    Abstract
    There is an "information burst" going on in our world. Therefore we think more about the role of information in modern society and in our personal life. The political waves of the peaceful revolutionary process virtually start to erase the borders of the countries drawn on the maps. A little more than ten years ago we had not even a concept for "Belarusian-German relations", because both countries "the new united Germany and the Republic of Belarus did not exist on the maps of the world. Today the communication between our countries covers all aspects of public life "culture" science and education. We have laid a foundation for our economic and cultural cooperation. We already have had some experience in the joint solution of internal and international problems. And "what is most striking" the warm human contacts of the people consolidate and accelerate the process of mutual understanding between our countries and broaden our view. Today no country in the world can yield their citizens more freedom of choice than the "state" of the Internet. The people, freely migrating in a boundless information space, know how to use the invaluable treasures of human thought and creatively increase the achievements of mankind by intellectual work. These people become the pride of every country in our time. In educating, shaping and supporting such persons we see a new social role of the libraries. It is clearly visible that libraries turn into modern information centers. The introduction of new information know-how and the access to electronic information by means of an electronic library satisfy the increasing need of effective and comprehensive information. All steps of the work with documents (publication "search" delivery) are automated. The fast electronic delivery of documents is promoted by the growth of global information networks, by the increase of transfer rates of dates" by the capability of online search in the electronic catalogues and databases connected with the automated systems of the ordering of copies, by the technical equipment and software of scanning and recognition of the text.

    Abstract
    Chemical information sciences-ranging from subjectspecific bibliometrics to sophisticated theoretical systems for modeling structures and reactions-have historically led in developing new technologies. Hundreds of papers are published or presented at conferences annually in this discipline. One of the more significant conferences at which important research has historically been presented is the Tri-Society Symposium an Chemical Information, an event jointly sponsored by the American Chemical Society, the American Society for Information Science and Technology, and the Special Libraries Association and held every four years. Eight years ago, the theme of this conference was the chemist's workstation; papers were presented an developments enabling chemists to access and process a variety of different types of chemical information from their desktop or laboratory bench. Several of these papers were subsequently published as a Perspectives issue.

    "Die Verbundzentrale des Gemeinsamen Bibliotheksverbundes (VZG) und FIZ Karlsruhe haben beschlossen, zu kooperieren und gemeinsam einen wichtigen Beitrag zum Aufbau der nationalen E-Science-Infrastruktur zu leisten. E-Science steht für "enhanced science" - die neue Form wissenschaftlichen Arbeitens. E-Science folgt der Vision, das Wissen der Wissenschaft global zu vernetzen. Voraussetzung dafür ist eine innovative, nachhaltige Infrastruktur, sowohl technisch als auch organisatorisch. Die VZG verbessert mit Unterstützung der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) im Rahmen des Projekts "Nationallizenzen" die Versorgung mit elektronischer Fachinformation an deutschen Hochschulen, Forschungseinrichtungen und wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken. Jetzt stellt die VZG ihr System für das Hosting von digitalen Inhalten auf eine neue technische Basis: die eSciDoc-Infrastruktur. Deren Kern bildet das international renommierte Repository-System Fedora. Die eSciDoc-Infrastruktur bietet durch zusätzliche Dienste, fertige Datenmodelle und vereinfachte Schnittstellen erhebliche Mehrwerte. Die VZG hat sich nach einer umfänglichen Evaluation der Software und der zugrunde liegenden Konzepte für das System entschieden. FIZ Karlsruhe wird die VZG bei dessen Einführung beraten.
    Zum Vertragsabschluss erklärt Sabine Brünger-Weilandt, Geschäftsführerin von FIZ Karlsruhe: "Als wissenschaftlicher Dienstleister und eScidoc-Partner fühlen wir uns der Nachnutzung und Verbreitung des Systems verpflichtet. Die Kooperation mit der VZG bedeutet einen wichtigen Schritt in diesem Prozess. Damit können wir die VZG effektiv und kompetent dabei unterstützen, ihre Leistungen im Bibliotheksverbund noch besser zu erbringen und wertvolle Kulturgüter der Wissenschaft und Forschung digital verfügbar zu machen." Reiner Diedrichs, Direktor der Verbundzentrale, begründet die Entscheidung: "Die durchdachte Architektur, der flexible Umgang mit Metadaten sowie insbesondere die konsequente Verfolgung des Open-Source-Gedankens haben uns überzeugt. Die eSciDoc-Infrastruktur bietet eine solide Grundlage für die weitere Entwicklung unserer Dienstleistungen." FIZ Karlsruhe arbeitet bereits seit mehr als drei Jahren intensiv an E-Science-Lösungen. Im Projekt eSciDoc entwickeln FIZ Karlsruhe und die MaxPlanck-Gesellschaft (MPG) gemeinsam ein System für offene netzbasierte Zusammenarbeit, Kommunikation und Publikation in wissenschaftlichen Forschungsorganisationen. Aufbauend auf seinen längjährigen Erfahrungen im internationalen Informationstransfer und Wissensmanagement hat FIZ Karlsruhe seine Kompetenzen in Richtung zu E-Science erweitert. Über das neue Geschäftsfeld KnowEsis werden in dem komplexen und beratungsintensiven Umfeld von E-Science innovative Dienstleistungen angeboten. Dazu gehören Consulting, Schulung und kundenspezifische Entwicklungen ebenso wie Support sowohl für die eSciDoc-Infrastruktur als auch für das Repository-System Fedora."

