    Abstract
A Times newspaper journalist counters the popular claim that electronic media, ranging from television broadcasting to CD-ROM books and information services over the Internet and WWW, will eventually supplant conventional printed books, periodicals, newspapers and other similar materials

    Content
Man recherchiert, man surft.

Describes the Electronic Book (EB) standard developed by the Sony Corporation. It defines compatibility with ISO 9660, the international standard for file structures on CD-ROM. The EB standard defines search methods according to word search, endword search, keyword search, menu search, multi search, graphic search and linking. Provides a summary of EB players covering the Sony DD1-EX, DD8, DD-DR1 and Panasonic KXEBP1. Discusses EB software

Explains why the SGML promises to have as powerful an impact on the publishing industry as the MARC record has had on libraries in terms of content, quality, cost, and timeliness of products used by reference librarians. Discusses the ease with which SGML can enable publishers of printed products to release them in electronic form: CD-ROM, on-line and braille, with reference to Scott Publ. Co. and Oxford Univ. Pr.

    Abstract
The proliferation of periodical titles and increasing costs of centralised document delivery systems, coupled with declining library budgets, has led to efforts aimed at automating the document delivery process. Reviews some of the research projects undertaken in this area inclu-ding: APOLLO (satellites), HERMES (high speed telex) and ADONIS (CD-ROMs). The emergence of ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Ntework) and its UK version IDA (Integrated Digital Access), as a document delivery medium is discussed in relation to the Quartet Project undertaken at University College London.

    Abstract
Examines the USA national context of electronic publishing. Before the visions of electronic publishing become a reality the following issues must be dealt with: market readiness, availability of public and private funding, delivery standards, enabling software, intellectual property concerns, and new pricing and licensing models. Examines CD-ROM publishing, customized college publishing, and electronic only journals and discusses the electronic distribution of traditional print journals

    Abstract
An overview of the development of electronic resources over the past three decades is provided, discussing key features, disadvantages, and benefits of traditional online databases and CD-ROM and Web-based resources. This analysis of gains and losses as information resources have shifted to the Internet provides a basis for identifying key issues in the decision to shift collections and resources toward purely digital formats. Ownership of content, licensing terms, and the proliferation of user interfaces are especially important and still unresolved concerns.
