    Abstract
Reports on the 'Infomerger' project, undertaken at Horn Library, Babson College, Mass., to solve the problem of library users being confused about the functions of the reference desk and the circulation desk. A library staff brainstorming session led to the decision to combine the functions of both the reference desk and the circulation sedk into a staffed, reference point, called the Information Desk (InfoDesk); and a self service counter, called the Information Kiosk. This development was inspired by a similar initiative at Brandeis University, Boston, Mass., and reported in Journal of academic librarianship 18(1992) no.5, S.276-280. Reports on experiences of the actual running of the InfoDesk noting some of the minor teething problems encountered. The role of the Lotus Notes databases in the support of the service ir reported along with the need for finance to install the required multitasking workstations and physical changes to the library building. Reports some of the reactions of the library staff to the success of the InfoMerger. Summarizes results of user feedback from the point of service surveys and the most requested materials at the reference desk

    Abstract
Urges librarians engaged in bibliographical instruction to develop programmes in mass media news sources, and suggests how the theory of news framing and sourcing may be used to develop critical thinking, in particular for multicultural populations. Reports on a comparison of 2 news topics as they were covered by what are described as corporate news sources and independent non corporate sources. Suggests ways in which decisions about framing and sourcing can serve an ideological agenda that is not sensitive to multicultural viewpoints

    Abstract
The paper reports on the early lessons learned in the process of forming an online community for librarians from different organisations and sectors to discuss knowledge management. Time, critical mass, diversity of membership, focus, information and communication technology, incentives, concepts of membership, services and leadership were all factors in the slow coalescing of the group as an active self-sustaining network.

    Abstract
The Los Anegeles Free-Net, an interactive community information resource, was established in part to help community members become more effective consumers of health care services providing timely, expert answers to anonymously asked medical questions at no charge. The aim was to decrease unnecessary doctor patient encounters, encourage effective preventive health measures, and to improve the overall results of health care in the community. Results found that: a small annual registration fee generates both moral and financial public suport; demographic information from registered users can help direct attempts at enfranchising all members of the community, toll free access, free public instruction sessions, moderated forums, extensive volunteer help, and encryption security are encouraged, while Internet censorship is difficult and counterproductive; access to Internet resources is important; a critical mass of available physicians to answer questions must be matched with a critical level of question input from this type of interactive medical information resource to function in a time sensitive fashion

    Abstract
This paper reports the results of the second stage of the Citizenship Information research project funded by the BLR&IC: a nation-wide survey, by personal doorstep interview, of the citizenship information needs of almost 900 members of the UK public. Major findings include: that the public obtain most of their information on current issues via the mass media, and that they generally feel well informed on these issues. The public feel, however, that government is not doing enough to inform them on European Monetary Union and on local government cutbacks. Small proportions of the sample had encountered problems concerning employment, education, housing or welfare benefits, and had consulted a range of information sources in order to overcome these problems. Over a quarter of respondents had experienced disadvantage through a lack of access to information. The majority of respondents felt well informed about areas relating to citizenship, but significant proportions were poorly informed in legal rights, welfare benefits and local politics. A highly significant majority (91.7 per cent) believed that freedom of information was important for exercising their rights as citizens. Respondents tended to overestimate their voting patterns, but there was little evidence of participation in other forms of political activity. Although access to computers in the home is presently limited, the majority of respondents would use computers to vote, convey opinions to government and obtain government information. Public libraries were the preferred source of government information, and were seen as appropriate locations for a range of other types of citizenship information.

    Abstract
Examines the information seeking practices and strategies used by interdisciplinary scientists as they work in 'boundaries' between disciplines. As researchers gather and disseminate information outside their core knowledge domains through personal networks, conferences and the literature, they interact with objects, methods, people and words. Much of their information work is devoted to probing and learning new subject areas and they often rely on intermediaries to help collect and translate materials from unfamiliar subjects. Libraries that wish to facilitate cross disciplinary enquiry will need to design information environments that support learning, provide tools that function as 'boundary objects' and offer intermediary services that assist in the transfer and translation of information across scientific communities
