- Abstract
- Die vorliegende Arbeit kritisiert den kürzlich veröffentlichten Entwurf eines Ethik-Kodex für Informationsvermittler unter verschiedenen Gesichtspunkten. Einmal das Verfahren: Die Gültigkeit eines Ethik-Kodex setzt einen Konsens voraus, der mittels eines diskursiven Verfahrens (Entwicklung, Diskussion, Überarbeitung, Verabschiedung) erzielt wurden. Für den Fall von Regelverletzungen müssen hierbei Sanktionen vorgesehen sein. Zum zweiten der Inhalt: Der vorliegende Entwurf verkürzt die ethische Gesamtproblematik auf den ökonomischen Aspekt und enthält darüber hinaus eine Fülle von Unklarheiten, Fehlern und Schludrigkeiten. Die Verfasser fordern fordern einen gedanklichen und verfahrensmäßigen Neuanfang, der sich etwa am Vorgehen der deutschen Soziologen orientieren könnte; dieses Verfahren wird beispielhaft in ausführlicher Weise beschrieben

- Abstract
- Taking the Oklahoma bombing as a base, the author argues that although social scientists differ about the effects of pornography, there are no parallel arguments that bomb manuals on the Internet give safe vent to potential bombers. While instructions for making bombs are available in books, the procedures involved in accessing such literature in libraries may deter would be bombers. In contrast, easy access through the Internet will encourage them. It is argued that materials that endanger lives should be banned from the Internet on the basis that every right, even free speech, needs to be balanced with others, especially the right to live

- Abstract
- The issue of whether or not a librarian should attempt to answer all requests for information, regardless of the use to which the information may be put, is a vexed one. This paper discusses the issue in the context of expert systems in reference work, and suggests that the need for the reference librarian to use discretion has implications for expert system development. It examines the role of the reference librarian, discusses the cases for and against answering all requests for information, outlines the behaviour of expert systems in reference, and discusses possible problems and solutions
