    Abstract
    In diesem Buch werden die neuesten kenntnisse über die biologischen, evolutionsbiologischen und neurobiologischen Grundlagen von Wahrnehmung und Erkenntnisleistungen, von Bewußtsein und Geist dargestellt. Es wird diskutiert, wie und innerhalb welcher Grenzen mit den heutigen neurophysiologischen und bildgebenden Verfahren Bewußtsein und Geist 'sichtbar' gemacht werden können. Auf diesen Grundlagen aufbauend, wird im Sinne des Konstruktivismus ein philosophisch-erkenntnistheoretisches Konzept des menschlichen Erlenntnisvermögens entwickelt, das zugleich einen nichtreduktionistischen Physikalismus vertritt. Dieser nimmt im Gegensatz zu einem Dualismus die Einheitlichkeit der Natur auch für die Gehirn-Geist-Beziehung an, ohne zugleich Geist auf die Aktivität von Nervenzellen reduzieren zu wollen. Insbesondere wird auf die Frage nach der Herkunft und Natur unserer Erlebniswelt - der 'Wirklichkeit' - eingegangen sowie auf die Frage nach ihrer Beziehung zu einer bewußtseinsunabhängigen 'Realität'. Die Beantwortung dieser Frage hat weitreichende Konsequenzen für den erkenntnistheoretischen Status (natur)wissenschaftlicher Aussagen. Ein Anspruch auf 'Wahrheit' im Sinne objektiv gültiger Aussagen muß verneint werden - im Wissenschaftsalltag wird ein solcher Anspruch auch gar nicht erhoben.

    Abstract
    Der amerikanische Medizin-Nobelpreisträger ist im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Hirnforschern davon überzeugt, daß die Biologie den Schlüssel zum Verständnis des Gehirns und damit des menschlichen Geistes liefert. Seine These vertritt er in der vorliegenden Veröffentlichung. Sie "ist von einer erstaunlichen Vielfalt, die von der Philosophie zur Biologie, zur Psychologie und zur Computersimulation des Nervensystems reicht und daraus ein Ganzes zu machen versucht".     Abstract
    Seit Hippokrates gibt es zwischen der empirisch-medizinischen Hirnforschung und den philosophischen Erkenntnis- und Bewußtseinstheorien enge Beziehungen und Wechselwirkungen. In diesem Band werden nach einer historischen Einleitung vom gegenwärtigen Stand der Hirnforschung die Gehirnleistungen auf Grund des strukturell-funktionellen Aufbaus des Zentralnervensystems mit Berücksichtigung der Großhirnrinde und Hemisphärenspezialisation dargelegt. Es folgt eine Skizzierung der Gehirnevolution und eine Erörterung der funktionellen Bedeutung der Lebensstadien des Gehirns und eine Darstellung der höheren Hirnfunktionen, die für die menschlichen Bewußtseinsleistungen grundlegend sind. An den neurobiologischen Teil schließt sich ein erkenntnistheoretischer Teil an, der die Erkenntnisfähigkeit des Menschen auf die höheren Hirnfunktionen zurückführt und deshalb in Analogie zur Neuropsychologie und Neurolinguistik als Neuroepistemologie bezeichnet wird. Gegenüber den klassischen Versuchen, die Erkenntnistheorie auf der Sinnespsychologie aufzubauen, führt der Weg, die kognitiven Leistungen auf die Funktionen des zentralen Verarbeitungssystems zu gründen, zu überraschenden Konsequenzen, welche der Erkenntnistheorie Kants viel näher stehen als dem sensualistischen Empirismus

