- Der neue Herausgeber des Brockhaus, ein Tochterverlag von Bertelsmann, hat unterdessen angekündigt, zum gedruckten Lexikon zurückzukehren. Etwa Anfang 2015 soll die 22. Auflage erscheinen. In Zeiten des virtuellen Informationsoverkills gebe es einen Bedarf an Orientierung, an Relevanzvorgaben, sagt Geschäftsführer Christoph Hünermann. Ausgerechnet Bertelsmann druckte 2008 ein knapp 1 000 Seiten langes Wikipedia-Lexikon mit den 50 000 meist gesuchten Begriffen. Eine Experten-Redaktion überprüfte die Einträge sicherheitshalber zuvor - soll allerdings kaum Fehler gefunden haben."

- Die Druckausgabe war teuer Die Wikipedia ist ein kostenloses Online-Lexikon, an dem jeder als Autor mitwirken kann. Die Plattform wurde 2001 gegründet. Sie existiert in 280 Sprachen. Die englische Version enthält fast vier Millionen Artikel, die deutsche etwa 1,4 Millionen. Weltweit haben sich schon weit über eine Million Nutzer beteiligt. Der Brockhaus galt lange Zeit als das wichtigste deutsche Nachschlagewerk. 1796 erschien ein Vorläufer der ersten Auflage. 2008 wurde entschieden, die rund 2800 Euro teure Druckausgabe einzustellen. Die Nachfrage war zu stark eingebrochen. Spätestens 2015 soll es nun doch ein Comeback geben. Die Encyclopaedia Britannica gilt als Produkt der schottischen Aufklärung. Ihre aktuelle Auflage kostet rund 1500 Euro. Zuletzt wurden nur noch 8000 Exemplare verkauft. 1990 waren es noch 120.000. Die Encyclopaedia wird es künftig nur noch online geben, zu einem Abo-Preis von 70 Euro pro Jahr. Zu den Themen, die die Wikipedianer in Berlin diskutieren, gehört vor allem die noch sehr einseitige demografische Durchmischung der Autoren. Vor allem Frauen sind mit einem Anteil von nur neun Prozent stark unterrepräsentiert - weltweit. Laut Pavel Richter ist der typische Autor männlich, gut gebildet und zwischen 20 und 30 Jahren alt. "Wir haben uns für dieses Jahr vorgenommen, zu untersuchen woran es liegt, dass Frauen sich kaum beteiligen", sagt er. Eine erste Vermutung sei die stark männlich geprägte Diskussionskultur. Auch Senioren und Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund gibt es unter den Autoren kaum. Die Wikimedia Foundation plant deshalb Projekte zum Beispiel in Seniorenbildungseinrichtungen.

- "Der Werbeprospekt tönte bombastisch: "Das Werk, das wir ankündigen, ist nicht mehr ein nur in Vorbereitung befindliches Werk. Das Manuskript und die Zeichnungen dazu sind fertig." Am 24. Juni 1751 erhielt der erste Textband das königliche Druckprivileg und war bereits vier Tage später auf dem Markt. Der Prospekt versprach ferner, bis 1754 acht Text- und zwei Bildbände zu liefern. Der Initiator des großspurig angekündigten Projekts war Denis Diderot, und das Werk trägt den Titel: Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire Raisonné des Sciences, des Arts et des Métiers, Recueilli des Meilleurs Auteurs (Enzyklopädie oder auf Vernunfterkenntnis gegründetes Lexikon der Wissenschaften, der Künste und der Gewerbe, gesammelt von den besten Autoren). Fünfundzwanzig Jahre später - 1776 - war das 1750 angeblich "fertige" Werk wirklich fertig und umfasste 17 Text-, 11 Bild-, 4 Ergänzungs- und 2 Registerbände - insgesamt 72 000 Artikel und 2800 Kupferstiche in 35 Bänden im Foli-Format mit durchschnittlich 1000 Seiten Umfang. Angefangen hat alles 1745 mit dem Vorhaben, Ephraim Chambers' zweibändige Cyclopaedia or Universal Dictionary of Arts and Sciences (1728) ins Französische zu übersetzten. Der Verleger und Drucker André Francois Le Breton erwarb zwar ein Druckprivileg, konnte aber die Finanzierung nicht garantieren.
Das Projekt gewann erst an Konturen, als Le Breton drei weitere Pariser Verleger für das Geschäft interessieren konnte. Als Herausgeber engagierten die vier Verleger 1746 Abbé Jean-Paul Gua de Malves, als Übersetzter Denis Diderot (1713-1784) und Jean Le Rond D'Alembert (1717-1783), einen glänzenden Astronomen und Mathematiker. Bevor die Arbeiten anfingen, zerstritten sich die Verleger mit Gua de Malves. Nun sollten Diderot und D'Alembert Herausgeber und Übersetzer werden. Das scheiterte zunächst daran, dass Diderot am 22. Juli 1749 nach einem berüchtigten Geheimbefehl ("lettre de cachet") verhaftet und in Vincennes inhaftiert wurde. Man hielt ihn - zu Recht, aber unbeweisbar - für den Verfasser der 1745 in Amsterdam anonym gedruckten Philosophischen Gedanken und traute ihm auch die schlüpfrigen Geschichten unter dem Titel Die indiskreten Kleinode (1748) zu. Während der Haft intervenierten die Verleger beim Kanzler d'Aguesseau. Dieser wie auch der Justizminister d'Argenson sahen in der Encyclopédie der philosophes" ein Projekt zum Ruhme Frankreichs und zur Schande Englands". Nach 103 Tagen kam Diderot wieder frei. Teile des Hofes und der Klerus beobachteten das Unternehmen Encyclopédie von Anfang an mit Misstrauen. Die Jesuiten vom Journal de Trévoux entdeckten im ersten Band ein Defizit: Es fehlten die Namen von Königen, Gelehrten, Heiligen", während viele heidnische Gottheiten" vorkamen. Sie machten die philosophes" unter dem erfundenen Wort eacouacs" zum Gespött. Noch 1952 charakterisierte die katholische Zeitschrift Études die Encyclopédie als die fürchterlichste Maschine, die jemals gegen die Religion in Stellung gebracht" wurde. Nachdem Abbé Jean-Martin de Prades - Autor des Artikels Gewissheit - in seiner Dissertation die These vertreten hatte, die Heilungen durch Jesus Christus glichen methodisch jenen des griechischen Arztes Äskulap, brach ein Sturm der Entrüstung aus. De Prades musste fliehen. Klerikale Einflüsterungen erreichten, dass der Staatsrat am 7. Februar 1752 gegen die ersten beiden Bände der Encyclopédie eine "scharfe Missbilligung" aussprach. Das war ein faktisches Verkaufsverbot, aber keine Rücknahme des Druckprivilegs. Man konnte nicht nur weiterarbeiten, sondern die Regierung bat die Herausgeber direkt weiterzumachen auch zum Schutz der Eigentumstitel der Subskribenten. Allerdings sollten künftig drei theologisch gebildete Zensoren jeden Artikel abzeichnen. Eingefädelt hatte das alles, wie Arthur M. Wilson, der beste Diderot-Kenner, gezeigt hat, Chrétien Guillaume de Malesherbes. Malesherbes war der Chef des Buchwesens und der Zensurbehörde - zugleich Freund und Förder der Encyclopédie.
