    Abstract
    Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to point out that past models of information ownership may not carry over to the age of digital information. The fact that public ownership of information (for example, by means of national and public library collections) created social benefits in the past does not mean that a greater degree of private sector involvement in information provision in the knowledge society of today is synonymous with an abandonment of past ideals of social information provision. Design/methodology/approach - A brief review of recent issues in digital preservation and national electronic heritage management, with an examination of the public-private sector characteristics of each issue. Findings - Private companies and philanthropic endeavours focussing on the business of digital information provision have done some things - which in the past we have associated with the public domain - remarkably well. It is probably fair to say that this has occurred against the pattern of expectation of the library profession. Research limitations/implications - The premise of this paper is that LIS research aimed at predicting future patterns of problem solving in information work should avoid the narrow use of patterns of public-private relationships inherited from a previous, print-based information order. Practical implications - This paper suggests practical ways in which the library and information profession can improve digital library services by looking to form creative partnerships with private sector problem solvers. Originality/value - This paper argues that the LIS profession should not take a doctrinaire approach to commercial company involvement in "our" information world. Librarians should facilitate collaboration between all parties, both public and private, to create original solutions to contemporary information provision problems. In this way we can help create pragmatic, non-doctrinaire solutions that really do work for the citizens of our contemporary information society.

    Abstract
    Anthropological inquiry suggests that all societies classify animals and plants in similar ways. Paradoxically, in the same cultures that have seen large advances in biological science, citizenry's practical knowledge of nature has dramatically diminished. Here we describe historical, cross-cultural and developmental research on how people ordinarily conceptualize organic nature (folkbiology), concentrating on cognitive consequences associated with knowledge devolution. We show that results on psychological studies of categorization and reasoning from "standard populations" fail to generalize to humanity at large. Usual populations (Euro-American college students) have impoverished experience with nature, which yields misleading results about knowledge acquisition and the ontogenetic relationship between folkbiology and folkpsychology. We also show that groups living in the same habitat can manifest strikingly distinct behaviors, cognitions and social relations relative to it. This has novel implications for environmental decision making and management, including commons problems.

    Abstract
    Purpose - Information, owing to its nature, has numerous capabilities. Through utilizing these capabilities, information systems can add to the value of information. The purpose of this paper is to explain where and how added value emerges from the work processes in library and information professions. Design/methodology/approach - The paper begins with a review of the related literature and then takes a conceptual approach to discuss different values of information and IR systems; elaborates on how each of the processes such as assessment of needs, selection, description/organization, storage/processing, search/retrieval, and dissemination generate capabilities that lead to added value. Findings - The paper identifies that added value is generated through processes such as reproduction, exchange, transfer, refinement, analysis, interpretation, synthesis, and regeneration of information. Many such processes turn information into knowledge. Research limitations/implications - This paper is based on the author's reflections on the matter of added value generated by library and information practice. Further empirical studies are needed to substantiate the extent to which such values are generated through information systems and services in the real world. Practical implications - Librarians and information specialists can find through their working practice how to design systems and services which can generate added value for information. Originality/value - In the present evolving conditions, library and information professionals are able to add to the value of information by sharing their knowledge with the expertise of computer scientists and finding a variety of ways and up-to-date methods of optimizing existing systems, as well as designing new systems. These are the two strategies along which the profession should guide its educational, research and practical endeavors.

    Abstract
    The focus of this thesis is information use. Although a key concept in information behaviour, information use has received little attention from information science researchers. Studies of other key concepts such as information need and information seeking are dominant in information behaviour research. Information use is an area of interest to information professionals who rely on research outcomes to shape their practice. There are few empirical studies of how people actually use information that might guide and refine the development of information systems, products and services.

    Abstract
    Purpose - This article aims to define and explore the nature of wisdom, managerial wisdom, organisational wisdom and wisdom management. Design/methodology/approach - The paper draws on some of the diverse writings on wisdom, and explores the relevance of wisdom in the context of knowledge management. Findings - Wisdom has received little attention in the information management and systems, knowledge management and management literature. This is surprising since in this knowledge-based economy the link between data, information and knowledge is seen as pivotal by practitioners, consultants and academics. Originality/value - The article explores the nature of organisational wisdom and identifies a number of areas for further theory-making and empirical investigation.

