Abstract

This discussion of Personal Bibliographic Systems (PBS) features deals with microcomputer programs that manage the input, storage, retrieval, and output of bibliographic references. Although various partially overlapping terminologies may be encountered in the literature such programs as EndNote, ProCite, and Reference Manager-three of the most popular PBS-have by now become household names in academic circles. Several dozens of similar programs exist, each with its own peculiar combination of desirable and less appropriate features. The names of over 100 PBS examples are listed in Appendix 2.

Abstract

Pro-Cite is a software package for managing personal bibliographic data bases from which printed bibliographies are frequently required. Condisers the kinds of project for which Pro-Cite is intended, and those for which it is not intended. In the latter category is included the management of large permanent data bases to which powerful online access is frequently required. Its strength lies in its specialisation: it provides pre-defined data structures for various kinds of printed and audiovisual output formats corresponding to a range of standard styles. Discusses the package under the following headings: editing, searching, printing and browsing, indexing, and sorting. Examnines the use of Biblio-Links which are reformatting devices used to convert downloaded on-line serch results to Pro-Cite format

Abstract

The library of the Prince Leopold Institute for Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium is a specialised research library with some 14.000 books and 550 current periodical subscirptions. Since 1990 the library has used Bib/SEARCH (version 2.9) library management program to provide online catalogue and database information facilities. The system is structured to enable easy transfer of data from other sources, and fields may be defined according to the library' needs. Despite minor problems such as the indexing routine, experience at the Institute has been positive. A new version of the system is currently under development

Announces WebSPIRS v3.0, an enhanced version of the Web gateway form SilverPlatter Information, Inc. The update is an http gateway that provides access to the WWW via SilverPlatter's Internet Subscription Service on the librar's ERL network, using any forms-capable browser. This eliminates the need to install individual search software at workstations. Features in the updated version include: a new, simplified interface; search history capabilities; record selection and marking capabilities; enhancements to the thesaurus; point and click record display options; 'message of the day' option; and enhanced online help. Abstract

CDS/ISIS is a menu-driven generalized information storage and retrieval system designed specifically for the computerized management of structured non-numerical data bases. The unique characteristic of CDS/ISIS is that it is specifically designed to handle fields (and consequently records) of varying length, thus allowing, on the one hand, an optimum utilization of disk storage and, on the other hand, a complete freedom in defining the maximum length of each field. Although some features of CDS/ISIS require some knowledge of and experience with computerized information systems, once an application has been designed the system may be used by persons having little or no prior computer experience.

Explains how it can help users identify documents and create a full text index of the words in each document. This allows the user to create a full text database of the documents, for both personal and Web based use. The database can be created either manually or by using a wizard, which prompts the user with questions that moves them through the creation process. It provides a number of retrieval options, including Boolean searching and proximity options. It is easy to update, using built-in reindexing utilities. Reports no significant complaints

Abstract

Archives collection managers have employed the power and flexibility of the MicroMARC for Integrated Formats (MicroMARC:amc: Archival and Manuscripts Control) first developed on the campus of Michigan State University, since 1984. Now this MARC based information and storage retrieval software has been expanded to accomodate all MARC formats. Examines MicroMARC for Integrated Format version 1.2 and its data entry, searching, and reporting features, along with its latest upgrades. Features of the software include the ability to tranfer records to and from local systems, make global changes to headings in the database, create additional indexes, and create reports that can be downloaded into word processing documents if necessary. The software can be loaded on stand alone computers or into a LAN using DOS, Windows95 or WindowsNT

Reviews Library Master, Verison 3.0, a sophisticated but easy-to-use database management software which, in addition to creating basic bibliographies can also be used for organizing other types of materials such as research notes, museum and archive records, and mailing lists. Library Master's main focus is on creating bibliographies to support research papers or other types of scholarly activity and it contains over two dozen templates covering many types of record. Lists of records can be searched in an number of ways, including by author, title, subject, record number, or by Boolean operators. Library Master will accept up to 65.000 individual records for each database and supports a number of citation styles. It can also extract pre-coded citations from the text of a research paper and create the bibliography from those references and is able to import data from a variety of online services

Abstract

The Stuttgart University of Library and Information Studies has collected interesting data from a questionnaire based study of CDS/ISIS retrieval system application. Replies from 34 worldwide users, all with Internet access, suggest that CDS/ISIS is mostly used with stand-alone PCs, and that there is much interest in the possible use of CDS/ISIS on UNIX platforms. In 19 cases, CDS/ISIS application s relate to library functions, while in the areas of technology, medicine and the environment most databases are CDS/ISIS-structured and designed for local or internal use. Abstract

CDS/ISIS is a powerful and popular software package for managing computerized bibliographic data. It is developed and maintained by UNESCO since 1985. It is free software available in binary form for MS-DOS, MS-Windows, Unix, and Unix-based operating systems like Linux. It is used by many libraries and organizations in many countries to maintain their Online Public Access Catalogues (OPACs) and other bibliographic databases. With the advent of the Internet and Web technologies, publishing the content of databases on the Web provides a round the clock access to the content from any PC with Internet access. Some CDS-ISIS databases are published on the Web, but many are still on standalone systems or on local area networks. Interoperability is the key for the efficient dissemination of information to end-users. The Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) provides a technical framework for interoperability of OAI-compliant digital libraries (UNESCO. 2004). However, CDS/ISIS databases are not OAI-compliant. In this paper, we describe a simple approach, to make CDS/ISIS OAI-compliant. It is based on printing CDS/ISIS records in an OAI static repository format.
