    Abstract
Reports results of the work of a new member of the ELINOR project team to review the development taking place in Z39.50 networked information retrieval protocol with a view to bringing the University's electronic library pilot systems, including ELINOR and the online catalogue into a single, unified system. Focuses particularly on the WWW client server environment

    Abstract
Briefly follows the debate concerning: the relationship between traditional library OPACs and the WWW; possible replacement of USMARC format with SGML; and the possible demise of OPACs that do not migrate to the WWW. Discusses the approach taken by the Text encoding Initative (TEI) in their use of a mandatory TEI header in their standard SGML application as the first since CIP to explore attaching bibliographic information to the item itself to assist cataloguing

    Abstract
The Venice University Institute of Architecture has developed Easyweb, a software package to integrate its heterogeneous non-compatible bibliographic and multimedia databases, standardise access and create internal links, by transferring all existing OPAC applications to the Web. Features include importation of UNIMARC data, multiple window searching, multibase searching and special applications, e.g. circulation management. Easyweb is notable user friendly and has become the point of reference for OPACs in Italy

    Abstract
Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic has been providing audio recordings of educational texts since 1948. In 1992, it initiated a project to develop an OPAC to allow institutional providers and individual borrowers to search its holdings of over 80.000 volumes. In 1993, a coordinated pilot project was begun to allow a limited test group of institutional sites and individuals the ability to use the catalogue ordering mechanism for document delivery. Describes the project concluding that, although the project was not considered a success, much insight was gained as a result of the efforts which will be of value in the development of an improved version of the OPAC

    Abstract
Reports a survey conducted in April 1997 of 136 Japanese WWW and Telnet OPACs from the persepctive of their functions and user interfaces. These included: types of searchable files; access points; kinds of displays; login commands; search methods; Boolean operation; help functions; search history; and browsing of indexed terms. Results indicate a sharp rise in the number of WWW OPACs and problems with the provision of functions and user interfaces by Japanese WWW OPACs

    Abstract
Reports briefly on the development, by the Consortium of University Research Libraries (CURL) of the CURL OPAC, or COPAC. COPAC is seen as the partial realization of the aims of earlier projects, such as the UK Libraries Database System (UKLDS). Although COPAC was not designed as a union catalogue, it was a natural next step for CURL to obtain funding from the Joint Information Services Committee (JISC), following the Follett Report, to use the database to create a union catalogue. The work is being undertaken at Manchester University, which has held the CURL database since its creation, and the version was launched on 30 Apr 96

    Abstract
To access a remote catalogue the searcher can use the Z39.50 standard as interface, which requires appropriate software; or for databases accessible on the WWW use a common gateway interface. The multibase access advantage of Z39.50 can also be obtained through a Web navigator by inserting a Web server/Z39.50 client software connector: this can be located either on the search site, in an intermediary position or on the database site, so determining the range of databases which can be searched. Z39.50 also offers interesting possibilities for joint and local cataloguing: multibase searching can equally be realised on intranets

    Abstract
Since Sep 1997 the catalogue of the French National Museum of Modern Art's documentation collection has been on the Internet. The original intention was to expand its function as a local collection management tool, and provide a worldwide reference source, using Z39.50. The process highlighted the catalogue's imperfection (local variations, exploded records). Future developments include an English version, refinement of the home pages and an updating programme. So far the impact is unclear, but this should eventually provide a basis for international cooperation

    Abstract
Presents a brief description of the operation of COPAC, the new OPAC providing a unified interface to the consolidated database and online catalogues of the UK's Consortium of University Research Libraries (CURL). COPAC is seen as the partial realization of the aims of earlier projects, such as the UK Libraries Database System (UKLDS). Provides a brief overview of the background to the CURL OPAC and the COPAC project, describing the main content of the COPAC database. Considers the effect of having multiple contributors to the database and the inevitable need for deduplication and record consolidation to cope with the inevitable record duplication. COPAC is accessible via a text interface and a WWW interface. Discusses each interface using example screens to illustrate the search process
