- Abstract
- Seit 1975 betreut die Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin im Rahmen des von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) geförderten Systems der Überregionalen Literaturversorgung das Sondersammelgebiet (SSG) Rechtswissenschaft. Mit über 900.000 Bänden an Monographien, Zeitschriften, Gesetzesblättern und Entscheidungssammlungen verfügt die Staatsbibliothek heute über eine der größten Sammlungen an juristischen Quellen und Sekundärliteratur in Deutschland. Aufgabe der SSG-Bibliotheken war und ist es, konventionelle fachwissenschaftliche Literatur umfassend zu erwerben, zu erschließen und für die überregionale Literaturversorgung zur Verfügung zu stellen. Seit Ende der neunziger Jahre betreibt die DFG die Weiterentwicklung des SSG-Systems zu einem Netzwerk Virtueller Fachbibliotheken (ViFa), die in der Regel an der entsprechenden SSG-Bibliothek aufgebaut werden. Innerhalb der Virtuellen Fachbibliotheken wird der ursprüngliche Sondersammelgebietsauftrag auf fachwissenschaftliche Publikationen und Informationen ausgeweitet, die in digitaler Form produziert werden, also auch auf den gesamten Bereich des Internets. Inzwischen gibt es mehr als 25 von der DFG geförderte Virtuelle Fachbibliotheken. Einige sind noch im Aufbau, andere haben den Projektstatus bereits verlassen und befinden sich im Routinebetrieb.

- Abstract
- Clearinghouses - or subject gateways - are domain-specific collections of links to resources an the Internet. The links are described with metadata and structured according to a domain-specific subject hierarchy. Users access the information by searching in the metadata or by browsing the subject hierarchy. The standards for metadata vary across existing Clearinghouses and different technologies for storing and accessing the metadata are used. This makes it difficult to distribute the editorial or administrative work involved in maintaining a clearinghouse, or to exchange information with other systems. DBClear is a generic, platform-independent clearinghouse system, whose metadata schema can be adapted to different standards. The data is stored in a relational database. It includes a workflow component to Support distributed maintenance and automation modules for link checking and metadata extraction. The presentation of the clearinghouse an the Web can be modified to allow seamless integration into existing web sites.

- Abstract
- Digital libraries have become one of the most important Web services for information seeking. One of their main drawbacks is their global approach: In general, there is just one interface for all users. One of the key elements in improving user satisfaction in digital libraries is personalization. When considering personalizing factors, cognitive styles have been proved to be one of the relevant parameters that affect information seeking. This justifies the introduction of cognitive style as one of the parameters of a Web personalized service. Nevertheless, this approach has one major drawback: Each user has to run a time-consuming test that determines his or her cognitive style. In this article, we present a study of how different classification systems can be used to automatically identify the cognitive style of a user using the set of interactions with a digital library. These classification systems can be used to automatically personalize, from a cognitive-style point of view, the interaction of the digital library and each of its users.

- Abstract
- Service-oriented architectures, and the wider acceptance of decentralized peer-to-peer architectures enable the transition from integrated, centrally controlled systems to federated and dynamic configurable systems. The benefits for the individual service providers and users are robustness of the system, independence of central authorities and flexibility in the usage of services. This chapter provides details of the European project BRICKS, which aims at enabling integrated access to distributed resources in the Cultural Heritage domain. The target audience is broad and heterogeneous and involves cultural heritage and educational institutions, the research community, industry, and the general public. The project idea is motivated by the fact that the amount of digital information and digitized content is continuously increasing but still much effort has to be expended to discover and access it. The reasons for such a situation are heterogeneous data formats, restricted access, proprietary access interfaces, etc. Typical usage scenarios are integrated queries among several knowledge resource, e.g. to discover all Italian artifacts from the Renaissance in European museums. Another example is to follow the life cycle of historic documents, whose physical copies are distributed all over Europe. A standard method for integrated access is to place all available content and metadata in a central place. Unfortunately, such a solution requires a quite powerful and costly infrastructure if the volume of data is large. Considerations of cost optimization are highly important for Cultural Heritage institutions, especially if they are funded from public money. Therefore, better usage of the existing resources, i.e. a decentralized/P2P approach promises to deliver a significantly less costly system,and does not mean sacrificing too much on the performance side.

- Abstract
- CORC is an OCLC project that id developing tools and systems to enable libraries to provide enhanced access to Internet resources. By adapting and extending library techniques and procedures, we are developing a self-supporting system capable of describing a large and useful subset of the Web. CORC is more a system for hosting and supporting subject gateways than a gateway itself and relies on large-scale cooperation among libraries to maintain a centralized database. By supporting emerging metadata standards such as Dublin Core and other standards such as Unicode and RDF, CORC broadens the range of libraries and librarians able to participate. Current plans are for OCLC as a full service in July 2000

- Abstract
- Digital libraries are here to stay, and the conversion of traditional to digital is inevitable. Appropriate care should be taken to develop systems and managerial skills as well. Globalisation of the digital concept will not be possible until we overcome the technological gap between developed and developing countries. Measures are needed to overcome the menace of computer viruses and also unauthorised use. Sufficient thought has not been given to attaining self-sustained growth. It is therefore essential to explore new avenues for funding, particularly since initial investment in digital libraries is high, as is maintenance.
