    Abstract
Reviews BIBLINK, an EC funded project that is attempting to create links between national bibliographic agencies and the publishers of electronic resources. The project focuses on the flow of information, primarily in the form of metadata, between publishers and national libraries. Describes related work carried out by the Library of Congress with regard to its Electronic CIP Program. Includes studies of metadata formats in use and an investigation of the potential for format conversion

    Abstract
The 1991 IFLA programme given by the section on bibliography presented the theme that national bibliography becomes part of national memeory by recording the publications of the nation. Examines whether the widely distributed publications of popular culture are 'forgotten' by national bibliography. Considers the bibliographic control of newspapers, mass market publications and erotica in the US bibliographic control system. For the last 2 categories, searches selected titles in the OCLC database where many publications were found with wide distribution but recorded by few or no libraries. Popular culture materials should be recorded in national bibliographies to provide a more extended and historically accurate national memory

    Abstract
CD-ROM technology has great potential for storing and anabling access to the type of data contained in national bibliographies. Their ease of replication offer security as well as enabling the information contained to be made more widely availaible. Of the 2 methods used to convert print to electronic data, scanning and keying, Chagwyck-Healey use the latter. In the case of national bibliographies on CD-ROM, new records are created electronically and old records are converted by keying. Chadwyck-Healey have developed an extensive CD-ROM list, focusing on both bibliographic and full text literary works, and has produced national bibliographies on CD-ROM for the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Spain (with the Netherlands to appear shortly). National bibliographies on CD-ROM produced by other bodies are those of finland, Norway, Bulgarian, Singapore and the USA

I am pleased to be included as part of this workshop. My contribution comes from my research and working with national bibliographies around the world, not from my expertise with the Dewey Decimal Classification system. With that disclaimer, I am ready to share my observations and experience in how national bibliographies and national bibliographic services use the DDC in national bibliographies, including a case study of the making of the Namibia National Bibliography

    Abstract
Contribution to a thematic issue on the impact of technology on resource sharing: experimentation and maturity. The creation of a nationwide bibliographic database has been the shared responsibility of the national libraries, the major bibliographic utilities, and the individual libraries. Libraries have contributed their local cataloguing records to the national hosts, the bibliographic utilities, which in turn made these records widely available. The emergence of local shared automated library systems has introduced a new set of stakeholders into this environment. Their participation in bibliographic networking will result in a decentralized nationswide bibliographic database stored in multiple locations

    Abstract
Describes a new RLG European Library Data initiative, the RLIN database, which will significantly increase the supply of catalogue records for Western European imprints and provide shared access to the holdings of major European libraries. Primary participants in this project are the national libraries of France, Spain and Switzerland. German and UK/Irish records will become available later in 1998. RLG is also previewing a new scholarly resource created in conjunction with the Consortium of European Research Libraries (CERL): the Hand Press Book (HPB), a record of publishing throughout Great Britain and its dependencies from the 15th through the 18th centirues

Reviews Science Citation Index CDE (compact disc edition) with abstracts, which is published by the Institute for Scientific Information. It indexes 3.300 national and international scientific and technical journals, offering cited references for each article and the ability to search by related records. With a year's subscription costing $ 14.783, the CD is priced for only the largest libraries and corporate research facilities. For smaller libraries it would be cheaper and more current to go online

    Abstract
Large Swiss academic libraries stock 3 million titles documented in computerized catalogues. This data will be amalgamated with the Verbundkatalog Schweiz (VKS) to produce a national union catalogue. Unified cataloguing rules, clear definitions for data storage, operational guidelines and active participation of the original VKS database are needed. The government will help libraries financially according to their degree of participation in the project

    Abstract
The 1st book auctions for which printed catalogues were issued started in the Netherlands around 1600. However, few catalogues survive before the start of the 19th century. Such early catalogues frequently represent the collections of individuals or of institutions, including libraries. Details of authorship, provenance and state of individual works varies greatly from catalogue to catalogue. For auctioneers commerical considerations are more important than bibliographical correctness. Despite their importance for tracing provenance, auction catalogues are frequently inadequately catalogued in libraries

    Abstract
The EC National Libraries projct on CD-ROM, managed since its inceptiion in 1990 by NBS, drew to a close during the summer with the production of a pilot CD-ROM, The Explorers, which combines subsets of the national bibliographies of Denmark, Italy, Portugal and The Netherlands. The bibliographies can be searched collectively or individually and contain some 34.000 serial and monograph records. The records were all converted to UNIMARC format so that they could all be stored in one physical database, and the retrieval interface for The Explorers is in Danish, Dutch, Italian, Portugese, English, French and German

    Abstract
Outlines the history of the cataloguing of incunabula in 19th century Berlin and of the production of the Gesamtkatalog der Wiegendrucke from 1925 to 1994. The method of description established in the 1920s under the direction of Haebler has shown itself to be still the most suitable in the age of information technology. Maximum participation by libraries would speed compilation and it would be in the interest of holding libraries for which the GW would be available as an aid to problems of identification of incunabula

    Abstract
The enforcement of the Press and Registration of Books Act in 1876 was the beginning of bibliographic activities in British India. In independent Pakistan, UNESCO had been the moving spirit in bibliographic developments. The 1st issue of the Pakistan National Bibliography (PNB) for 1962 appeared in 1966; subsequent issues too, appeared with a time lag of 2 to 5 years. The PNB covers only 30% of the country's total production owing to evasion of deposit laws by publishers. Numerous weaknesses were observed in PNB 1992 and PNB 1993, the 2 issues chosen as a test case, for instance: no uniform policy is followed for cataloguing and transliteration; inadequacy of DDC for classification of books on Islam and other oriental topics; lack of uniformity in choice of subject headings; and absence of authority files. The arrangements of the bibliography and layout of entries needs improvement. Recommends the computerization of PNB
