    Abstract
The Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, second edition, aim at universal applicability. Some problems brought forth through the translation process and the laws in the workability of rules in a nonEnglish working language are examined. This leads to acknowledge the failure of AACR2 to acquire an international adaptability. Enquiry into the needs of potential users is advised.

    Abstract
Examines the achievements in bibliographic control of the last thirty years and the strides made toward Universal Bibliographic Control. Discusses the intended and unintended effects of three standards-the MARC format, ISBD, and AACR. Analyzes the types of resources in cyberspace to be organized and their similarities to and differences from documents librarians already know. Suggests strategies for solving the seemingly insoluble problems of cataloging the Internet and predicts how metadata will evolve.

    Abstract
Electronic documents are creating new services and generating new demands, with consequent impacts on the means of transmitting knowledge, international standards and democratisation of access. Universal bibliographic control depends on common rules for bibliographic description and format to ensure compatibility and exchange. In addition to ISBN and UNIMARC for cataloguing, Z39.50 allows searching of heterogeneous databases and SGML makes cataloguing in publication a reality. Such developments must be based on knowledge of what users want and their real search and consultation practices, not what the system devisers have the technology to create

    Abstract
Many English-speaking and non-English-speaking countries have adopted the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, 2nd Edition after both its 1978 publication and its 1988 revision. Indeed, it has been translated into fourteen languages. This study examines some of the reasons why AACR has been internationally adopted and some of the problems encountered by various countries attempting to adapt it to a non-Anglo-American environment or translate it for a non-English-speaking environment. We examine whether AACR can be revised into a universal code or whether it must coexist with one or more other codes. We then examine the experiences of various countries that have adopted AACR2.

    Abstract
Authority control is necessary for meeting the catalog's objectives of enabling users to find the works of an author and to collocate all works of a person or corporate body. This article looks at the current state of authority control as compared to the visions of the 1979 LITA (Library Information and Technology Association) Institutes and the 1984 Authority Control Interest Group. It explores a new view of IFLA's Universal Bibliographic Control (UBC) and a future vision of a virtual international authority file as a building block for the Semantic Web and reinforces the importance of authority control to improve the precision of searches of large databases or the Internet.

    Abstract
This summary considers the final articles selected for the special issue, interweaving some common threads that bind them together in their consideration of the International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD), consolidated edition, 2011, as a bibliographic content standard. With discussions of (1) the historical and current evolution of the ISBD, (2) the concept of Universal Bibliographic Control relative to an emerging Semantic Web environment, (3) ISBD and national cataloging codes, and (4) the continuing challenges of "non-book" resources, as context, the article concludes by exploring the question, "Is there a future for the ISBD?"

    Abstract
The article discusses the use of International Standard for Bibliographic Description (ISBD) in linked data application profiles and mappings to other bibliographic element sets including UNIMARC (UNIversal MARC), MARC 21, and Resource Description and Access (RDA), establishing ISBD's support for hierarchical relationships between fine-grained properties for resource attributes and coarser-grained aggregations for end-user displays of data triples, and interoperability of metadata derived from different schema. Separation of ISBD punctuation from element properties allows its use in text-based displays while accommodating innovative ways of presenting record-level sets of linked data. The article concludes with a discussion of the issues facing ISBD in maintaining a role in the future library linked data environment.

    Abstract
The article is an updated and expanded version of a paper presented to International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions in 2013. It describes recent work involving the representation of International Standard for Bibliographic Description (ISBD) and UNIMARC (UNIversal MARC) in Resource Description Framework (RDF), the basis of the Semantic Web and linked data. The UNIMARC Bibliographic format is used to illustrate issues arising from the development of a bibliographic element set and its semantic alignment with ISBD. The article discusses the use of such alignments in the automated processing of linked data for interoperability, using examples from ISBD, UNIMARC, and Resource Description and Access.

    Abstract
Argues against the downgrading of cataloguing within libraries. Hightlights 2 ways in which this is occuring: the reduction or elimination of professional cataloguers and the reliance of clerical staff in their place; and outsourcing, or privatization of the library's current cataloguing. Stresses that cataloguing is at the heart of the library and that the interrelationship between reference service and catalguing needs to be recognized and strenghtened. Also addresses the issues of universal bibliographic control (based on a bedrock of good local cataloguing) and of the bibliographic control of electronic resources, which, it is argued, given the evidence of the chaos on the Internet, is in dire need of the skills of professional cataloguers

    Abstract
This is an account of the experience of the National Library of Portugal (NLP) in the adaptation of cataloging rules and the development of the local practice in old manuscript cataloging. The evolution of the work upon which current policies and practice are based is presented. Also, the process and results of adapting UNIMARC (UNIversal MARC) to manuscripts is explained, showing how the whole practice of automated cataloging of manuscripts at the NLP has been an innovative and pioneering experience.