    Abstract
    The article employs deep log analysis (DLA) techniques, a more sophisticated form of transaction log analysis, to demonstrate what usage data can disclose about information seeking behaviour of virtual scholars - academics, and researchers. DLA works with the raw server log data, not the processed, pre-defined and selective data provided by journal publishers. It can generate types of analysis that are not generally available via proprietary web logging software because the software filters out relevant data and makes unhelpful assumptions about the meaning of the data. DLA also enables usage data to be associated with search/navigational and/or user demographic data, hence the name 'deep'. In this connection the usage of two digital journal libraries, those of EmeraldInsight, and Blackwell Synergy are investigated. The information seeking behaviour of nearly three million users is analyzed in respect to the extent to which they penetrate the site, the number of visits made, as well as the type of items and content they view. The users are broken down by occupation, place of work, type of subscriber ("Big Deal", non-subscriber, etc.), geographical location, type of university (old and new), referrer link used, and number of items viewed in a session.

    Abstract
    Prozesse automatisieren, Kosten senken und die Zeit bis zur Publikation reduzieren. Das waren bislang Hauptgründe, warum Wissenschaftsverlage den Einsatz elektronischer Manuskriptverwaltungssysteme wie Editorial Manager von Aries in Erwägung ziehen. Nachdem mittlerweile neben Print- auch Internetprodukte zum Geschäftsalltag der Verlage gehören, müssen heute zusätzlich auch parallele Workflows für Off- und Online-Produkte unterstützt werden. Auch das leistet das System. Auch Wissenschaftsverlage sind den Kräften des Marktes ausgesetzt und müssen auf höchstmögliche Effizienz achten. In einer internationalen Verlagslandschaft, die durch Wettbewerbsdruck, Konzentration und technische Evolution im Zeichen des Internets geprägt ist, versprechen sinkende Produktionskosten, rasche Durchlaufzeiten bis zur Veröffentlichung und zudem eine hohe Akzeptanz bei Autoren, Gutachtern und Herausgebern signifikante Wettbewerbsvorteile. Um diese Ziele zu erreichen, bedienen sich internationale Fachverlage wie Elsevier oder Lippincott Williams & Wilkins der Editorial Manager-Lösung der Aries Systems Corporation. Seit gut einem Jahr ist auch der Berliner Fachverlag Walter de Gruyter Anwender dieser Lösung. Vor wenigen Wochen hat sich mit Springer SBM ein weiteres Schwergewicht der internationalen Verlagsbranche für die weitreichende Nutzung des Aries-Systems entschieden. Bis Ende 2006 wollen die Verantwortlichen bei Springer gleich mehrere hundert Zeitschriften auf eine Arbeitsweise mit Editorial Manager umstellen, was die weltweite Zahl der wissenschaftlichen Zeitschriften, die mit der Aries-Software arbeiten, auf dann knapp 1.500 erhöhen dürfte. Gleichwohl ist Editorial Manager nicht nur für große, internationale Verlage die geeignete Lösung. Auch kleinen und mittelständischen Verlagshäusern empfiehlt sich die Software als passgenaues Werkzeug für ihr jeweiliges Arbeitsumfeld. Diesen winken die generellen Vorteile wie Zeitersparnis bei der Manuskripteinreichung, Kostenersparnis und die automatische Metadatenverwaltung über den kompletten Workflow. 2Viele Arbeitsschritte, die vorher mehrfach händisch erledigt werden müssen, fallen beim Einsatz des Aries-Systems nur einmal an, ganz zu schweigen von der mächtigen Archivfunktionalität, die den Nutzern zugutekommt", weiß Roswitha Nottebaum, Niederlassungsleiterin der Aries GmbH & Co. KG in Langenfeld. Zudem sei das HostingModell, über das Aries die Lösung anbietet, gerade für kleinere Verlage besonders attraktiv, müssten diese dabei doch weder in Hardware noch in Wartungspersonal investieren.

