    Abstract
Reports an interview with Alec Gallimore, Central Library Manager of Manchester Public Libraries, where the public library has joined with the Citizens Advice Bureau, a national firm of management consultants, local voluntary groups and city council departments to establish the Manchester Community Information Network. The project is designed to proved community information through public terminals in the form of Web pages with access to local databases. Notes that there is a project de develop touch screen kiosks

    Abstract
Many libraries manage Web sites intended to provide their users with online resources suitable for answering reference questions. Most of these sites can be analyzed in terms of their depth, and their organizing and searching features. Composing a typology based on these factors sheds light on the critical design decisions that influence whether users of these sites succees or fail to find information easily, rapidly and accurately. The same analysis highlights some larger design issues, both for Web sites and for information management at large

    Abstract
Reports results of a survey, conducted at Nassau Community College; New York State, of academic reference librarians' use of the Internet at the reference desk at 2 year and 4 year colleges and universities throughout New York State. Concludes that: library managers must understand the value of the Internet and provide access at the reference desk; they must allow adequate time, staff and advanced training; support from academic computing centres and specialists is essential; reference librarians mus develop the necessary attitudes and skills; library involvement in the organization and management of the Internet is essential; and graduate library schools must offer courses on the Internet

    Abstract
In order to provide researchers at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), Washington, DC, with access to information resources at their desk tops, the Ruth H. Hooker Research Library and Technical Information Center of the NRL installed a networked information utility called InfoNet. Using a single menuing system, the InfoNet is available from anywhere on the campus FDDI/Ethernet network. Researchers using any type of computing workstation or dumb terminal are provided with access to CD-ROM databases, the library's online catalogue, laboratory management information database, and state of the art Knowbot prototypes to search the Internet. The InfoNet also makes extensive use of Internet electronic mail to provide Alias accounts, ListServ forums, and to send search results to end users. The InfoNet system hardware and software consists entirely of industry standard components and makes extensive use of the TCP/IP suite of protoclos

    Abstract
This work tackles one of the fundamental problems of information management - how to get the right information to the right person at the right time. It provides a practical framework to enable information services to gather information from users in order to aid information system design, and to monitor the effectiveness of an information service. This new edition has been fully revised and now has increased coverage of the Internet. The Web raises many problems when it comes to meeting information needs - authority and overload, for example - and these problems make an effective information needs analysis even more crucial. There is a new methodology section on Web log analysis and focus group interviews. Practical advice is given concerning interview technique and an interview schedule is included.

    Abstract
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to examine the question of whether modern digital information technologies damage their users' cognitive capacities in some way, and to speculate on how librarians should adapt their services as a consequence of the controversy surrounding this question. Design/methodology/approach - The paper reviews some recent literature on this subject, combined with an examination of the role played by technology, librarians and government in determining the nature of our society's response to problematic aspects of the use of digital, internet-based applications in education. Findings - The paper finds that highly differentiated and highly polemical attitudes to this subject mean that librarians have to acknowledge the existence of important challenges to the apparent consensus about the way information technologies should be used in education in Western societies. This has important consequences for the approach to collection building (the balance between digital versus print provision), for library building design, and for the value which should be placed on systematic information literacy teaching. The existence of such an important debate should also embolden information professionals to make their own insights into these issues more widely known. Research limitations/implications - Some of the findings in this paper are amenable to further development through practitioner-oriented research; however, the bulk of the content used for this paper is derived from the literature on this topic, so there is no original research data presented to back up the assertions made by the author. It is simply an account of a debate which has to be acknowledged by librarians. Practical implications - The implications of the issues under discussion in the paper are presented in clear practical terms, and the consequences for library management made explicit. Social implications - The clash between two different theories of learning and information provision is debated and the links with issues of government policy are explored. The social connections between education and wealth generation are brought into this debate. Originality/value - The paper provides a useful, up-to-date briefing on recent controversial issues in education, information management and socio-economic policy making.
