    Abstract
GENESIS, from SCG, the supplier of the well established library management system BookshelF, is one of the first library management systems to run as a Windows product with a graphical user interface (GUI), and as such is one of the front runners of the next generation of library management systems. The article commences with a brief review of the characteristics of GUI-based systems and proceeds to examine the characteristics of GENESIS. GENSIS is based on a new database environment but retains the same package of modules a BookshelF: Catalogue, Circulation, Thesuaurs, System Defintions, Acquisistion, Serials, Management reporting and System Administration. The GUI interface is simple and easy to use. GENESIS has many of the the features that will characterise a new generation of library management systems

    Abstract
The library of the Prince Leopold Institute for Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium is a specialised research library with some 14.000 books and 550 current periodical subscirptions. Since 1990 the library has used Bib/SEARCH (version 2.9) library management program to provide online catalogue and database information facilities. The system is structured to enable easy transfer of data from other sources, and fields may be defined according to the library' needs. Despite minor problems such as the indexing routine, experience at the Institute has been positive. A new version of the system is currently under development

    Abstract
Computerized text retrieval and library management systems have not yet taken a desired shape in Indian libraries, though efforts are being made in this direction. Reviews the current situation in Indian libraries by means of a survey of 10 selected indigenous software packages. Briefly discusses the underlying framework and text retrieval and library management facilities in these packages and concludes that CDS/ISIS along with SANJAY with sonme further modifications, might prove to be the most suitable package for most Indian libraries

    Abstract
Describes the components and uses of computerized library information systems. Examines the rules stipulated by S.R. Ranganathan in his Classified Catalogue Code (ed.5) (CCC5) for the construction of catalogues and preparation of bibliographies from the point of view of their relevance and suitability for creating bibliographic databases. Compares rules of CCC5 with those of AACR2 and suggests modification of existing rules as well as incorporation of new rules. Concludes that in developing online catalogues or online bibliographic databases, it is neither essential nor desirable to follow strictly the rules of specific traditional catalogue codes such as AACR2 or CCC5. Describes a design for a prototype integrated database for a library system with the aid of CDS/ISIS software

    Abstract
Reviews Library Master, Verison 3.0, a sophisticated but easy-to-use database management software which, in addition to creating basic bibliographies can also be used for organizing other types of materials such as research notes, museum and archive records, and mailing lists. Library Master's main focus is on creating bibliographies to support research papers or other types of scholarly activity and it contains over two dozen templates covering many types of record. Lists of records can be searched in an number of ways, including by author, title, subject, record number, or by Boolean operators. Library Master will accept up to 65.000 individual records for each database and supports a number of citation styles. It can also extract pre-coded citations from the text of a research paper and create the bibliography from those references and is able to import data from a variety of online services

    Abstract
Many thousands of researchers are now using personal bibliographic managers such as Reference Manager, EndNote and ProCite to access bibliographic databases via the Z39.50 protocol. With the EndNote software as an example, this paper demonstrates how researchers are using a standard search interface to access diverse databases and download references into their personal databases. There follows an overview of problems involved in searching the Z39.50 servers of some standard library automation systems (Innovative Interfaces, GEAC, SIRSI, Endeavour) and of two vendors of non-OPAC databases (Research Libraries Group and SilverPlatter). The paper concludes with some suggestions as to how the library community can contribute to improving the effectiveness of Z39.50 as a research tool.

    Abstract
Reviews Pro-Cite 2.02 from Personal Bibliographic Software for an IBM PC/XT/AT or compatible machines. Pro-Cite is a full functioned database program that can be used to generate and manipulate databases of all sorts and sizes. It allows for full indexing, sorting, selecting in different ways and printing. It stores up to 100.000 records for each database. The only constraint on the number of databases generated is the capacity of the hard disk. Discusses specifications, performance, ease of learning and use, library applicability, documentation and support

    Abstract
Describes the value of using bibliographic management software to handle the process of downloading of references from online or CD-ROM databases. 3 critical tasks are involved: building the database of references to periodical articles, books or similar materials; searching the database created; and generating a list of selected items from the database. Illustrates the main downloading features of 4 popular software packages: Reference Manager; Papyrus; Library Master; and Pro-Cite
