- Abstract
- Describes the OCLC project for cataloguing Internet resources, a project aimed at developing rules for electronic material, and as a possible solution for the difficulty of locating materials on the Internet. No attempts is made to catalogue all the resources on the Internet and choice of materials is left to participating libraries

- Abstract
- OCLC is engaged on an Internet cataloguing project. It is focusing on exploring the role of library standards, and systems, and developing InterCAT catalog (a searchable catalog that unifies bibliographic description with direct access to remote electronic resources). Discusses reasons for and against cataloguing Internet resources

- Abstract
- Reports results of a questionnaire survey of cataloguers, conducted over the AUTOCAT Internet discussion group, to determine those areas of cataloguing for which the Internet is a valuable tool and those areas for which it is not as useful. Respondents indicated 4 areas in which cataloguers use the Internet: searching the OPACs of other libraries, communicating with colleagues, accessing online cataloguing documentation and publications, and authority work. Cataloguers who found access to other libraries' OPACs did so for the following reasons: assigning call numbers and subject headings; finding full cataloguing copy from other libraries; enriching their local catalogue with notes present in records in other libraries; finding copy for foreign language items that cannot be read by library staff; and resolving difficult problems when important parts of the item are missing ar are in disarray. Some cataloguers also related processes for which they have found the Internet to not be efficient

- Abstract
- Reviews issues related to the cataloguing of Internet resources and considers short term and long term directions for cataloguing and the gereal provision of library services for remotely accessible, electronic information resources. Discusses the strengths and weaknesses of using a library catalogue model to improve access to Internet resources. Based on experience gained through 2 OCLC Internet cataloguing projects, recommends continued application of library cataloguing standard and methods for Internet resources with the expectation that catalogues, cataloguing and libraries in general will continue to evolve. Points to problems inherent in the MARC field 856

- Abstract
- Libraries can add value to Internet resources by adding them to the library's catalogue in a manner consistent with the other resources held within the collection. Reports on OCLC studies into cataloguing Internet resources and accessing electronic periodicals. Existing retrieval methods on the Internet are limited because of shallow directory structures and idiosyncratic naming conventions. Catalogue entries for electronic resources need to provide a complete description of the access methodology if they are to satisfactorily connect remote users without the immediate possibility of backup from reference staff

- Outlines the Coalition for Networked Information's (CNI) analysis of the networked electronic environment where the chief problem for the users appears to be finding resources on the Internet. - Abstract
- Internet resources have brought great excitement but also grave concerns to the library world, especially to the cataloging community. In spite of the various problematic aspects presented by Internet resources (poorly organized, lack of stability, variable quality), catalogers have decided that they are worth cataloging, in particular those meeting library selection criteria. This paper tries to trace the decade-long history of the library comrnunity's efforts in providing an effective way to catalog Internet resources. Basically, its olbjective is to answer the following questions: Why catalog? What to catalog? and, How to catalog. Some issues of cataloging electronic journals and developments of the Dublin Core Metadata system are also discussed.

- Abstract
- Evaluates OCLC's InterCAT, a WWW site which aims to catalogue the Internet. Cooperating libraries catalogue items on the Internet, and provide MARC records for them. These are available on the WWW as a searchable database. The MARC field 856 provides electronic access to the material catalogued. Discovers problems with locating resources from search results, because of the cataloguing rules used to create the records and determine the references

- Abstract
- Describes the Alcuin Project, an informal project whose goal is to discover methods for effectively cataloguing serials and Internet resources at the North Carolina State University Libraries. The project builds upon previous work including the Mr. Serials Process, DRA/World Wide Web gateway scripts, the Alex database, the Alcuin database, and the Son of SID. Each of these projects is briefly outlined and future directions are presented

- Abstract
- Recently the view has developed that electronic resources require the same level of cataloguing as the physical resources found in libraries, with the effect that a number of guidelines for cataloguing Internet resources have appeared. Describes one such standard for resource description, the Dublin Core metadata set, the ongoing refinement of the metadata elements and the application of the Dublin Core metadata set

- Abstract
- A crucial question for librarians is whether to catalogue Internet information sources, and electronic sources in general, which may contain metainformation of the texts of articles. Librarians can help researchers with data identification and access in 4 ways: making OPAC available on the Internet; providing a complete selection of Gopher, Ftp, WWW, etc. site lists; maintaining a Web site, coordinateted by the library, that functions as an Internet access point; and organising access to existing search engines that do automatic indexing. Briefly reviews several metadata formats, including USMARC field 856, IAFA templates, SOIP (Harvest), TEI Headers, Capcas Head and URC

- Abstract
- Compares and contrasts the essential differences between traditional and digital information media, reexamines the role of OPACs, refines the definition of library catalogues, and advocates the addition of Internet resources within the OPAC. Describes the building of the Alex Catalog, as part of the Alcuin Project at North Carolina State University, a catalogue of Internet resources in the format of MARC format records. Concludes with a process for integrating the further inclusion of other Internet resources into OPACs as well as some of the obstacles such a process manifests

- Abstract
- In October of 1999 there was a discussion on AUTOCAT (an e-list for cataloguers) of the advantages and disadvantages of classifying Internet resources catalogued locally, which grew to include a discussion of cataloguing electronic resources generally. This article reviews the background of applying bibliographic description techniques to electronic resources, and summarizes the AUTOCAT discussion. The exchange of opinion confirms that while some librarians see classification as primarily a method of assigning a shelf location for a physical item, many others see classification as a valid subject approach for all the materials either in the library's collection or available to the library's patrons through the library catalogue
