    Abstract
Distributed digital information, seamlessly integrated into a comprehensive National Information Infrastructure (NII), is essential to the realization of a secular, communitarian society. Explores the philosophical ideas behind evolving computer networks. Examines some assumptions about the meaning and purpose of emerging electronic communities

    Abstract
Librarians at Arizona University Library and the Prima Community College Library are using the WWW as a vehicle for promoting a heightened sense of community through their exhibit: Through Our Parent Eyes: Tuscon's Diverse Community. Its purpose is to acknowledge the community's multicultural heritage through digital histories that combine historical images and text with stories of Tuscon told by some of Tuscon's founding members. Describes the experience of the 2 libraries in building the Web site exhibits featuring Tuscon's traditionally underrepresented groups and points to ways in which the Web site may be developed by highlighting key elements, developmental considerations, goal setting, costs, benefits, and rights and permissions

    Abstract
In December 1993 Tilburg University and Elsevier Science started a project with respect to the full text electronic delivery of journal articles. Users will be able to browse through articles from their desktop and make prints of relevant articles. Several research issues which are of importance both for the publisher and for the library are part of the project. It is a next step in the campus-wide electronic information provision at Tilburg University. The university created a well elaborated IT infrastructure which was already able to integrate library services with other computing facilities on 2.000 desktop PCs

    Abstract
Findings of the Croydon Libraries Internet Project (CLIP), 1994 Mar 96, which aimed to assess the value of the Internet for UK public libraries. Reviews the Internet as a staff tool (the Electronic Reference model), the potential benefits of providing public access and a range of technical issues which will be relevant to public libraries establishing such services

    Abstract
Describes a project which the library of the Univ. of Sheffield in England completed at the request of the British Library Research and Development Department between 1990 and 1992. The project investigated the application of multimedia in libraries and produced a multimedia demonstrator to train staff in handling the reference interview. Explains how the demonstrator was produced and the factors involved in the cost of multimedia authoring

    Abstract
Describes a project aimed at setting up a 1 stop scientific, technical and commerical information service for technical companies at Belasis Hall Technology Park, Cleveland, UK. The project accomplished this by: identifying the information needs of the existing and potential tenants; establishing how best to meet those needs (paying a special attention to the role of online information) and setting up a 1 year pilot project: disseminating the results of the project for replication elsewhere and making information provision an integral part of science park design; promoting information as a basis for problem solving and decision making; promoting close links with the users; determining which sources and methods of delivery are most relevant (patents, trade directories, market research reports, online searches); developing a charging policy for the service with a view to the service becoming self financing; increasing the partners' experience in resource sharing; developing a training needs analysis for both providers and users; developing performance indicators; and monitoring the service provided

    Abstract
Describes the Seymour project being run by libraries in Maryland which aims to bring the benefits of electronic information to all state residents by 2000. Describes how the telecommunications infrastructure will be developed. The services offered will include: searching for books, articles, facts, helping agencies and government and other information. The service will also act as a gateway to the Internet network. Shows how the project is being set up and organized. Discusses policy issues and challenges poses by the project

    Abstract
Notes the challenges facing public libraries in the provision of library services to users who are becoming increasingly involved in telecommuting and are therefore tending to demand the delivery of information services (including interloans and document delivery) in some kind of telecommuted form. Trends include the increasing bias towards the acquisition of digital materials and information resources at the expense of traditional formats, and the use of facsimile transmission to fax materials from the library to the user's desk at the place of work. Notes the specific example of Ohio State University Library which enables users to call and learn if a particular item is held by the library and have the option of having it paged to them electronically, held for pickup, or mailed to a campus address. Discusses the steps necessary to evaluate the cost benefits of such services

    Abstract
Suggests that the public library system in America is unique among nations for universal accessibility and openness to knowledge at community level. Suggests 4 features are distinctive: continuous expansion of the body of knowledge; knowledge accessibility in a free society; libraries as 'temples of pluralism', and simultaneously a unifying force in communal relations. Ideals are threatened by the information flood generated by new technology, with its repercussions on the communal functions of libraries. The Library of Congress's National Digital Library aims at a leadership role in the new electronic environment

    Abstract
Describes the EDUCATE (End User Courses in Information Access through Communications Technology) project for end user training in information access. EDUCATE is a Commission of the European Communities, Libraries Programme Project, involving: Limerick University, Ireland (coordinator); and the Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussees, France; Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden; Imperial College, London; and Plymouth University, UK; and Barcelona University, Spain. the aim is to produce a model self paced user education course in the selection and use of information tools. Courses have been produced within physics and electric and electronic engineering. the project started in Feb 94 and will run for 3 years. Describes the course ddesign and the media developed. Discusses the use of networks in connection with EDUCATE and notes the tools and interfaces used

    Abstract
Princeton University is using computer networking to forge links with the local community. Describes the work of its Office of Computing and Information Technology. It maintains a campus-wide information system Princeton New Network which is available for public access and supports local schools in a variety of ways the most recent project being to provide Internet access to the Princeton Regional Schools

    Abstract
In May 92 the Humanities and Social Science Library at Monash University introduced a reference telephone inquiries as a 12-month pilot project. Incoming calls to the main information desk at Clayton Campus were diverted to en extension staffed by paraprofessionals away from the public area. Discusses the service provided, staffing, training and ongoing communication, equipment, statistics kept, benefits to reference and technical staff and library patrons and future plans
