    Abstract
Discusses the community information role of the public library. Provides examples of how a library can be a negative force in a local community if it is not connected to that community. Librarians must understand their communities and form cooperative partnerships with other agencies. Gives examples of this from Pittsburgh libraries.

    Abstract
This annotated bibliography lists materials dealing with information literacy including instruction in the use of information resources and research and computer skills related to retrieving, using, and evaluating information. This review, the 21st to be published in RSR, includes items in English published in 1994. A few are not annotated because the compiler could not obtain copies of them for this review

    Abstract
Explores some of the issues associated with the implementation of total quality management (TQM) in the service environment as they might apply to information services. In implementing TQM it is necessary to establish some basic definitions. SERVQUAL is an instrument which has been widely tested as a means of measuring service quality. Reviews briefly the literature concerned with measuring service quality as a forum in which to explore the concept of service quality

    Abstract
Provides 5 tips for using the Internet in reference work: use the rsources that are physically present in the library first as they will probably be faster to find there than on the Internet; use collection development skills to assess Internet resources before they are actually consulted in a reference transaction; use Veronica to search the Internet when there is no clear starting point; keep in mind that the Internet is heavily used and that it may not be possible to connect to an Internet site; and use Internet discussion groups for librarians to post reference questions

    Abstract
Suggests that when conflicting philosophies of service exist within an academic reference department, users may receive various levels of service from different users, which may be disappointing or confusing. In order to provide service which is consistent in nature and scope, librarians need to embrace the same or very similar service philosophy, and the head of the department should lead in this endeavour. Argues that this philosophy should be based on the department's shared values, which need in turn to be articulated

    Abstract
Expert systems have promised much more than they have delivered. Although expert systems in libraries have been discussed extensively, there are few working systems. Development rarely progresses beyond the prototype. Presents a case study of the construction of a simple expert system at Banktown City library's community information service involving a narrow, precise domain. Observes the working of the system. The benefits of simple expert systems are that they are useful to knowledgeable users, they may be used for training and can give guided and structured information in a way that books and pamphlets do not

    Abstract
Supports the current opinion and practice concerning extending bibliographic instruction (BI) in academic libraries to larger forms of electronic access. However, the BI model of offering isolated classes is inappropriate - it ignores the fact that information finding is best taught as part of the broader scholarly process and the reality that exposure to systems like the WWW is increasingly initiated in academic courses. Presents an argument for a team-teaching model of information finding instruction, stressing the needs of doctoral students

    Abstract
Traces the growth of computerized information handling techniques in academic library reference services in the final decades of the 20th Century with particular reference to online databases and the Internet and WWW. Concludes that the pace of change is not likely to decelerate in the foreseeable future and thus the complexity and uncertainty of reference librarianship will increase

    Abstract
As academic libraries introduce and expand networked access to electronic information services and databases, a new group of remote library users will emerge. These campus remote users will be in a unique situation which requires support services that blend services provided to on site library users and remote users. Offers suggestions in providing these support services

    Abstract
The effectiveness of an information system is related to its readability, browsability, searchability and interactive assistance. Interactive assistance provides customized help for particular users in particular situations. It can be proactive or restrictive. Systems have been developed for reference work and CD-ROM based bibliographic indexes. Prototype systems for the Internet include: Ask Alcuin, meta-search engines, and WebArcher

    Abstract
Reports results of a questionnaire survey designed to identify electronic, public access, community information systems and the degree to which such systems provide consumer health information. The extent and nature of this information is compared with the requirements of government guidelines, and the suitability of theses systems as a major source of consumer health information, both a present and in the future

    Abstract
Reports on a survey of information gathering among the science, social science and humanities faculty of the State University of New York (SUNY) College at Fredonia, New York. The survey reveals highly active information gathering. Formal sources of information are more important than informal sources, and use of books and journals varies across disciplinary areas. Presents a 2 dimensional definition of information gathering in terms of formal and global sources of information

    Abstract
As the bibliographic database WorldCat has grown, libraries have found other uses for it that goes beyond cataloguing. Foremost among them has been resource sharing. With the introduction of the FirstSearch servie in 1991, OCLC moved beyond bibliography to provide not just information about information, but the information itself. The next stage of development for FirstSearch will see the introduction of OCLC FirstSearch Electronic Collections Online, Electronic Archiving, and Inttegrated Searching
