    Abstract
New digital video technologies provide a wide spectrum of multimedia user interfaces for computer assisted instruction on personal computers. Describes an experiment, conducted at the Software Engineering Institute, Carnegie Mellon University, Pennsylvania, using a digital video course on code inspection, to study and determine the effects of such capabilities on recall performance and attitude. Results suggest that the presentation of materials as motion video rather than as a slide show within an interactive video course leads to better recall performance. In addition, the presence of motion video in the interfaces and the use of surrogate travel (virtual reality) for navigation promote better student opinions toward the subject matter

    Abstract
Describes the development of UMLIS (University of Malaya Library Information System), a multimedia general guide to the library developed using Authorware 3.0 software. The guide provides information on all 12 libraries within the Malaya University library system, with details about the library type, procedures for membership, borrowing and returning; reservations; fines; regulations; opening hours; and services and facilities offered. Provides information on the library collection, CD-ROM databases and on the OPAC

    Abstract
Textbooks are more available in electronic format now than in the past. Because textbooks are typically large, the end user needs effective tools to rapidly access information encapsulated in textbooks stored in digital libraries. Statistical similarity-based links among hypertextbooks are a means to provide those tools. In this paper, the design and the implementation of a tool that generates networks of links within and across hypertextbooks through a completely automatic and unsupervised procedure is described. The design is based an statistical techniques. The overall methodology is presented together with the results of a case study reached through a working prototype that shows that connecting hyper-textbooks is an efficient way to provide an effective retrieval capability.

    Abstract
The role of the library in distance ducation is evolving. Guided by accreditation standards, libraries seek to meet the needs of distant learners through a variety of services and products. While the Internet plays a significant role in the access and delivery of library services, new information technology is being developed to meet the growing needs and demands of distant learners

    Abstract
The Internet, particularly the Web, is a wonderful free source of information that can vastly improve the array of resources available to library patrons. Unfortunately, not all information is honest and accurate, and some of it is not suitable for certain age groups. Students using the Web for research often come upon unsuitable sites. We can get around this by constructing Web learning environments containing safe sites for students. These learning experiences include WebQuests, Pathfinders, Treasure Hunts, Scavenger Hunts, and Tracks.

    Abstract
The interest of Australian academics in library and information studies is manifest in 2 themes: technology for information practice and technology for learning. These themes underlie the integration of information technology into education for information professionals. Surveys carried out in the early 1980s highlighted the applications of technology, particularly in online cataloguing and online searching. The study reported in this paper aimed to explore the extent of use and non-use od computer-assisted learning and teaching in Australian schools of library and information studies in the early 1990s. The results indicate more widespread use of computer-assisted learning than computer-assisted teaching. There is considerably diversity in courses where computer-assisted learning is included in the packages used by students. More than half of the schools surveyed have plans to extend computer-assisted learning over the next three years. In order to take full advantage of the potential of computer-assisted learning, academies in schools of library and information studies in Australia will need to cooperate with each other, with academics and industry-based colleagues in computer-based training and education, and with similar schools in overseas countries

    Abstract
Describes the design and development of a multimedia guide to learning services. Gives details of the package which encompasses library and computing facilities, subject resources, floorplans and site personnel. Discusses the problems associated with introducing large numbers of students to learning services and explores the advantages of the multimedia approach. Outlines the multipurpose nature of the package and describes plans for future evaluation and developments

    Abstract
Describes the University of Tennessee-Knoxville slide/tape tutorial for instructing the students in BRS/Night Search programme for end-user searching. Provides adequate coverage of basic points in the original outline, and frees librarians for consultation. The creation of an in-house tutorial has allowed the library to tailor a presentation to particular needs of a library. Plans to create another instructional package for DIALOG's Knowledge Index

    Abstract
Traditionally, reference librarians at Tennessee University taught basic library skills through a lecture format. Desiring to communicate more effectively with students, reduce burnout, and alleviate scheduling difficulties, the department decided to develop a computer assisted instruction (CAI) programme for English 102 classes. Discusses the development and implementation of 3 HyperCard modules to help students learn to find periodical articles, use the online catalogue, and search MLA on CD-ROM. Includes reactions from students, English instructors and librarians, and concludes with plans to develop CAI modules for other instructional needs in the future

    Abstract
Reports on a variety of studies which indicate how students can learn science through telecomputing and interactive multimedia activities. 2 studies reflect the newest trends in teaching science with technology concerned with telecomputing and an innovative approach to integrating hypermedia with science learning, which has student in several schools in Iowa working as programmers and instructional designers, 2 other studies considers new ways to look at both science/technology education and research. As a study of an international high school science project suggests a new methodology for researching computer-support collaborative learning

    Abstract
Discusses the development of systems designed to improve methods of teaching and learning in schools, colleges and universities, an area currently receiving substantial funding in many countries. Outlines the history of early 'teaching machines' to the 1986 Domesday project and the multimedia hardware and softwware today, focusing on current UK, US and European software developemnt support projects. Reviews the literature on multimedia learning, identifying 2 key difficulties to be overcome; in the area of assessment methods, and the need for a better understanding of the nature of learning and system requirements