    ""Wir dürfen nicht passiv zuschauen, sondern müssen unser Schicksal selbst in die Hand nehmen", erklärte UN-Generalsekretär Kofi Annan am Mittwoch bei der Eröffnung des "Weltgipfels über die Informationsgesellschaft". Annan sieht einen "historischen Wandel in der Art zu leben, zu lernen, zu arbeiten, zu kommunizieren und Geschäfte abzuwickeln". Delegierte von 175 Staaten, darunter mehr als 60 Staats- oder Regierungschefs, sind zu dieser ersten Weltkonferenz über Information und Kommunikation nach Genf gekommen. Einschließlich der Bosse von Medienkonzernen und der Vertreter von Nicht-Regierungs-Organisationen nehmen rund 15 000 Personen an der Großveranstaltung teil, deren Vorbereitung fünf Jahre in Anspruch nahm. Kofi Annan bemängelte die Schwachstellen beim Aufbau einer weltumspannenden Informationsgesellschaft, die nicht nur mit der technologischen Kluft zwischen dem Norden und dem Süden zu erklären seien. Auch die Inhalte der Leistungen klafften aus-' einander. Ein großer Teil der Webseiten im Internet hätten keinerlei Bezug zu den wirklichen Bedürfnissen der Menschen. Fast 70 Prozent dieser Webseiten seien in englischer Sprache abgefasst. Damit würden lokale Stimmen und Ansichten verdrängt. - Frauen im Nachteil - Außerdem bestehe in der Informationsgesellschaft ein großer Unterschied zwischen den Geschlechtern, sagte Annan, weil Frauen und Mädchen weniger Zugang zu den modernen Technologien hätten als Männer und Jungen. Dies gelte sowohl für die Industriestaaten wie für die Entwicklungsländer. Am Eröffnungstag ergriffen neben anderen politischen Führern der ägyptische Präsident Hosni Mubarak und dessen iranischer Amtskollege Mohammad Khatami das Wort. Die beiden trafen sich anschließend zu vertraulichen Gesprächen über den Nahostkonflikt. Für Robert Mugabe, den' Präsidenten von Simbabwe, musste die Schweiz eine Sonder-Einreiserlaubnis erteilen, weil der Diktator in den meisten europäischen Ländern Aufenthaltsverbot hat. Bei der Fahrt Mugabes von seinem Hotel ins Konferenzzentrum gab es ein Handgemenge zwischen seinen Leibwächtern und Fotografen. Bundeskanzler Gerhard Schröder und Wirtschaftsminister Wolfgang Clement mussten ihre Reise nach Genf wegen der innenpolitischen Debatte in Berlin absagen. Im Namen Deutschlands will am Donnerstag Rezzo Schlauch, Parlamentarischer Staatssekretär im Wirtschaftsministerium, eine Rede halten. Unter den prominenten Politikern beim Weltgipfel sind der französische Ministerpräsident Jean-Pierre Raffarin, der nigerianische Präsident Olusegun Obasanjo und der "Maximo Lider" Kubas, Fidel Castro. Insgesamt sind die westlichen Industriestaaten auf niedrigerer Ebene vertreten als die Entwicklungsländer. Die meisten stritti- gen Fragen waren allerdings vor Eröffnung der Konferenz bereinigt oder an 'Arbeitsgruppen weitergeschoben worden. So wurde gegen den anfänglichen Widerstand Chinas die Meinungs- und Pressefreiheit bestätigt. Die chinesischen Behörden wachen genau darüber, welche Webseiten im Internet die gewöhnlichen Bürger anklicken dürfen. Verhandlungsteilnehmer erwarten nun, dass Peking seine einschränkenden Praktiken in Einklang mit der Erklärung von Genf (unser Bild zeigt die Installation "Hello World" im Genfer See) bringt. Auf die zweite Runde des Informationsgipfels im Jahr 2005 in Tunis vertagt wurde die Frage, wer das Internet "verwalten" soll. Derzeit registriert die mit einer Lizenz der US-Regierung ausgestattete kalifornische Firma "Interne Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers" (Icann) die Anmeldungen von so genannten "Domaines": Vor allem Brasilien, China, Indien und Südafrika wollen diese Kontrolle den USA entreißen und eine Agentur der Vereinten Nationen mit dem Internet-Management betrauen. Die vorgelegten Pläne sind aber derzeit noch recht vage."