    Abstract
    Das Phänomen des menschlichen Bewußtseins wird in ein übergreifendes Gefüge physikalischer wie informationstheoretischer Zusammenhänge eingeordnet. Der dänische Wissenschaftsjournalist Tor Noerretranders macht sich Gedanken über das Bewußtsein. Ich denke, also bin ich? "Nein", meint er, "nicht ich denke, sondern es denkt in mir, und dem, was wir 'ich' nennen, wird nur das Resultat bewußt, ein winziger Bruchteil dessen, was 'es' wahrgenommen und verarbeitet hat." Aber was ist dieses "es", das Selbst, wie es der Autor nennt? In seinem Buch beschreibt er eine Reihe naturwissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse, die zeigen, daß das Bewußtsein nicht das Zentrum unserer Entscheidungen und Handlungen ist, und daß wir zum größten Teil "nichtbewußt" denken und agieren. "Wir haben", so sagt er, "die besten 'Auftritte', wenn wir unserem Selbst freien Lauf lassen, wenn wir gerade nicht versuchen, es durch das Ich zu kontrollieren."

    Abstract
    Obwohl der Informationsbegriff in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten zunehmend als Schl?sselbegriff zur Erklärung gesellschaftlicher Entwicklungen herangezogen wird, ist das breite Spektrum wissenschaftlicher Informationsbegriffe bisher kaum fachübergreifend analysiert worden. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird daher der Wandel des Informationsbegriffs in den acht Disziplinen Physik, Biologie, Kybernetik, Informatik, Ökonomie, Soziologie, Psychologie und Philosophie nachvollzogen und auf verallgemeinerbare Tendenzen hin untersucht. Ausgelöst durch die mathematische Informationstheorie von Claude Shannon erhält der Informationsbegriff in den Natur- und Geisteswissenschaften in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts eine zentrale Bedeutung. Dabei entwickeln sich in den einzelnen Wissenschaften verschiedene, zum Teil unvereinbare Vorstellungen von Information. Neben dem kulturalistischen, am menschlichen Handlungsbezug orientierten Informationsbegriff und dem naturalistischen Verständnis, das Information als in der Natur gegebenes Phänomen betrachtet, gewinnt dabei das maschinengeprägte Informationsverständnis der Kybernetik und Informatik an Bedeutung. Mit Hilfe der hermeneutischen Textbetrachtung arbeitet der Autor die Entwicklung der unterschiedlichen Informationsverständnisse heraus und bezieht sie auf den gegenwärtigen Informationsbegriff der Gesellschaft. Er kommt dabei zu dem Ergebnis, dass das technisch-statistische Verständnis von Information (nach Shannon) zwar in den meisten Disziplinen weitgehend abgelehnt wurde, aber über die Informatik und die Molekularbiologie eine dominierende Stellung in der Informationsgesellschaft der Gegenwart eingenommen hat.

    Abstract
    Diskussionen um Datennetze und Informationstechnik drehen sich häufig um kompetentes Handeln. In der Publikation werden Voraussetzungen eines autonomen informationellen Handelns gezeigt: Abstrahieren, Analogien bilden, Plausibilitäten beachten, Schlussfolgern und kreativ sein. Informationelle Kompetenz ist gelebte Informationelle Autonomie. Es lassen sich Konsequenzen für ein zukünftiges Menschenbild in informationstechnischen Umgebungen ziehen.

    Abstract
    Das menschliche Denken organisiert sich ständig in komplexen Wechselwirkungen zwischen Emotionen und Erkenntnissen. Für das Verständnis dieser Prozesse schlägt Ciompi ein Modell vor, da über die vertraute kausale Logik weit hinausführt Emotion und Kognition wirken zusammen in einem unablässigen Prozeß der Selbstschöpfung, die sich mit ihr eigener Kraft wieder und wieder selbstähnlich hervorzubringen vermag. Erstmals in der Geschichte des Denkens über das menschliche Denken stehen Philosophie, Psychologie und die jüngsten Erkenntnisse der Neurobiologie nicht mehr unvermittelt nebeneinander.     Abstract
    1990 wurde in Amerika die «Dekade des Hirns» ausgerufen. Zehn Jahre später erklärten auch in Deutschland führende Hirnforscher eine «Dekade des menschlichen Gehirns». Mit neuester Technologie wollten sie «dem Gehirn beim Arbeiten zusehen», Ursachen krankhafter Fehlfunktionen ergründen und Aufschlüsse über mentale Prozesse wie Wahrnehmung, Informationsverarbeitung und Sprache gewinnen. Revolutionäre Erkenntnisse über das Wesen höherer kognitiver Leistungen lieferten sie bis heute nicht, auch wenn manche Neurowissenschaftler dies anders sehen. Für Kultur- und Geisteswissenschaftler ist menschliches Denken und Wissen das Ergebnis kulturgeschichtlicher Entwicklung, die mit naturwissenschaftlichen Methoden nicht entschlüsselbar sei. Wie aber ist die Verbindung von Körper und Geist vorstellbar? Jede mögliche Antwort ist Vorstellung oder Gedanke und beantwortet daher die Frage nicht wirklich. Ist das gelebte Leben die Antwort?

