- Ovid has supported a sophisticated interface for searching bibliographic and full text databases for some time. It is now offering a Web based version of this interface that is capable of accessing Z39.50-compliant OPACs and databases anywhere in the world. The Ovid Web Gateway builds on the Ovid Server, thus allowing for a variety of functions and configurations at user, group and database-specific level. - Abstract
- Zunächst werden neun unterschiedliche Umgebungen bzw. Kontexte von Webseiten eingeführt. Jeder Kontext soll die Orientierung und Navigation bezüglich eines bestimmten Aspekts ermöglichen. Der Linkkontext einer bestimmten Webseite besteht beispielsweise aus den Webseiten und Links, die von dieser Seite aus über eine definierte Anzahl von Links erreichbar sind. Die Darstellung dieses Kontexts soll die Orientierung und Navigation unter dem Aspekt der Links, des assoziativen Umfelds dieser Seite verbessern. Die Aspekte, unter denen die Kontexte die WWW-Benutzung verbessern sollen, betreffen entweder die Struktur, die Benutzung oder den Inhalt der Webseiten. Damit die Kontexte die gewünschte Wirkung erzielen können, muß ein Benutzer sie wahrnehmen können. Dazu wird eine neue Visualisierungstechnik vorgestellt: das Verfahren der BrowsingIcons und BrowsingGraphs. Während der Navigation im WWW entstehen wiedererkennbare, visuelle Zeichen für einzelne Sessions (Benutzersitzungen). Man kann schnell erkennen, wo man sich gerade innerhalb des jeweiligen Kontexts befindet (Orientierung). Ferner kann man direkt über mehrere Links hinweg einzelne Webseiten ansteuern (Navigation). Frühere Sitzungen können an der charakteristischen Form der BrowsingIcons erkannt werden. Die Metapher biologischer Kulturen wird auf BrowsingGraphs übertragen. Durch "Impfen" von "Nährlösungen" können Suchanfragen intuitiv gestellt werden. Die Ergebnisse kann man später "ernten"

- Abstract
- Die meisten Web-Auftritte der Hosts waren bisher für den Retrieval-Laien gedacht. Im Hintergrund steht dabei das Ziel: mehr Nutzung durch einfacheres Retrieval. Dieser Ansatz steht aber im Konflikt mit der wachsenden Datenmenge und Dokumentgröße, die eigentlich ein immer ausgefeilteres Retrieval verlangen. Häufig wird von Information Professionals die Kritik geäußert, dass die Webanwendungen einen Verlust an Relevanz bringen. - Reports a survey conducted in April 1997 of 136 Japanese WWW and Telnet OPACs from the persepctive of their functions and user interfaces. These included: types of searchable files; access points; kinds of displays; login commands; search methods; Boolean operation; help functions; search history; and browsing of indexed terms. - Describes a WWW based system which allows users to view, search and post geographically indexed information of the Earth. 2 geographic browsers have been developed: a 2D map browser capable of continuous scroll and zoom of an arbitrarily large sheet and a 3D flight-simulator browser capable of continuous flight around the Earth. On the server side, a geographical and geometrical server has been developed which contains large databases of images, elevations, lines, points and polygons stored in tiles structured into hierarchical pyramids or quadtrees. A metadata server has also been developed which contains URL pointers and geographical coordinates of various WWW documents, geographical information and geometrical models

- Abstract
- 3 user interfaces to LIBIS, a library catalogue accessible via the Internet, were evaluated for use by people who are motor impaired, to identify how interface design influences the motor actions necessary to operate the system. Results confirm that minimizing the motor actions necessary for interaction with the interfaces is needed for this group and recommends improving consistency in design, optimizing instinctive awareness of how to use the system and providing informative feedback and instructive messages on how to progress. these recommendations will be validated through iterative adaptation and testing of the user interface, while designing a prototype library service

- Abstract
- In einer empirischen Usability-Untersuchung wird die mittlere Güte der Navigationssysteme deutschsprachiger Websites im E-Commerce (Otto, Quelle, Amazon, eBay) sowie von informativen Websites (HWWA, Landtag NRW, Europäische Union, Kartoo) erfasst. Eingesetzt werden die Methoden des aufgabenbezogenen Nutzertests und der heuristischen Evaluation.

