- Abstract
- Even as the number of Web-enabled resources and knowledge repositories continues its unabated climb, both general purpose and domain-specific metadata schemas are in vigorous development. While this might be viewed as a promising direction for more precise access to disparate metadata-enabled resources, semantically-oriented tools to facilitate cross-domain searching by end-users unfamiliar with structured approaches to language or particular metadata schema conventions have received little attention. This paper describes findings from a focus group assessment of a natural language "gateway" previously derived from mapping, then categorizing terminology from nine metadata schemas. Semantic ambiguities identified in relation to three core metadata elements, namely, "Names", "Title", and "Subject", are discussed relative to data collection techniques employed in the research. Implications for further research, and particularly that pertaining to the design of an Interlingua gateway to multilingual, metadata-enabled resources, are addressed.

- Abstract
- Digital libraries (DLs) are a resource for answering complex questions. Up to now, such systems mainly support keyword-based searching and browsing. The mapping from a research question to keywords and the assessment whether an article is relevant for a research question is completely with the user. In this paper, we present a two-layered digital library model. The aim is to enhance current DLs to support different levels of human cognitive acts, thus enabling new kinds of knowledge exchange among library users. The low layer of the model, namely, the tactical cognition support layer, provides users with requested relevant documents, as searching and browsing do. The upper layer of the model, namely, the strategic cognition support layer, not only provides users with relevant documents but also directly and intelligently answers users' cognitive questions. On the basis of the proposed model, we divide the DL information space into two subspaces, i.e., a knowledge subspace and a document subspace, where documents in the document subspace serves as the justification for the corresponding knowledge in the knowledge subspace. Detailed description of the knowledge subspace and its construction, as well as query facilities against the enhanced DLs for users' knowledge sharing and exchange, are particularly discussed.

- Abstract
- A primary goal of the NSDL Materials Digital Library (MatDL) is to bring materials science research and education closer together. MatDL is exploring the various roles digital libraries can serve in the materials science community including: 1) supporting a virtual lab, 2) developing markup language applications, and 3) building tools for metadata capture. MatDL is being integrated into an MIT virtual laboratory experience. Early student self-assessment survey results expressed positive opinions of the potential value of MatDL in supporting a virtual lab and in accomplishing additional educational objectives. A separate survey suggested that the effectiveness of a virtual lab may approach that of a physical lab on some laboratory learning objectives. MatDL is collaboratively developing a materials property grapher (KSU and MIT) and a submission tool (KSU and U-M). MatML is an extensible markup language for exchanging materials information developed by materials data experts in industry, government, standards organizations, and professional societies. The web-based MatML grapher allows students to compare selected materials properties across approximately 80 MatML-tagged materials. The MatML grapher adds value in this educational context by allowing students to utilize real property data to make optimal material selection decisions. The submission tool has been integrated into the regular workflow of U-M students and researchers generating nanostructure images. It prompts users for domain-specific information, automatically generating and attaching keywords and editable descriptions.