    Abstract
    The papers presented at the 2002 Tri-Society Symposium an Chemical Information highlight questions we should consider as we develop new paradigms for information storage and retrieval systems. These new knowledge management systems will require novel approaches for data discovery, collection development, and the changing role of the librarian. This introductory essay discusses new and challenging integrated tools for data manipulation, the confusing and embryonic differential pricing and package deals for journal materials, and the changing role of the librarian in this rapidly transforming industry.

    Abstract
    An argument for extending the circulation of knowledge with new publishing technologies considers scholarly, economic, philosophical, and practical issues. Questions about access to scholarship go back farther than recent debates over subscription prices, rights, and electronic archives suggest. The great libraries of the past - from the fabled collection at Alexandria to the early public libraries of nineteenth-century America - stood as arguments for increasing access. In The Access Principle, John Willinsky describes the latest chapter in this ongoing story - online open access publishing by scholarly journals - and makes a case for open access as a public good. A commitment to scholarly work, writes Willinsky, carries with it a responsibility to circulate that work as widely as possible: this is the access principle. In the digital age, that responsibility includes exploring new publishing technologies and economic models to improve access to scholarly work. Wide circulation adds value to published work; it is a significant aspect of its claim to be knowledge. The right to know and the right to be known are inextricably mixed. Open access, argues Willinsky, can benefit both a researcher-author working the best-equipped lab at a leading research university and a teacher struggling to find resources in an impoverished high school. Willinsky describes different types of access - the New England Journal of Medicine, for example, grants open access to issues six months after initial publication, and First Monday forgoes a print edition and makes its contents immediately accessible at no cost. He discusses the contradictions of copyright law, the reading of research, and the economic viability of open access. He also considers broader themes of public access to knowledge, human rights issues, lessons from publishing history, and "epistemological vanities." The debate over open access, writes Willinsky, raises crucial questions about the place of scholarly work in a larger world - and about the future of knowledge.

Arms) provides a compelling and convincing argument in favor of open access. At the core of this work is Willinsky's "access principle." a commitment that "research carries with it a responsibility to extend circulation of such work as far as possible and ideally to all who are interested in it and all who might profit from it" (p.xii). It is apparent throughout the hook that the author deeply believes in the principles behind open access. and his passion and conviction come through in the work. making the hook a thought-provoking and very interesting read. While he offers numerous examples to illustrate his points throughout the work. he does not. however. offer solutions or state that he has all the answers. In that, he succeeds in his goal to craft a hook that "informs and inspires. As a result, The Access Principle is an important read for information professionals, researchers, and academics of all kinds, whether or not the reader agrees with Willinsky."

    Abstract
    Purpose - This paper seeks to understand how users determine credibility in the internet environment from a conceptual level and the implications of these new methods of credibility determination on internet tools (primarily software) and services. Design/methodology/approach - The author first examines the underlying reasons for increased dependence on the internet for information, using electronic commerce as a starting point. The central concept of "information self-sufficiency" is introduced and then examined through the lens of the internet and conversation theory. Findings - The author finds that users are shifting from more traditional "authority" methods of credibility determination, where users cede determinations to trusted third parties, to a "reliability" approach where users seek commonalities and coherence among multiple information sources. This has led to an increased pressure for participation and openness at all levels of the internet. Research limitations/implications - Studies on users and credibility must better account for often invisible technical factors. Practical implications - Libraries must take into account a greater need for participation and technical fluency when dealing with patrons, particularly in information literacy programs and instruction. Originality/value - This paper presents a large-scale conceptual approach to credibility on the internet. It seeks to inform current approaches to the subject nested in communications and instruction with the unique technical environment of the internet.

