    Abstract
Motion pictures are usually entered under the title. examines this cataloguing tradition AACR2 and earlier codes to determine its source, and to assess the extent of its compliance with, or deviation from the current cataloguing code. Discusses the authorship conditions of motion pictures in an attempt to establish criteria for choice of main entry that are consistent with general principles of cataloguing. Makes suggestions for modifying AACR2 to accomodate the main entry needs of motion pictures and other works with coparable authorship conditions

    Abstract
Reviews literature on the main expert systems used in descriptive cataloguing. Discusses the features and problems of the three types of systems which have developed: advisory systems, systems to create bibliographic records and systems to carry out original cataloguing. The quantity and complexity of the rules of a cataloguing code make it difficult for them to be incorporated into the knowledge base of an expert system

    Abstract
Bibliographic records are retrieved through the use of access points, headings for persons and corporate bodes who are responsible for the creation of the work(s) represented by the bibliographic record, or who have another relationship with the work(s). Part II of the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules. 2d ed. (AACR2) gives instructions for determining which access points should be assigned to a given bibliographic record and the form that those access points should have. This article covers the basic rules in AACR2 that are needed for determining which access points to assign to an archival or manuscript work (whether a collection or an individual item) and for determining the form of access points for personal names, geographic names, and corporate body names.

    Abstract
Today's increasing use of electronic documents raises the question: will it be necessary to change the core concepts of author and work within the tradition of Anglo-American Cataloging Rules when dealing with electronic documents? Describes the current definition of author and work as given in the traditional AACR and presents 2 systems working with electronic documents, electronic office systems and groupware

    Abstract
The major cataloguing rules, used in the USA, are discussed in terms of the ways in which they deal with periodicals cataloguing. The rules include Cutter's Rules, the American Library Association's Rules and AACR2. Looks at 2 areas: the entry of periodicals; and what is suggested if the periodical changes its title or the person or corporate body under which it is entered changes.

    Abstract
Defines the concept of creativity of cataloguing. Creativity presupposes thorough knowledge of cataloguing rules and standards. The goal of creative cataloguing is to adapt records in order to enhance user access to information in the library database. Using examples from various types of serial records, discusses creative cataloguing methods in the online environment

    Abstract
Following a brief history of cataloguing and the MARC record format, describes current challenges in developing suitable international formats and cataloguing rules for dealing with electronic resources. Extensive references to the past and current literature provide an overview of the problems faced. Notes the role of the ISBD, Z39.50 protocol and the integration of Internet objects into the online catalogue

    Abstract
Offers the conceptual modelling technique as a means of analysing the future of library cataloguing with regard to cataloguing rules and MARC formats. Discusses the evolution of publishing technology and introduces the conceptual model that the IFLA is preparing in its study of the functional requirements of bibliographic records. Considers the purpose of cataloguing rules and how they have evolved in response to changes in technologies. Examines the future of cataloguing with future rules and alternative communication formats

    Abstract
Briefly reviews the history of the development of cataloging rules for cartographic materials, both within the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (AACR) community and internationally. Discusses the differences of cataloging this material in archives compared with that in libraries. States that the cataloging of this material in archives relates to how the material was created or produced in the context of how it was used, noting that archival cataloging emphasizes methodology over the material itself. Gives a short overview of the methodologies, their development, and application. Uses diagrams and an example to illustrate the archival methodology. Concludes that cataloging records and archival description records produced by these methods may co-exist in the same database, but that current computer systems developed for library applications have generally not developed the capability to display open hierarchically structured linked multilevel descriptions such as required by the archival methodology of multilevel description.

    Abstract
Examines changes in the rules for cataloguing certein categories of printed material, anonymous works, including: those described as being 'by the author of' another named work; pseudonymous works; edited works (collections of writings of several authors); and conference proceedings. Discusses the relevant rules from the British Museum, the 1908 joint code, the Bodleian, Cambridge University Library and AACR2, Samples of London publications taken in specimen years between 1841 and 1991 show that there has been a decrease in anonymous works and in works with personal authors, offset by a sharp increase in multiple authorship, edited works and conference proceedings. Concludes that these changes have taken place in response to external forces. Some changes have been because the rules have been found to be unworkable or based on unnecessary or false distinctions which were impossible for the cataloguer to interpret

    Abstract
Cartographic materials in digital format are now a reality in modern map libraries. Libraries have been reluctant to catalogue this type of material because of the lack of cataloguing rules and the highly technical nature of the information. This paper provides a status report on cataloguing rules for electronic cartographic materials, with particular emphasis on the new fields that have been created in USMARC to accommodate the special requirements for this material. For each part of the bibliographic description, both what current cataloguing rules allow and what is being recommended as part of the revision to Cartographic Materials: A Manual of Interpretation for AACR2 is presented. The paper also looks at what is required to get started and identifies resource tools.
