Online genutzte Manuskriptverwaltungslösungen wie Editorial Manager von Aries sind Teil dieser Content-Management-Strategien. Zunehmend gibt es in diesem Verlagssegment auch Bestrebungen, die Internet-basierte Softwareunterstützung über den nachgelagerten Herstellungs- und Verwertungsprozess auszudehnen.

    Abstract
    Ein Grundproblem der rechnergestützten Erstellung, Bearbeitung und Archivierung von Dokumenten ist die unzureichende Wiedergabe von Inhalt und Struktur durch die heute verbreiteten Dokumentformate und Seitenbeschreibungssprachen. Die Standard Generalized Markup Language löst dieses Problem druch die präzise und flexible Beschreibung der Struktur von Dokumenten. SGML ermöglicht dadurch die vielseitige Nutzung der in Dokumenten enthaltenen Information für elektronische Publikationen, Hypertext-Systeme, Online-Dokumente, aber auch für die klassischen Formen der Publikation in Buch, Zeitschrift und Loseblattwerk. Darüber hinaus dient der ISO-Standard SGML als Austauschformat in heterogenen DV-Umgebungen. Das Buch vermittelt sowohl die für die Entscheidungsträger notwendigen Informationen als auch das Basiswissen für den Entwickler. Es gibt einen praxisorientierten Einstieg in Vorteile und Anwendungsgebiete von SGML, behandelt anhand vieler Beispiele die verschiedenen Bestandteile von Dokument-Typ-Definitionen und gibt einen Überblick über die verfügbare SGML-Software.     Abstract
    Although existing document imaging software effectively serves small business needs whenit comes to publishing documents from multiple sources in various formats on CD-ROM and the WWW, the same cannot be said when it comes to large scale corporate publishing. Sets out the requirements of corporate in house document publishing, which typically include: avoiding hand crafting documents for different media, having the flexibility not to be hostage to changing word processors, vendor alliances, operating systems, or output media; reducing exception handling as volumes of published documents increase; and incorporating support for upcoming changes in HTML, if WWW publishing is planned.     Abstract
    Was bezahlt die ETH Bibliothek an Elsevier, Springer und Wiley? Die Antwort auf diese einfache Frage liegt nun nach gut 14 Monaten und einem Entscheid der ersten Rekursinstanz (EDÖB) vor. Werfen wir nun also einen Blick in diese nun erstmals öffentlich zugänglichen Daten (auch als XLSX). Die ETH-Bibliothek schlüsselte die Ausgaben wie von mir gewünscht in Datenbanken, E-Books und Zeitschriften auf.

    Sie sind etwas größer als Organizer und Digitale Assistenten, Texte und Inhalte aller Art lassen sich via Internet auf die »elektronischen Bücher« laden. Trotz eines beachtlichen Angebots an Software, sprich: digitalisierter Literatur, ist dem E-Book der große Durchbruch bislang versagt geblieben. So lange wollte man in Duisburg sowieso nicht warten: In der Stadtbibliothek können E-Books bereits ausgeliehen werden.

    Abstract
    Institutionelle Repositorien (IR) wurden vornehmlich entwickelt, um die Sichtbarkeit des Forschungsoutputs einer Institution darzustellen. Resultate empirischer Arbeiten über die Akzeptanz und Nutzung institutioneller Repositorien in den vergangenen Jahren zeichnen jedoch ein eher kritisches Bild dieses scheinbaren Erfolgsmodells. Denn obwohl von Universitätsbibliotheken und Forschungseinrichtungen Geld und Personal in ihren Aufbau und Betrieb investiert wurde, konnten institutionellen Repositorien die Erwartungshaltungen nicht immer erfüllen. Haben sich die Proponenten bei der Umsetzung der Ziele ungeeigneter Strategien bedient, gab es technologische Veränderungen und wurden IR durch andere Formen und Techniken der Wissenschaftskommunikation bereits still und leise abgelöst? Im Versuch diese und ähnliche Fragestellungen in einer essayistisch kritischen Form zu beantworten, sollen Faktoren, die den heutigen Status quo von IR mitbestimmt haben, beleuchtet werden. An Beispielen aus dem Markt für Wissenschaftskommunikation einerseits und verschiedenen Charakteristika des Forschungsprozesses andererseits, wird versucht, Entwicklungen zu skizzieren und Wirkungszusammenhänge abzuleiten, die das Modell der institutionellen Repositorien beeinflusst haben.

    Abstract
    Institutionelle Repositorien sind ein wesentliches Instrument, um Open Access sowohl auf dem grünen als auch auf dem goldenen Weg in die Praxis umzusetzen. Der vorliegende Artikel gibt einen Überblick über die derzeit in Deutschland eingesetzten Softwaresysteme, mit denen Institutionelle Repositorien technisch umgesetzt werden können und beleuchtet diese Lösungen unter den Anforderungen des DINI-Zertifikats für Dokumenten- und Publikationsservices 2007.     Abstract
    Das Web selbst ist international, und daher kann eine umfassende Webarchivierung nur in internationaler Zusammenarbeit gelingen. Eine breite Webarchivierung erfolgt vor allem durch die US-amerikanische Organisation Internet Archive und durch Nationalbibliotheken auf nationaler Ebene. Der Artikel stellt einige dieser Webarchive vor. Eine übergreifende Zusammenarbeit sowohl auf technischer als auch organisatorischer Ebene findet im International Internet Preservation Consortium (IIPC) statt. In Arbeitsgruppen und bei Kongressen arbeiten im IIPC Webarchive an Software-Werkzeugen und der Organisation übergreifender Sammlungen. Auch im Bereich der Standardisierung gibt es eine internationale Zusammenarbeit bei der Etablierung einheitlicher Archivformate und gemeinsamer Indikatoren für Statistiken in Webarchiven.

    Abstract
    Am 23. Mai 2023 formulierte der Rat der Europäischen Union einen Rahmen für das wissenschaftliche Publizieren, der, sollte er umgesetzt werden, das Ende für akademische Verlage und wissenschaftliche Zeitschriften, wie wir sie kennen, bedeutet. Noch am selben Tag unterstützten die größten und einflussreichsten Forschungsorganisationen in Europa - darunter auch die DFG1 - dies durch eine gemeinsame Erklärung. Im Zentrum steht die Schaffung einer "öffentlichen und nicht gewinnorientierten" Infrastruktur für wissenschaftliche Veröffentlichungen.