- ""Kein Grundstück der Welt ist so wertvoll wie eine Homepage", denn diese ist "zugleich das Gesicht, das ein Unternehmen der Welt zeigt" (Nielsen 1999). Die Homepage ist die erste Möglichkeit, die ein potenzieller Kunde oder gewünschter Lieferant wahrnimmt, um sich ein Bild über ein Unternehmen zu verschaffen "ehe sie sich auf ein Geschäft einlassen" (ebd.). Hier wird der Grundstein für zukünftige Geschäfte gelegt, unabhängig davon ob dies "nun online geschieht oder in der realen Welt" (ebd.). Die Website stellt demnach die erste Verbindung zu unterschiedlichsten Interessenten, Kunden und Lieferanten dar, wird somit zu einem Kommunikations- und Werbemedium. Deshalb ist es umso wichtiger, dass sich Benutzer auf sämtlichen Seiten einer Homepage zurecht finden, diese imstande ist, "die Bedürfnisse der Benutzer zu erfüllen" (ebd.), dass sie benutzerfähig und benutzerfreundlich ist. Diese Arbeit analysiert die Usability, d. h. die Benutzerfreundlichkeit und die Benutzbarkeit der deutschsprachigen Webauftritte der nachfolgenden Unternehmen bzw. Institutionen (nach Themenbereichen gegliedert), nicht nach künstlerischen, sondern nach funktionalen Kriterien: - Kataloge im E-Commerce: Otto (www.otto.de); Quelle (www.quelle.de); Amazon (www.amazon.de); eBay (www.eBay.de) - Informative Websites: HWWA (www.hwwa.de); Landtag NRW (www.landtag.nrw.de); Europäische Union (europa.eu.int); Kartoo Metasuchmaschine (www.kartoo.com). Von den unterschiedlichen Zielen der diversen Websites ausgehend wird untersucht, ob sich der alltägliche Web-Surfer, nachfolgend als "Otto Normalsurfer" gekennzeichnet, auf den einzelnen Webseiten zurecht findet, ob sein Informationsbedarf gedeckt und das Bedürfnis, sowohl nach allgemeiner als auch spezifischer Information befriedigt werden kann. Es geht demnach konkret um die Web-Zufriedenheit der Surfer, Mängel der Websites bezüglich Benutzerfreundlichkeit, des Designs und fehlende "Corporate Identity" aufzuzeigen und somit die Web-Usability der Websites zu vergleichen. Insbesondere das vergleichende Vorgehen im Anschluss an aufgabenbezogene Nutzertests sind wissenschaftliches Neuland."

- Abstract
- Describes a novel visual user interface, WebIFQ (Web-In-Frame-Query), to assist users in specifying queries and visualising query criteria including document metadata, strucutres, and linkage information. WebIFQ automatically generates corresponding query statements for WebDB. As a result, users are not required to be aware of underlying complex schema design and language syntax. WebDB supports automated query relaxation to include additional terms related by semantic or co-occurence relationship. WebIFQ can facilitate users to reformulate queries perpetually in an interactive mode

- Abstract
- The growth of medical, academic resources on the World Wide Web has led to much greater incentives and opportunities for nursing and medical students, researchers and practitioners to access Web resources. However, usersindividual differences and the variety of information-retrieval mechanisms provided by medical web resources may combine to reduce the benefits of this information resource. In a study designed to qualitatively analyse the interaction of such individual- and system-differences, a reliable method of representing WWW navigational data was found to be important in assisting traditional methodologies of representation and analysis. The methodology of graphically representing such navigational data, and the support such a technique may offer the qualitative analysis of user-system interactions, is thus described in detail and with reference to one specific example drawn from the data collected. Further, some preliminary findings deriving from the use of graphical and more traditional methodologies in this study are also represented

- Abstract
- This paper presents a novel user interface that provides global visualizations of large document sets in order to help users to formulate the query that corresponds to their information needs and to access the corresponding documents. An important element of the approach we introduce is the use of concept hierarchies (CHs) in order to structure the document collection. Each CH corresponds to a facet of the documents users can be interested in. Users browse these CHs in order to specify and refine their information needs. Additionally the interface is based an OLAP principles and multidimensional analysis operators are provided to users in order to allow them to explore a document collection.