    Abstract
    Purpose - The purpose of this article is to report on a large-scale survey that was carried out to assess academic users' awareness, perceptions and existing levels of use of e-books. The survey also seeks to find out about the purposes to which electronic books were put, and to obtain an understanding of the most effective library marketing and communication channels. Design/methodology/approach - An e-mail invitation to participate in the survey was distributed to all UCL staff and students (approximately 27,000) in November 2006, and 1,818 completions were received, an effective response rate of at least 6.7 per cent. Statistical analyses were carried out on the data using Software Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Findings - The survey findings point to various ways in which user uptake and acceptance of e-books may be encouraged. Book discovery behaviour, a key issue for publishers and librarians in both print and electronic environments, emerges as a critical focus for service delivery and enhancement. Originality/value - The survey is part of an action research project, CIBER's SuperBook, that will further investigate the issues raised in this initial benchmarking survey using deep log analysis and qualitative methods. The paper partly fills the gap in the literature on e-books which has mainly focused on usage and not the users.

    Abstract
    To arrive at relevant and reliable conclusions concerning the usability of a hypermedia educational e-book, developers have to apply a well-defined evaluation procedure as well as a set of clear, concrete and measurable quality criteria. Evaluating an educational tool involves not only testing the user interface but also the didactic method, the instructional materials and the interaction mechanisms to prove whether or not they help users reach their goals for learning. This article presents a number of evaluation criteria for hypermedia educational e-books and describes how they are embedded into an evaluation procedure. This work is chiefly aimed at helping education developers evaluate their systems, as well as to provide them with guidance for addressing educational requirements during the design process. In recent years, more and more educational e-books are being created, whether by academics trying to keep pace with the advanced requirements of the virtual university or by publishers seeking to meet the increasing demand for educational resources that can be accessed anywhere and anytime, and that include multimedia information, hypertext links and powerful search and annotating mechanisms. To develop a useful educational e-book many things have to be considered, such as the reading patterns of users, accessibility for different types of users and computer platforms, copyright and legal issues, development of new business models and so on. Addressing usability is very important since e-books are interactive systems and, consequently, have to be designed with the needs of their users in mind. Evaluating usability involves analyzing whether systems are effective, efficient and secure for use; easy to learn and remember; and have a good utility. Any interactive system, as e-books are, has to be assessed to determine if it is really usable as well as useful. Such an evaluation is not only concerned with assessing the user interface but is also aimed at analyzing whether the system can be used in an efficient way to meet the needs of its users - who in the case of educational e-books are learners and teachers. Evaluation provides the opportunity to gather valuable information about design decisions. However, to be successful the evaluation has to be carefully planned and prepared so developers collect appropriate and reliable data from which to draw relevant conclusions.

    Abstract
    Sponsored by the German Ministry of Education and Research with funding of 800.000 EURO, the German Network of Expertise in long-term storage of digital resources (nestor) began in June 2003 as a cooperative effort of 6 partners representing different players within the field of long-term preservation. The partners include: * The German National Library (Die Deutsche Bibliothek) as the lead institution for the project * The State and University Library of Lower Saxony Göttingen (Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen) * The Computer and Media Service and the University Library of Humboldt-University Berlin (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin) * The Bavarian State Library in Munich (Bayerische Staatsbibliothek) * The Institute for Museum Information in Berlin (Institut für Museumskunde) * General Directorate of the Bavarian State Archives (GDAB) As in other countries, long-term preservation of digital resources has become an important issue in Germany in recent years. Nevertheless, coming to agreement with institutions throughout the country to cooperate on tasks for a long-term preservation effort has taken a great deal of effort. Although there had been considerable attention paid to the preservation of physical media like CD-ROMS, technologies available for the long-term preservation of digital publications like e-books, digital dissertations, websites, etc., are still lacking. Considering the importance of the task within the federal structure of Germany, with the responsibility of each federal state for its science and culture activities, it is obvious that the approach to a successful solution of these issues in Germany must be a cooperative approach. Since 2000, there have been discussions about strategies and techniques for long-term archiving of digital information, particularly within the distributed structure of Germany's library and archival institutions. A key part of all the previous activities was focusing on using existing standards and analyzing the context in which those standards would be applied. One such activity, the Digital Library Forum Planning Project, was done on behalf of the German Ministry of Education and Research in 2002, where the vision of a digital library in 2010 that can meet the changing and increasing needs of users was developed and described in detail, including the infrastructure required and how the digital library would work technically, what it would contain and how it would be organized. The outcome was a strategic plan for certain selected specialist areas, where, amongst other topics, a future call for action for long-term preservation was defined, described and explained against the background of practical experience.
    As follow up, in 2002 the nestor long-term archiving working group provided an initial spark towards planning and organising coordinated activities concerning the long-term preservation and long-term availability of digital documents in Germany. This resulted in a workshop, held 29 - 30 October 2002, where major tasks were discussed. Influenced by the demands and progress of the nestor network, the participants reached agreement to start work on application-oriented projects and to address the following topics: * Overlapping problems o Collection and preservation of digital objects (selection criteria, preservation policy) o Definition of criteria for trusted repositories o Creation of models of cooperation, etc. * Digital objects production process o Analysis of potential conflicts between production and long-term preservation o Documentation of existing document models and recommendations for standards models to be used for long-term preservation o Identification systems for digital objects, etc. * Transfer of digital objects o Object data and metadata o Transfer protocols and interoperability o Handling of different document types, e.g. dynamic publications, etc. * Long-term preservation of digital objects o Design and prototype implementation of depot systems for digital objects (OAIS was chosen to be the best functional model.) o Authenticity o Functional requirements on user interfaces of an depot system o Identification systems for digital objects, etc. At the end of the workshop, participants decided to establish a permanent distributed infrastructure for long-term preservation and long-term accessibility of digital resources in Germany comparable, e.g., to the Digital Preservation Coalition in the UK. The initial phase, nestor, is now being set up by the above-mentioned 3-year funding project.

