    Abstract
    This book explores how personality traits may influence attitude, behaviour, and reaction to information. In threatening health situations, for instance, calm people with high self-reliance often react by actively seeking out diagnostic information and treatment alternatives, while more anxious persons may become stagnated and depressed and deliberately avoid information. Persistence and conscientiousness often leads to a problem-solving approach to information seeking: structured and organized with a focus on the outcome. Openness to experience again is often related to enjoyment of information exploration, sometimes to the point of experiencing flow, total immersion in the experience. This book will cover personality related information reactions in contexts such as everyday life, decision-making, work, studies and human-computer interaction.This book introduces a little researched area which is current and needed in our Information Age. It combines knowledge from psychology and information studies.

On another, it is a commentary an changing information roles and responsibilities in organizations. The main theme is aimed at information professionals (usually librarians) who want to learn the nuts and bolts of how to conduct an "information audit," how to develop an "information policy," and how to create an "information strategy." The subtext-that information management is everyone's responsibility-is a more radical (and interesting) message. An information strategy as defined by the author is an action plan for managing and applying an organization's information resources and supporting its essential knowledge base (the people who contribute and use information to achieve the organization's objectives). The emphasis is an a specific problem, function, or departmentnot the entire enterprise. For example, a strategy might be aimed at capturing knowledge that is transferred informally among employees or making an information system more efficient, less error prone, and more accessible. According to Orna, an information strategy is the last stage of a three-step process that begins with an audit (needs assessment), which is the basis tot a policy (objectives, priorities, and metrics). As she defines it, the audit describes "what is" in terms of information use. The policy describes "what should be," and the strategy shows how to get from "what is" to "what should be."     In their introduction, the authors state that the book is intended for use by researchers, administrators, practitioners, and graduate students. Although too narrow in scope to serve as a primary text for a graduate level reference course, it could serve as a more theoretical complement to a standard text, such as Katz's Introduction to Reference Work Vols. 1 and 2 (2002), or Bopp and Smith's Reference and Infortnation Services: An Introduction (2001). These more traditional texts are heavily pragmatic in nature; Saxton and Richardson's work could help to bring theory and methodological assiduousness into the reference and information services classroom. The major contribution of this work is that it brings a badly needed statistical rigor to the study of reference services. It also serves as statistical support for the use of the RUSA Guidelines since it indicates that following the RUSA Guidelines is the strongest predictor of user satisfaction with a reference transaction. Indeed, the most important practical lesson to be learned from this study is that educators who teach reference and other information service courses should familiarize their students with the RUSA Guidelines and that practitioners should adhere to them as much as possible. Regrettably, the RUSA Guidelines are never summarized within the text, a problem for readers unfamiliar with them. In brief, the Guidelines were developed by an ad hoc RUSA committee charged with "identify[ing] and recommend[ing] observable behavioral attributes that could be correlated with positive patron perceptions of reference librarian performance" (RASD Guidelines, 1996, [RUSA was previously called RASD]). The resulting behavioral attributes include: approachability, interest, listening/inquiring, searching, and follow-up. Thus, the Guidelines couch the reference process largely in terms of human communication and librarian-user interaction. It would have been particularly useful if a discussion as to why the RUSA Guidelines lead to improved reference service were included in the book, but this topic is not addressed. Perhaps the authors' future work will head down this path. Nonetheless, Understanding Reference Transactions is a useful addition to the field of reference service research, and it is a worthwhile addition for most large academic library collections."
