    Abstract
    A research agenda for the study of digital reference is presented. The agenda stems from a research symposium held at Harvard University, Boston, Massachusetts in August 2002. The agenda defines digital reference as "the use of human intermediation to answer questions in a digital environment." The agenda also proposes the central research question in digital reference: "How can human expertise be effectively and efficiently incorporated into information systems to answer user questions?" The definition and question are used to outline a research agenda centered an how the exploration of digital reference relates to other fields of inquiry.

    Abstract
    Informationssuche findet heute vor allem im Internet statt. Sie hat sich damit mehr und mehr von den räumlichen und zeitlichen Beschränkungen gelöst, die durch die Erreichbarkeit und die Öffnungszeiten von Bibliotheken gegeben waren. Informationssuchende wollen möglichst rund um die Uhr an sieben Tagen in der Woche vom heimischen PC aus oder mobil via Notebook in weltweit bereitgestellten Informationsangeboten recherchieren und dabei auch professionelle Auskunftsservices in Anspruch nehmen. Um diesen veränderten Bedingungen und Bedürfnissen Rechnung zu tragen, bieten Bibliotheken zunehmend auch netzbasierte Dienstleistungen an. Die SUB Göttingen führte im Jahr 2002 den elektronischen Auskunftsservice "Frag' die SUB" ein, der es Nutzern weltweit ermöglicht, über ein Webformular Fragen zu den verschiedenen Sammelschwerpunkten der SUB, aber auch allgemeine Fragen nach Ressourcen und Dienstleistungen zu stellen.

    Abstract
    This paper describes a study conducted to determine the paths digital reference services take through a general process model of asynchronous digital reference. A survey based on the general process model was conducted; each decision point in this model provided the basis for at least one question. Common, uncommon, and wished-for practices are identified, as well as correlations between characteristics of services and the practices employed by those services. Identification of such trends has implications for the development of software tools for digital reference. This study presents a snapshot of the state-of-the-art in digital reference as of late 2001- early 2002, and validates the general process model of asynchronous digital reference.

    Abstract
    Die Hessische Landesbibliothek Wiesbaden weist eine in diesem Bibliothekstyp häufige, sehr gemischte Benutzerstruktur auf. Fast die Hälfte der Nutzerschaft besteht aus Schülern und Studenten, die andere Hälfte verteilt sich auf ein breites Berufs- und Altersspektrum; zum Kundenkreis gehören auch viele Rentner und Pensionäre. Das Informations- und Schulungsangebot der Bibliothek muss entsprechend aufgefächert sein, um den sehr heterogenen Voraussetzungen und dem ganz unterschiedlichen Bedarf der Kunden zu entsprechen. Seit Oktober 2002 bietet die Hessische Landesbibliothek Wiesbaden Einführungen in die Internet-Recherche an. Die Internet-Einführungen bilden ein weiteres Modul im Schulungsangebot der Bibliothek, das vom Maustraining bis zu Einführungen in den OPAC und die inzwischen zahlreichen elektronischen Datenbanken und Zeitschriften der Bibliothek reicht. Mit diesem neuen Angebot will die Bibliothek einen Beitrag zur Vermittlung von Informationskompetenz im Bereich der neuen Medien leisten. Natürlich kann man in einer 90-minütigen Veranstaltung keine umfassende Informationskompetenz vermitteln, dies ist jedoch auch nicht das Ziel unserer Internet-Einführungen. Vielmehr sollen vor allem Personen, die vorher keine Berührung mit dem Internet hatten, befähigt werden, erste Schritte zur Erkundung des Angebots im Internet zu unternehmen und dann selbständig und gezielt weiter zu recherchieren. Aber auch Fortgeschrittene profitieren insbesondere von den kleinen Gruppen und der Möglichkeit, spezielle Fragen und Probleme in diesem Rahmen klären zu können. Das kostenlose Angebot richtet sich ausdrücklich nicht nur an eingetragene Nutzer, sondern an alle Interessierten, die privat oder beruflich Recherchen im Internet durchführen.