    Abstract
    Increased reliance on electronic resources requires examination of the roles of librarians in several key ways. This paper addresses the need for further research into three important areas of electronic publishing. How is the change to digital information sources affecting the scholarly work of college and university students? Previous research shows that students rely on Web and online resources and ask for less help from librarians. We do not know, however, how these changes will affect the learning and scholarly work of college and university students. Research is also needed to determine how the differences between separate article and full journal databases affect the way research is done. What are the implications for scholarship of decisions being made about what publishers publish and what librarians purchase? Finally, are librarians--as intermediaries to the search process--still necessary in a digital age? Online systems are designed to be used independently but that may not always yield the best results.

    Discusses the factors, especially developments in information and communication technologies (ICTs) that influence the access and use of information by a person - as student at various levels. researcher, on the job, and for general purpose. Concludes that- books and libraries will continue to be with us and are in no danger of being replaced by the products and services that are ITC-based. There will be changes in the nature and size of library holdings and library services. Books of recreation and books of inspiration will continue to appear in the conventional form. Acquisition of books of information will he confined to the essentially required for continuous reading. For the other books and journals in each field, full text databases accessed online will have to be depended on. Reference hooks and costly books and journals required can he acquired in CD-ROM at a fraction of the cost of the printed versions. So the future library will be a combination of the conventional books and IT products in varying degrees or a hybrid library, depending on the types of library. The Impact of ICTs will be highest on research libraries.

    Abstract
    Purpose - This article aims to report on research conducted inside British national media organisations. The research was designed to investigate the impact on the working practices of journalists of the process of production convergence - the trend towards news reporting in more than one medium in formerly single-medium organisations. The article describes the changes that are taking place and the ways journalists are reacting to them. Design/methodology/approach - Interviews were conducted with 20 journalists during 2002 and 2003. The interviews were with journalists working in newsrooms at the BBC, Sky News, The Guardian and the Financial Times. Findings - The data show that while multimedia news is becoming well established, the multimedia journalist has been slow to arrive. This is because of the pressures that multi-media working adds to the journalist's daily routine and a concern over the impact on the quality of output. Research limitations/implications - The media environment is evolving rapidly and research findings on this topic quickly go out of date, but the findings presented here offer valuable insights into the news production processes operating in British national media organisations and the ways journalists are adapting to, and are likely to continue to adapt to, changes in production technologies and changed systems of working. Originality/value - The paper is the first to focus on journalistic practice in a converging media environment.

    Abstract
    This article focuses on the process of scientific and scholarly communication. Data on open access publications on the Internet not only provides a supplement to the traditional citation indexes but also enables analysis of the microprocesses and daily practices that constitute scientific communication. This article focuses on a stage in the life cycle of scientific and scholarly information that precedes the publication of formal research articles in the scientific and scholarly literature. Binomial logistic regression models are used to analyse precise mechanisms at work in the transformation of a working paper (WP) into a journal article (JA) in the field of economics. The study unveils a fine-grained process of adapting WPs to their new context as JAs by deleting and adding literature references, which perhaps can be best captured by the term sculpting.

