    Abstract
    This article seeks to shift the literature an chat-based reference services beyond the current spate of case studies and discussions of emerging standards and best practices in providing chat-based reference, to a higher level of discussion an the creation and discussion of theoretical frameworks to unite these standards and practices. The article explores the varlous steps in the process of providing synchronous, chat-based reference, as well as issues involved in providing such service at each step. The purpose of this exploration is twofold: First, this article presents some open research questions at each step in the process of providing chatbased reference service. Second, the entire process of providing chat-based reference is viewed as a whole, and a model of the provision of chat-based reference service is developed at a high level of abstraction. lt is hoped that this model may serve as a conceptual framework for future discussions of and development of applications for chat-based reference.

    Abstract
    This article discusses the history and emergence of non-library commercial and noncommercial information services on the World Wide Web. These services are referred to as "expert services," while the term "digital reference" is reserved for library-related on-line information services. Following suggestions in library and information literature regarding quality standards for digital reference, researchers make clear the importance of developing a practicable methodology for critical examination of expert services, and consideration of their relevance to library and other professional information services. A methodology for research in this area and initial data are described. Two hundred forty questions were asked of 20 expert service sites. Findings include performance measures such as response rate, response time, and verifiable answers. Sites responded to 70% of all questions, and gave verifiable answers to 69% of factual questions. Performance was generally highest for factual type questions. Because expert services are likely to continue to fill a niche for factual questions in the digital reference environment, implications for further research and the development of digital reference services may be appropriately turned to source questions. This is contrary to current practice and the emergence of digital reference services reported in related literature thus far.

    Abstract
    Reviews the significant changes in information technology over the last 50 years and considers the many implications for information services. The Internet, global access to distributed information sources, and remote users all present challenges to would-be providers of information services. As resources proliferate, the information professional must develop new methods for locating and accessing them: reliance on publishers and reviews is no longer sufficient. Information service providers can now serve more diverse clienteles, but must be aware of the greater range of information needs and styles of information seeking.     Abstract
    Taking a step beyond Meta search engines which require Web site evaluation skills and a knowledge of how to construct effective search statements, we encounter the concept of a seamless, Web-based library. These are electronic libraries created by information professionals, Meta sites for the 21st Century. Here is a place where average people with average Internet skills can find significant Web sites arranged under a hierarchy of subject categories. Having observed client behavior in a university library setting for a quarter of a century, it is apparent that the extent to which information is used has always been determined by content applicable to user needs, an easy-to-understand design, and high visibility.     Abstract
    Reports on the Southern California Online Users Group annual workshop, which broke all previous attendance records. The topic was 'Radical redesign of reference and research', and common threads among speakers included the need for a new reference/research model that will scale with future needs, and the now common standard of round the clock service availability. Print could become a secondary medium to digital data, primarily delivered over the Internet, and that information vendors be forced to change pricing structures. Librarians from public, corporate, and academic sectors have begun building Web sites around links to their own data and to other quality sites as a means of providing 24 hour services. Vendors might consider creating new price comparison services, or offering proce guarantees, to compete with this new phenomenon

    Abstract
    Zentrale Erwerbung von wissenschaftlichen Informationsressourcen im Netz der virtuellen Hybridbibliothek der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft »Excellent Information Services for Excellent Research« ist das Motto der Anfang 2007 gegründeten Max Planck Digital Library (MPDL). Diese ambitionierte Leitlinie würdigt die Relevanz eines modernen wissenschaftlichen Informationsmanagements für eine exzellente Spitzenforschung. Mit Gründung der MPDL wurde in der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft (MPG) ein entscheidender Schritt zur zentralen Unterstützung eines bisher weitgehend dezentralen Informationsversorgungsnetzes gegangen. Die Entscheidung zu einer Kombination aus zentraler und dezentraler Informationsversorgung trägt den Veränderungen Rechnung, die sich durch die Möglichkeiten der digitalen Welt ergeben haben. Intention der Neugründung ist jedoch nicht, ein unter der Prämisse der Institutsautonomie etabliertes, wohl durchdachtes Literatur- und Informationsversorgungssystem sukzessive durch eine zentrale Einheit abzulösen, sondern gemäß der Maxime der Subsidiarität Stärken von dezentralen und von zentralen Einheiten zu einem effizienten Gesamtsystem zu ergänzen. Der vorliegende Artikel skizziert das Netz der Informationsversorgung in der MPG mit dem Schwerpunkt auf der Versorgung mit elektronischen Medien des institutsübergreifenden Bedarfs. Dieser Schwerpunkt kennzeichnet eines der Hauptarbeitsfelder der MPDL, deren weitere Services und Arbeitsfelder kontextgebunden und ausgewählt vorgestellt werden sollen?

