    Abstract
Selecting electronic resources requires both a policy statement to guide collection development and management and procedures to manage the process of selecting and handling these resources. Both policy and procedures must be crafted in response to local priorities, resources, limitations, and organizational structure. This paper examines issues that should be addressed when developing local procedures. Particular emphasis is given to preparing a mechanism to guide selection. One possible model - a decision-making matrix to guide selection between various media and modes of information delivery - is explored.

    Abstract
Reports a survey of all academic members of the Association of Research Libraries in the 4th quarter of 1997 which examined how academic libraries incorporate electronic information sources into their reference activities and the effects on libraries services. There was a response rate of 68 per cent, Compares results surveys carried out in 1991 and 1994. The survey covered: numbers of computers access options (intermediary, end user online, CD-ROM locally loaded databases or those accessible through the library catalogue and the Internet. There is a trend away from print resources, particularly indexing and abstracting materials, and away from CD-ROM LANs and local loading of databases towards remote online resources

    Abstract
Argues that the management of reference services in academic libraries is posed a challenge by the influx of electronic resources, and that traditional apporaches to reference management lack a conceptual framework of effectiveness, and emphasize mainly internal processes, paying scant regard to the turbulent environments that libraries face. Presents the competing values approach to effectiveness as a broad integration of existing models of organisational effectiveness. Discusses the implications of this approach and examines diversified team structures as a possible solution to the problems of managing reference services in the electronic age

    Abstract
The increasingly electronic environment in today's academic library is placing new demands on managing reference services. Staff are faced with selecting, implementing, and servicing a wide-range of services and resources. This necessitates learning the new and integrating it into the established. At the same time, users are becoming more varied. Not only is their demographic profile changing, but more users with interdisciplinary interests are seeking assistance. Reference librarians are also working to establish new interfaces with the increasing number of users who widh to access resources without coming into the library. This article addresses the management of reference services in a medium-sized research library to meet these needs. A model for planning reference services is presented along with a staff organizational structure to meet agreed upon objectives

    Abstract
The increased interconnectivity of academic library resources has led to a growth in the use of electronic media and diminishing dependence on print. An expanding number of remote users and the growth of distance education have led to increased expectations for access. Whether they call themselves digital, virtual or electronic, academic libraries force the challenge of preparing for the millenium through technology. Discusses the role of academic libraries and librarians; cooperation between the library and the computer centre; leading and managing libraries; measurement of library effectiveness; financial resources; staffing; diversity; customer service; reference services; library instruction; library design for technology; the Internet; library automation; integrated systems; cooperative computer networks; document delivery; collection management; digitization and electronic publishing; and cooperation between libraries; vendors and publishing

    Abstract
Reports on a survey of ARL (Ass. of Research Libraries) members in the USA in 1994, which sought to find out the electronic reference services that are offered by these libraries and how the services affect reference staff, the expectations of users, and user instruction. The services covered include CD-ROM, intermediary online searching, end user online (e.g. FirstSearch), tape loaded databases and user access to the Internet, including electronic mail facilities. Highlights the additional workload the provision of these services involves, and the sometimes unrealistic expectations of users especially with regard to Internet resources

    Abstract
The Brandeis University main library, Waltham, MA, reference service scored highly on the Wisconsin-Ohio Reference Evaluation Programme (WOREP). Reports on a site visit to Brandeis carried out in 1996 to determine how its reference library performance differs from the perfromance of the typical academic reference deparrtment in the areas covered by the WOREP data. Findings indicate that intensive use of electronic resources, a good reference collection, good architecture, administrative support and adequate time provided by the consultation model contributed to service quality