    Abstract
    A review of recent developments in electronic publishing, with a focus on Open Access (OA) is provided. It describes the two main types of OA, i.e. the `gold' OA journal route and the 'green' repository route, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of the two, and the reactions of the publishing industry to these developments. Quality, cost and copyright issues are explored, as well as some of the business models of OA. It is noted that whilst so far there is no evidence that a shift to OA will lead to libraries cancelling subscriptions to toll-access journals, this may happen in the future, and that despite the apparently compelling reasons for authors to move to OA, so far few have shown themselves willing to do so. Conclusions about the future of scholarly publications are drawn.

    Abstract
    CrossRef, the only full-blown application of the Digital Object Identifier (DOI®) System to date, is now a little over a year old. What started as a cooperative effort among publishers and technologists to prototype DOI-based linking of citations in e-journals evolved into an independent, non-profit enterprise in early 2000. We have made considerable headway during our first year, but there is still much to be done. When CrossRef went live with its collaborative linking service last June, it had enabled reference links in roughly 1,100 journals from a member base of 33 publishers, using a functional prototype system. The DOI-X prototype was described in an article published in D-Lib Magazine in February of 2000. On the occasion of CrossRef's first birthday as a live service, this article provides a non-technical overview of our progress to date and the major hurdles ahead. The electronic medium enriches the research literature arena for all players -- researchers, librarians, and publishers -- in numerous ways. Information has been made easier to discover, to share, and to sell. To take a simple example, the aggregation of book metadata by electronic booksellers was a huge boon to scholars seeking out obscure backlist titles, or discovering books they would never otherwise have known to exist. It was equally a boon for the publishers of those books, who saw an unprecedented surge in sales of backlist titles with the advent of centralized electronic bookselling. In the serials sphere, even in spite of price increases and the turmoil surrounding site licenses for some prime electronic content, libraries overall are now able to offer more content to more of their patrons. Yet undoubtedly, the key enrichment for academics and others navigating a scholarly corpus is linking, and in particular the linking that takes the reader out of one document and into another in the matter of a click or two. Since references are how authors make explicit the links between their work and precedent scholarship, what could be more fundamental to the reader than making those links immediately actionable? That said, automated linking is only really useful from a research perspective if it works across publications and across publishers. Not only do academics think about their own writings and those of their colleagues in terms of "author, title, rough date" -- the name of the journal itself is usually not high on the list of crucial identifying features -- but they are oblivious as to the identity of the publishers of all but their very favorite books and journals.
    Citation linking is thus also a huge benefit to journal publishers, because, as with electronic bookselling, it drives readers to their content in yet another way. In step with what was largely a subscription-based economy for journal sales, an "article economy" appears to be emerging. Journal publishers sell an increasing amount of their content on an article basis, whether through document delivery services, aggregators, or their own pay-per-view systems. At the same time, most research-oriented access to digitized material is still mediated by libraries. Resource discovery services must be able to authenticate subscribed or licensed users somewhere in the process, and ensure that a given user is accessing as a default the version of an article that their library may have already paid for. The well-known "appropriate copy" issue is addressed below. Another benefit to publishers from including outgoing citation links is simply the value they can add to their own journals. Publishers carry out the bulk of the technological prototyping and development that has produced electronic journals and the enhanced functionality readers have come to expect. There is clearly competition among them to provide readers with the latest features. That a number of publishers would agree to collaborate in the establishment of an infrastructure for reference linking was thus by no means predictable. CrossRef was incorporated in January of 2000 as a collaborative venture among 12 of the world's top scientific and scholarly publishers, both commercial and not-for-profit, to enable cross-publisher reference linking throughout the digital journal literature. The founding members were Academic Press, a Harcourt Company; the American Association for the Advancement of Science (the publisher of Science); American Institute of Physics (AIP); Association for Computing Machinery (ACM); Blackwell Science; Elsevier Science; The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. (IEEE); Kluwer Academic Publishers (a Wolters Kluwer Company); Nature; Oxford University Press; Springer-Verlag; and John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Start-up funds for CrossRef were provided as loans from eight of the original publishers.