    Abstract
    Die Hochschulbibliotheken in Nordrhein-Westfalen betrachten die Vermittlung von Informationskompetenz als wichtige Zukunftsaufgabe und beschäftigen sich seit mehr als zwei Jahren intensiv mit diesem Thema. Das Hochschulbibliothekszentrum NRW (HBZ) führt in enger Abstimmung mit der AG Informationskompetenz Fortbildungsveranstaltungen durch und unterstützt damit die Bibliotheken in ihrem Vorhaben, die Angebote bedarfsgerecht weiter zu entwickeln, professioneller zu gestalten und in die Hochschullehre zu integrieren. Nach einem ersten Workshop im Dezember 2002, der sich schwerpunktmäßig mit der Formulierung von Standards und mit Marketingkonzepten beschäftigte, und mehreren Seminaren zu speziellen Fragestellungen trafen sich die Multiplikatorinnen und Multiplikatoren aus zwanzig nordrhein-westfälischen Hochschulbibliotheken vom 8. bis 9. Dezember 2003 wieder in Bergisch-Gladbach. Entsprechend dem Charakter eines Workshop nahm die Gruppenarbeit mit konkreten Arbeitsaufträgen einen breiten Raum ein. Aus der Fülle der behandelten Fragestellungen haben wir drei Themen herausgegriffen und berichten über die Auftaktveranstaltung im Plenum sowie über die Ergebnisse zweier Arbeitsgruppen, die sich mit der Formulierung eines Gesamtkonzepts der Hochschule zur Informationskompetenz und mit der quantitativen Evaluierung der Schulungsangebote im Rahmen einer differenzierten Statistik beschäftigten. Ein weiteres wichtiges Anliegen war die Erarbeitung von Instrumenten zur qualitativen Evaluierung der Schulungsaktivitäten. Die konzipierten Fragebögen werden derzeit mit professioneller Unterstützung überarbeitet und sollen im Sommersemester 2004 testweise in mehreren nordrhein-westfälischen Hochschulbibliotheken eingesetzt werden.

    Abstract
    Die Weiten des Internet tendieren ins Unendliche - kaum etwas, was dort nicht vorhanden zu sein scheint. Google rühmt sich, dass jetzt die Suche auf über acht Milliarden Websites möglich ist und hat mit dem Einscannen der Bestände von US-amerikanischen und englischen Bibliotheken schon das nächste größere Projekt in Angriff genommen. Auch Microsoft schickt sich an, eine ernstzunehmende Konkurrenz in Sachen Internetrecherche zu werden. Hinzu kommt, dass das Internet eine immer größere Nutzung erfährt, 2004 lag diese bei 55,3 Prozent der Bevölkerung ab 14 Jahren - doch das alles heißt nicht, dass die Nutzer 3 im Gegenzug auch immer bessere Recherchefähigkeiten aufweisen. Es vergeht kein Tag, an dem im Informationsdienst von Bibliotheken nicht der Satz »Im Internet habe ich schon geguckt, dafind ich nix!« fällt. 100.000 Treffer zu einer Suchanfrage zu erhalten ist nicht die Kunst, aber fünf relevante Treffer zu erhalten, die noch dazu einer kritischen Bewertung standhalten (Stichwort »Information Literacy«), das bedarf eines professionellen Informationsvermittlers - eines Bibliothekars! Noch nie waren so viele Nutzer im Netz und zugleich so viele so unzufrieden. Wäre es nicht Aufgabe der Bibliotheken diese (potenziellen) Kunden aufzufangen, bevor sie in den Weiten des Internet verloren gehen? Dieses Auffangnetz existiert bereits - bekannt als Digital Reference Service, gebündelt durch die Funktionen, die das Web Contact Center bereit hält.

    Abstract
    The ability to discriminate and distinguish among individual documents in the ever-increasing volume of information available through digital networks is becoming more and more difficult. With websites being added to the 100 million installed base by tens of thousands per month, information overload is inevitable (H. Berghel, 1997). There are 2 basic paradigms for dealing with this information overload: filtering (information filtering, 1992) information before it reaches the end-user, and customizing the information after it arrives (Berleant & Berghel, 1994). Filtering remains primarily a server side activity since filtering at the client-side would necessitate unnecessary downloads. Information customization is a client-side activity designed to pick up where information filtering leaves off. In this article, we describe our vision of information customization and, along the way, chronicle the development of our proof-of-concept prototype, Cyberbrowser, for customizing information on the Web
