    Abstract
    Die bisherige Verzeichnung der deutschen Drucke des 18. Jahrhunderts stellt sich - abgesehen von der seit Beginn der neunziger Jahre laufenden Katalogisierung in der Göttinger »Arbeitsstelle Sammlung Deutscher Drucke (1701-1800)« - äußerst defizitär dar: Die zeitgenössischen Buchhändlerverzeichnisse und das GV-alt beruhen weder auf Autopsie noch erschließen sie die Buchproduktion vollständig. Die in den Verbünden vorliegende umfangreiche Titelmenge an Retrodaten hat großenteils ein ungenügendes bibliographisches Niveau. Um nationalbibliographischen Standard zu erreichen, ist eine Neukatalogisierung dringend erforderlich. Erst ein auf nationaler wie internationaler Kooperation basiertes »VD18« kann der Forschung das zur Verfügung stellen, was bereits seit Jahrzehnten als Desiderat formuliert wird: eine retrospektive Nationalbibliographie des 18. Jahrhunderts.

    Abstract
    Mit Beginn des Jahres 2021 wird die bisher kostenpflichtige Datenbank zbMATH in eine Open Access-Plattform übergeführt werden. Damit steht dieser Dienst weltweit allen Interessierten kostenfrei zur Verfügung. Diese Änderung des Geschäftsmodells wird es in Zukunft ermöglichen, die meisten Daten von zbMATH für Zwecke der Forschung und der Verknüpfung mit anderen nicht-kommerziellen Diensten unter den Bedingungen einer CC-BY-SA Lizenz frei zu nutzen. Im Folgenden beschreiben wir die Herausforderungen und die Vision, die sich für die Überführung von zbMATH in eine offene Plattform ergeben.

    "Die Bibliographie ist eine [Hilfswissenschaft]. Und zwar steigt deren Wichtigkeit mit dem Steigen der Buchproduktion. Nun gibt es Weniges, was für die kritische Lage der Wissenschaft so durchaus charakteristisch ist wie der Umstand, daß dieser steigenden Wichtigkeit ihre sinkende Beachtung seit Jahren parallel geht. [...] Die Bibliographie ist sicher nicht der geistige Aeil einer Wissenschaft. Jedoch sie spielt in ihrer Physiologie eine zentrale Rolle, ist nicht ihr Nervengeflecht, aber das System ihrer Gefäße. Mit Bibliographie ist die Wissenschaft groß geworden, und eines Aages wird sich zeigen, daß sogar ihre heutige Krisis bibliographischer Art ist. So räsoniert Walter Benjamin bereits 1928 über die steigende Buchproduktion und die Relevanz der Bibliografie für die Forschung. Seine Sätze haben - erstaunlicher Weise - nichts an Aktualität eingebüßt. Auch heute, rund 80 Jahre später, in Zeiten elektronischer Kataloge drängt sich die Frage auf, wie bewältigen wir die Flut der literarischen Veröffentlichungen? Angesichts der dramatischen Veränderungen im Bereich von Druck- und Vervielfältigungsverfahren, der nahezu unendlichen Möglichkeiten, Aexte zu publizieren und der Selbstverständlichkeit, mit der Menschen ihre literarischen Manuskripte inzwischen veröffentlichen, könnten Bibliothekare resignieren. Der Masse der gegenwärtigen Medienproduktion Herr zu werden, ist eine Herausforderung für alle, die sich mit Fragen der Katalogisierung befassen. Der zeitnahe und benutzerfreundliche Nachweis der Medien in Bibliothekskatalogen ist nur noch durch enge Kooperationen und neue technische Möglichkeiten zu meistern. Heute können wir zu jeder Zeit und von nahezu jedem Ort auf die Kataloge der großen wissenschaftlichen und öffentlichen Bibliotheken zugreifen. Der Gang in die Bibliothek kommt inzwischen an zweiter Stelle.
