konsequenterweise hat er nun auch Schneiders »Einführung in die Bibliographie« (1936) bearbeitet. Bei diesem Text handelte es sich ursprünglich um den theoretischen Teil des »Handbuchs«, der bei den Rezensenten auf wenig Anklang gestoßen war. Für die 4. Auflage (1930) wurde er gestrichen, erschien jedoch sechs Jahre später in umgearbeiteter Form als eigenständige Publikation. In Schneider sieht Nestler einen direkten Vorgänger für seine - nicht zuletzt durch die Forschung in der DDR geprägte - Sichtweise der Bibliographie als ein »soziales Phänomen« (Seite IX), das sich »aus der kommunikativen Funktion der verzeichneten Texte ergibt« (Seite 28). Theoretische Modelle der Bibliographie machen denn auch den größten Teil des ersten Hauptkapitels aus. Dieses trägt zwar noch dieselbe Überschrift (»Begriff der Bibliographie«) wie bei Schneider, ist aber von 5 auf über 60 Seiten angewachsen und beinhaltet nun weit mehr als nur die Wortgeschichte. In einem Abschnitt zur bibliothekarischen Ausbildung kritisiert Nestler - ganz zu Recht - die traditionelle Vermittlung des Themas Bibliographie als bloße Abfolge einer langen Reihe bibliographischer Hilfsmittel, deren Charakteristika Stück für Stück zu erlernen sind. Dass das Aufkommen der elektronischen Medien hier zu einem »Wechsel der Optik« (Seite 16) geführt habe und seitdem mehr Wert auf eine theoretische Grundlage gelegt werde, kann die Rezensentin aus ihrer eigenen Erfahrung allerdings nicht bestätigen. ... Insgesamt gesehen bleibt die Neubearbeitung an vielen Stellen unbefriedigend. Dennoch ist es zu begrüßen, dass sie überhaupt erschienen ist: Gerade weil man sich an manchem reiben kann, könnte Nestlers Arbeit Anlass sein, sich von neuem mit dem Thema Bibliographie zu beschäftigen."

Volume 1 is divided into three parts. Part One (Chapters 1 and 2) constitutes an introduction to the reference process and automated reference services. Part Two, "Information: Control and Access," consists of Chapters 3 through 6 and covers an introduction to bibliographies, indexing, and abstracting services. Chapters 7 through 12 are in Part Three, "Sources of Information," which include encyclopedias, various ready reference sources, biographical sources, dictionaries, geographical sources, and government documents. It is as pointless for students to memorize details about specific reference sources, as it is necessary for them to grasp the essential areas of agreement and difference among the various forms. To this end, every effort is made to compare rather than to detail. Only basic or foundation reference works are discussed in this volume. But readers may not find all basic titles included or annotated because: (1) There is no consensus an what constitutes "basic". (2) The objective of this text is to discuss various forms, and the titles used for that purpose are those that best illustrate those forms. (3) The annotations for a specific title are duplicated over and over again in Guide to Reference Books and Guide to Reference Materials, which list the numerous subject bibliographies. In both volumes, suggested readings are found in the footnotes and at the end of each chapter. When a publication is cited in a footnote, the reference is rarely duplicated in the "Suggested Reading." For the most part, these readings are limited to publications issued since 1987. In addition to providing readers with current thinking, these more recent citations have the added bonus of making it easier for the student to locate the readings. A number of the suggested reading items will be found in Reference and Information Sources, A Reader, 4th ed., published by Scarecrow Press, in 1991. It is beyond argument, of course, that all readings need not necessarily be current and that many older articles and books are as valuable today as they were when first published. Thanks to many teachers' having retained earlier editions of this text and the aforementioned Scarecrow title, it is possible to have a bibliography of previous readings. As has been done in all previous editions, the sixth edition notes prices for most of the major basic titles. This practice seems particularly useful today, since librarians must more and more be aware of budgetary constraints when selecting reference titles. CD-ROMS are listed where available. Prices are based an information either from the publisher of the original reference source or from the publisher of the CD-ROM disc. If a particular work is available online, the gross hourly rate as charged by DIALOG is given for its use. Both this rate and the book prices are current as of late 1990 and are useful in determining relative costs. Bibliographic data are based an publisher's catalogs, Books in print, and examination of the titles. The information is applicable as of late 1990 and, like prices, is subject to change.
The ten chapters in Volume 11 are divided into 3 parts: Part One, "Information and the Community," contains two chapters to familiarize readers with various groups in the community, their information and reference needs, and how professionals attempt to serve those needs. Part Two, "Interview and Search," devotes Chapters 3 through 6 to the vital task of explaining how to isolate and understand the questions readers put to librarians as well as basic methods of finding the correct answer(s). The emphasis is an practical application of tried and true methods of interviewing and searching. Attention is given to both manual and computer searches. Chapter 6 is a guide to basic information about databases, including CD-ROMS. Part Three, "Library Instruction, Networks, Policies, and Evaluation," is comprised of the last four chapters and covers the activities of reference librarians when not responding to direct questions. This part includes hints an teaching people how to find information as well as the networks that help both librarian and user to discover what is needed. Chapter 10 discusses methods of deciding how well the individual has fulfilled the task of being a reference librarian. Only space and the fact that this text is for beginners limits what information it contains. First, many new developments and potentially important technological changes in the field of information are impossible to cover without turning to technical language and jargon quite beyond the average reader of an introductory textbook. However, basic developments are covered and explained, and there is a guide (via the footnotes and suggested readings) for those who wish to explore the future. Second, this volume is for students and working reference librarians and is intended first, foremost, and always as a pragmatic, practical approach. This is not to discount the importance of research and information science. Leaders and followers in those fields are responsible for much of what is revolutionary in references services today. There are other courses, other places where information science can be considered in depth; all that can be done here is to hint at the joy of the intellectual fields that open up to the information scientist and researcher. Students and teachers alike should be aware that much of the material covered in this book is updated, argued, and dutifully considered in several basic journals. RQ, the official voice of reference librarians of the American Library Association, excels in its coverage of the topics considered in this text. Library Journal, while more general, now offers excellent and timely articles an the new technology and its influence an librarians. The Reference Librarian, edited by the author of this text, offers specific discussions of single topics in each issue, and these have ranged from online reference services, to personnel, to problems of evaluation. And, not to be missed, is the nicely edited, always useful, and sometimes downright inspirational, References Services Review.

Abstract

Seit seinem Erscheinen 1923 liegt dieses zum Standardwerk gewordene Handbuch von Georg Schneider zum zweiten Mal in veränderter Gestalt vor. Die von Friedrich Nestler nun völlig neu bearbeitete Ausgabe behält den Umfang der letzten, fünften Auflage von 1969 bei, nimmt aber die sehr zahlreichen Neuerscheinungen aus reichlich 6 Jahrzehnten sowie die elektronischen verzeichnisse auf und trennt sich weitgehend von älterer Literatur. Dafür sind die Kapitel übersichtlicher angeordnet, um den Stoff strukturell zu straffen, indem die allgemeinen Kataloge, die Bibliographien der Zeitschriften, der Gesellschaftsschriften, der Hochschul- und Schulschriften sowie der amtlichen und der privaten Drucke anders zugeordnet sind. Die Untergliederung folgt formalen, alphabetischen und chronologischen Merkmalen, um das Nachschlagen zu erleichtern
