Im Gegensatz zur früher üblichen Praxis, Informationsverhalten auf die Aktivitäten der Informationssuche zu beschränken, folgt man heute Tom Wilsons Definition, wonach es sich dabei um "the totality of human behaviour in relation to sources and channels of information, including both active and passive information-seeking, and information use" handelt, bzw. jener von Karen Pettigrew [nunmehr Fisher] et al., "how people need, seek, give and use information in different contexts".

    Abstract
This article marries the study of serious leisure pursuits with library and information science's (LIS) interest in people's everyday use, need, seeking, and sharing of information. Using a qualitative approach, the role of information as a phenomenon was examined in relation to the leisure activity of hobbyist collecting. In the process, a model and a typology for these collectors were developed. We find that the information needs and information seeking of hobbyist collectors is best represented as an interrelationship between information and object needs, information sources, and interactions between collectors and their publics. Our model of the role of information in a particular domain of hobbyist collecting moves away from the idea of one individual seeking information from formal systems and shifts towards a model that takes seriously the social milieu of a community. This collecting community represents a layer of a social system with complex interactions and specialized information needs that vary across collector types. Only the serious collectors habitually engage in information seeking and, occasionally, in information dissemination, in the traditional sense, yet information flows through the community and serves as a critical resource for sustaining individual and communal collecting activities.

    Abstract
Large amounts of health-related information of different types are available on the web. In addition to authoritative health information sites maintained by government health departments and healthcare institutions, there are many social media sites carrying user-contributed information. This study sought to identify the types of drug information available on consumer-contributed drug review sites when compared with authoritative drug information websites. Content analysis was performed on the information available for nine drugs on three authoritative sites (RxList, eMC, and PDRhealth) as well as three drug review sites (WebMD, RateADrug, and PatientsLikeMe). The types of information found on authoritative sites but rarely on drug review sites include pharmacology, special population considerations, contraindications, and drug interactions. Types of information found only on drug review sites include drug efficacy, drug resistance experienced by long-term users, cost of drug in relation to insurance coverage, availability of generic forms, comparison with other similar drugs and with other versions of the drug, difficulty in using the drug, and advice on coping with side effects. Drug efficacy ratings by users were found to be different across the three sites. Side effects were vividly described in context, with user assessment of severity based on discomfort and effect on their lives.

    Abstract

    Abstract
A 1996 survey of the 18 LIBRAS consortium libraries to find out to what degree they have achieved a synthesis between reference and bibliographic instruction. The surveyed libraries were asked 2 main items of information: a statement of philosophy on reference service and a statement of philosophy on bibliographic instruction. 11 out of 18 surveys were returned. The results indicated 2 extremes: 1. the 'teaching library,' which subsumes both services under a single philosophy and 2. the library that claims not to have any philosophies. The rest fall somewhere in between. The survey results reinforce the original belief by the researchers that philosophy statements pose problems in their construction and in their relation to day-to-day realities

    Abstract
Discusses underlying concepts related to value that must be clarified in order to proceed with any pragmatic study of value, and establishes a theory of use-oriented value of information and information services. Examines the notion of value in philosophy and economics and in relation to library and information services as well as the connection between value and relevance. Develops 2 models: one related to use of information and the other to use of library and information services. They are a theoretical framework for pragmatic study of value and a guide for the development of a Derived Taxonomy of Value in Using Library and Information Services

    Abstract
GINN has been a two year project investigating school Governors' INformation Needs, undertaking an in-depth assessment of information needed and used by school governors as seen from the individual governor's point of view. It investigated the nature of information flow within school governing bodies and sought to establish the role of information and nature of information needed in relation to the effective functioning of the school governing body. There are over 350,000 school governors in the state supported sector of education in England and Wales, members of governing bodies having corporate responsibility for overseeing the management of schools. Layder's research map with "self' at the heart of and part of "situation", "setting" and "context" provides a framework for the initial identification of the interrelated environmental factors, both at the macro and rnicro levels.
