    Abstract
Describes the major changes that have taken place in technical services in school libraries since 1967; cataloguing principles and practices, from earlier codes to AACR2; types of materials acquired, catalogued and processed, from mainly hardback books to a variety of audiovisual materials including CD-ROMs and videodiscs; and automation, which has allowed many school libraries to take advantage of shared cataloguing and to provide more standardized bibliographic control of library materials

    Abstract
Offers advice on avaluating alternative cataloguing sources. The steps should be: identify the possible providers; network for advice; test or sample attractive systems; develop criteria based on library size, type and location (e.g. cost and equipment needs, currency of records, types of materials accessed, customer service and reputation of vendor, impact on staff/time and other library services and ability to share or network information); and evaluate the possible services; and implement the new service

    Abstract
Reviews the consequences of the traditional division of library staff into Technical Services and Reader Services and if decreased interest in cataloguing by library managers. Notes ways in which non cataloguers have had limited involvement in cataloguing. Describes different forms of a holistic approach to library practice and suggests advantages of a holistic work plan. Considers problems of a holistic work plan, advances some solutions and identifies implications for education in cataloguing in library schools

    Abstract
Describes a system of team cataloguing, based on tents taken from Total Quality Management and Employee Involvement management theories, implemented within the OCLC Cataloging Section of the Automated Services Unit at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library. The OCLC Cataloging Section employs 5 half time graduate assistants who are responsible for a substantial portion of the classification and copy editing of records for monographs. The workspace was redesigned so that the graduate assistants could increase their interactions, workflow was streamlined, line of communication were improved, training provided and a mentoring programme was implemented as a staff development initiative for the graduate assistants. The adoption of these measures has effectively eliminated a backlog of materials for which full level OCLC bibliographic records had been found

    Abstract
Discusses the management of the impact of technological change on technical services, especially cataloguing. Describes a number of library applications of recent and developing technologies, starting with the more familiar and firmly established such as OPACs and library networks then moving to less established applications such as electronic publishing and expert systems. Considers the impact these will have on the work and workflow of cataloguing including changing the mission of the library, providing alternatives to original cataloguing, changes to the number and training level of staff required, and reducing the gap between technical and public services. Argues that some of the effects of technological change are predictable and as libraries introduce changes they need to plan for the effects

    Abstract
Cataloguing departments have faced enourmous transitions during the last 20 years due to technolgical advances, changing administrative goals, and shrinking budgets. The responsibilities of professional cataloguers have greatly expanded and now include management, budgeting, and planning. Research indicates that entry-level cataloguers feel unprepared for managerial responsibilities by their graduate education. Educators and practitioners should examine the need for potential cataloguing managers and consider changing library school curricula in an effective and realistic manner to support this trend

    Abstract
Changes in cataloguing practices and philosophies, new technologies and vendor services, and enhanced efficiency and productivity produce new assignements for copy cataloguers in academic libraries. Paraprofessionals, as a result, perform cataloguing tasks previously done by librarians. They should have opportunities to expand their knowledge and skills, and benefit from challenging work assignments

    Abstract
Defends the role of quality cataloguing. It is only with adequate records that users will be able to find the information they require. It is a prerequisite for efficient machine retrieval and integrated services. Quality MARC records and the intellectual structure of cataloguing are essential is standards of service are to be maintained

    Abstract
Discusses the future of the OLUC (OCLC's union catalogue) and considers the danger that the cataloguing world in the USA might be at the beginning of a cycle of decisions leading to a superior technology that will give patrons access to a mediocre bank of information. Sees the danger to lie in new OCLC services which provide cataloguing at source, and in the tendency of some libraries to have all their cataloguing done externally, through 'outsourcing' and commercial cataloguing. The dangers of these trends, that is lower quality cataloguing and a reduction in the cataloguer's role, can be avoided by cataloguers taking on different and more active roles. Emphasizes the record management role of cataloguers and the need for their expertise in enhancing existing records, contributing at a national level to authority records, and shaping the characteristics of the OLUC
