    Abstract
Describes a project based at the ESRC Data Archive, Esses University to examine standards for cataloguing computer files and the feasibility of creating a union catalogue of computer files. A pilot scheme was set up to enable the MARC record output of the ESRC Data Archive to be merged with the software records of the NISS (National Information on Software and Services) data base, which is available on the JANET network.

    Abstract
Describes the components and uses of computerized library information systems. Examines the rules stipulated by S.R. Ranganathan in his Classified Catalogue Code (ed.5) (CCC5) for the construction of catalogues and preparation of bibliographies from the point of view of their relevance and suitability for creating bibliographic databases. Compares rules of CCC5 with those of AACR2 and suggests modification of existing rules as well as incorporation of new rules. Concludes that in developing online catalogues or online bibliographic databases, it is neither essential nor desirable to follow strictly the rules of specific traditional catalogue codes such as AACR2 or CCC5. Describes a design for a prototype integrated database for a library system with the aid of CDS/ISIS software

    Abstract
Describes the challenges encountered in the cataloguing of electronic media in the light of proposed changes to legal deposit. These included: how to install and de-install the software and application of the 20 per cent rule of LCSH. The British Library is now prepared for the possibility of extended legal deposit for electronic media

    Abstract
The significant differences that exist between the print and digital worlds are sometimes felt to diminish the need for bibliographic description in the electronic world. An analysis of these differences, especially with respect to (1) the control of production and distribution of documents and (2) the need for software intermediation, coupled with a discussion of the functions of bibliographic description in the task of document retrieval argue, however, for an increased role for bibliographic description in the electronic world

    Abstract
Provides a brief history of cataloguing in Turkey from the Ottoman Empire until 1961. Discusses the current automation of bibliographic control and AACR2 cataloguing. While most of the libraries in major cities use computers for cataloguing, some are still at the feasibility study stage. The National Library started using AACR2 in 1985. Towards the end of the 1980s mainframe computer and software were acquired, and retrospective cataloguing has continued since 1990. Discusses the Directorate General of Libraries centralized cataloguing project for public libraries; problems with the Turkish alphabet; the creation of authority files; the creation of a national MARC format; and the use of expert systems

    Abstract
A review of the literature. Authority control is intended to improve precision and recall but high failure rates detected during online catalogue searches by end users has given rise to debate about whether the time and effort involved in this approach is justified. Suggested solutions include using a combination of indexing techniques, increasing access points, greater standardisation of formats and more powerful software. Cooperative programmes at national and international levels can reduce costs. In Latin America some libraries use US / European formats, while others have developed their own local or regional systems; the whole situation needs to be reviewed to resolve the anomalies

    Abstract
Discusses ways of applying MARC Field 856 (Electronic Location and Access) to authority records in online union catalogues. In principle, each catalogue site location can be treated as the electronic record of the work concerned and the MARC Field 856 can then refer to this location as if it were referring to the location of a primary record. Although URLs may become outdated, the fact that they are located in specifically defined MARC Fields makes the data contained amenable to the same link maintenance software ae used for the electronic records themselves. Includes practical examples of typical union catalogue records incorporating MARC Field 856

    Abstract
Computer technology is currently undergoing rapid development. The cataloger's workstation will act as an important structuring concept in our implementation of this technology in cataloging departments. As this combination of more powerful computer hardware and software is introduced into cataloging production, a new phase in the transformation of cataloging to a fully electronic environment will take hold. Though they existed prior to the introduction of electronic catalogs, the principles of connectivity and coordination will come to play primary roles in the use of the cataloger's workstation.