    Abstract
    In den Arbeiten dieses Sammelbandes wird die Erkenntnistheorie des 'radikalen Konstruktivismus' anschaulich und folgerichtig entwickelt. In Untersuchungen zu Sprache und Kommunikation, zur kybernetischen Modellierung kognitiver Prozesse, zur Entwicklung des begrifflichen - besonders auch des mathematischen - Denkens von Kindern wird im einzelnen dargestellt, daß wir die Idee 'objektiver' Erkenntnis verwerfen müssen, solange wir streng empirisch und rational erkennen wollen. Alle Erkenntnis, alles Wissen stellt keine 'Entdeckung' einer unabhängig von uns existierenden Realität dar, sondern wird von uns erzeugt, 'konstruiert', und bleibt solange gültig als es uns zu (über-)leben hilft, als es 'viabel' ist. Daraus ergibt sich nicht nur eine dramatisch veränderte Sicht menschlicher Erkenntnis, menschlichen Lernens, Handelns und Zusammenlebens, sondern auch eine anspruchsvolle Ethik der individuellen (Über-)Lebensverantwortung

    Abstract
    Im Zeitalter der elektronischen Medien ist "Information" zu einem schillernden Schlagwort geworden. Sie legt die Basis für Entscheidungsprozesse und bestimmt unser Denken und Handeln. Doch was ist Information und wie funktioniert sie? Das Buch stellt das Thema erstmals aus der Sicht der Informationstheorie, der Wahrnehmung, des Denkens und der Sprache dar. Auf interdisziplinärer Ebene wird der Informationsbegriff erarbeitet. Wie erlangen Daten Sinn und Bedeutung? Das Werk behandelt die Natur der Informationsflüsse und diskutiert die Rolle des Kontextes. Zahlreiche Beispiele und Abbildungen unterstützen die Erläuterungen. Anhand des Japanischen wird der dramatische Einfluß des sprachlichen Kontextes auf die inhaltliche Interpretation verdeutlicht.     Abstract
    Charles S. Peirce (1839-1914) ist neben William James einer der Begründer des Pragmatismus und der Wegbereiter einer ebenso weitgreifenden wie radikalen Zeichentheorie. »We think only in signs«, heißt es bei ihm. Und in der Tat: Ist ein Denken denkbar, das ohne Zeichen auskäme? Ludwig Nagls Einführung macht mit den Grundbegriffen der Peirceschen Zeichentheorie bekannt und zeigt, inwiefern sein Pragmatismus, die Kategorienlehre, die Wissenschaftstheorie und die spekulative Evolutionsphilosophie auf den Begriff der Semiosis, den stetigen Prozeß der Zeichenverknüpfung, zu beziehen sind. Heute ist Peirce von aktuellem Interesse wegen seiner scharfen Opposition zum cartesianischen »Bewußtseinsparadigma«, in die ihn seine Semiotik hineintrieb, und wegen des Vermögens seiner Philosophie, spekulatives Denken zuzulassen, ohne dabei die Rolle von Logik und Experiment zu schmälern. Es ist ein Denken, das die Blockaden zu durchbrechen vermag, die die sprachanalytische Philosophie in den Köpfen errichtet hat.
