    Abstract
Discusses research issues related to the utilization of cognitive learning and instructional theory to design technology-based learning environments such as hypertext and hypermedia. A Theory-To-Design framework is a sketch which considers 2 main roles for theory: theory construction and testing and prescriptive artifact design. Another component of the framework posits that technology based learning environments employing a particular theoretical perspective should link theory elements to specific design features. The Theory-To-Design framework is then used as the basis of an analysis of theoretical and design issues raised in a recent hypermedia research project

    Abstract
A major difficulty of query writing for databases is that users do not fully understand queries. Proposes a system providing feedback to enable users to better understand their queries. It is a multi-functional rule-based system. In addition to providing an English translation for the query, it pin-points syntax errors, and suggests possible solutions. Finds likely semantic errors, and provides possible solutions. The system was implemented for a query language based on the entity relationship model. It is expected to lead to better user performance. Empirical testing showed significant improvement in user performance with the feedback system. The system can be used for computer-aided training and in actual operation

    Abstract
Describes End user Courses in Information Access through Communication Technology (EDUCATE), a 3 year project funded by the European Union and designed to meet the needs of scientists, engineers and information specialists. It involves the collaboration of 6 universities and is designed as a multimedia programme which can be used in a variety of ways including self instruction, as part of formal training course, and as a reference and access tool to information sources, and thus far, applicable in 2 subject areas: physics and electrical and electronic engineering

    Abstract
Reports on a variety of studies which indicate how students can learn science through telecomputing and interactive multimedia activities. 2 studies reflect the newest trends in teaching science with technology concerned with telecomputing and an innovative approach to integrating hypermedia with science learning, which has student in several schools in Iowa working as programmers and instructional designers, 2 other studies considers new ways to look at both science/technology education and research. As a study of an international high school science project suggests a new methodology for researching computer-support collaborative learning

    Abstract
Describes the University of Tennessee-Knoxville slide/tape tutorial for instructing the students in BRS/Night Search programme for end-user searching. Provides adequate coverage of basic points in the original outline, and frees librarians for consultation. The creation of an in-house tutorial has allowed the library to tailor a presentation to particular needs of a library. Plans to create another instructional package for DIALOG's Knowledge Index

    Abstract
Describes the development and evaluation, at Western Michigan University, of a multimedia self instructional tutorial designed to introduce library services and teach basic skills in a cost effective manner. Reports results of an evaluation comparing the tutorial with traditional workbook instruction. No significant differences were found between the experimental and control groups, indicating that the tutorial was as effective as the workbook. Includes implications for user education, along with advice for developers of similar projects

    Abstract
Describes the development of a Web Library Guide at Birmingham University, UK. Having developed a hypertext guide using Asymetrix Toolbook which gave guidance to users on the subjects and services available in the main library of the university, the information was repackaged for loading on to the WWW. Outlines the reasons for this move, explains the process of the transposition, and suggests future possibilities for the project

    Abstract
Describes a project which the library of the Univ. of Sheffield in England completed at the request of the British Library Research and Development Department between 1990 and 1992. The project investigated the application of multimedia in libraries and produced a multimedia demonstrator to train staff in handling the reference interview. Explains how the demonstrator was produced and the factors involved in the cost of multimedia authoring

    Abstract
The nature of computer based learning and the instructional environments that support it have changed dramatically in the past decade. Introduces a special issue consisting of selected papers from ED-MEDIA 93 - World Conference on Educational Multimedia and Hypermedia. Provides conceptual and historical organizers that overview these changes. These organizers will describe 2 continua for analysing these changes: a technology-based continuum and a continuum describing the range of information processing enganged by these environments. Relates these selected papers to these continua and describes briefly why they are important and have been selected
