    Abstract
This article explores the reasons why librarians should be at the heart of Internet site development. There are two distinct ways in which librarians can most effectively contribute to this medium. The first is by getting involved in information architecture. This new discipline requires skills such as expertise in search techniques and navigational logic, and generally involves the librarian working closely with graphic designers to create a firm foundation for the site. The second area is the role librarians can play in the structuring of the data which drives the site (data management).

    Abstract
Explores techniques for integrating the WWW into day-today reference services. Identifies categories of queries that are likely to be answered more easily using the WWW. Explains how and when to use search tools. Stresses the importance of search statement format or syntax when using search tools. Traditional reference evaluation criteria should be used when deciding between print and online versions or ready reference materials. Bookmarking should be used to develop reference and subject specialist pages. Electronic collection development strategies should be developed

    Abstract
Discusses the likely future for libraries in an environment of increasing availability of information in electronic form via networks, particularly the Internet. The concept of the library will survive and thrive, but that the library as a place is an endangered species, and that librarians are facing the greatest challenge in a century

    Abstract
Articles on the Internet and its application to library services now abound in the professional literature. Libraries which do not offer Internet access are depriving their users of access to a vast store of information. As the cost of scientific journals continues to soar the Internet has encouraged the creation of specialist databases, such as the elementary particle physics database at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Publishers charges for online information highlight the vulnerable position of Flemish university libraries

    Abstract
Citation analysis has long been used by librarians as an important tool of collection development and the advent of Internet technology and especially the WWW adds a new facet to the role played by citation analysis. One of the reasons why librarians create WWW homepages is to provide users with further sources of interest or reference and to do this libraries include links from their own homepages to other information sources. Reports current research on the analysis of WWW pages as an introduction to an examination of the homepages of 25 art libraries to determine what sites are most often included. The types of linked sites are analyzed based on 3 criteria: location, focus and evidence that the link was evaluated before the connection was establisheds

    Abstract
Using the Internet can be an intimidating and frustrating experience, especially for beginners. Yet librarians, many of whom are novices, are increasingly asked to take on active roles in making the Internet a more usable information resource for their communities. What can librarians do to improve the value of the Internet and its information? In this article, Rosenfeld describes the concept of adding value to the Internet's information through repackaging its existing resources. To date, most of the attempts to make the Internet's information more usable focus on the tangible efforts of nonlibrarians: improved retrieval technologies and better-designed user interfaces. However, the intellectual effort of value-added repackaging may be of even greater importance to maling the Internet a valuable information environment. This article describes two successful examples: the creation of subject-oriented guides to the Internet's resources and the creation of a clearinghouse for such guides

    Abstract
Proposes that librarians use their traditional skills developed for reviewing the quality and value of print materials in the new environment of the WWW to evaluate web sites. Notes the work of the Infofilter project (http://www.kcpl.lib.mo.us/infofilter.htm) which has been attempting to do this. Argues that the current 'web reviewing' sources are of little value, and do not adhere to standards of quality. Discusses characteristics of the Web which make it quite different from print materials, especially the interactivity and collaboration which it promotes, and gives examples of these

    Abstract
Stresses the need for sites evaluating Internet resources. Lists sites and outlines how they are evaluated. Librarians need to collaborate more, and reviews need to become more consistent and informative for the user. Describes the model followed by the Marr/Kirkwood Official Guide to Business Schools Web. This uses a tabular format and compares business school sites on a set of standard criteria. The format lends itself to multiple reviewers

    Abstract
Examines the effect of the information revolution on college and university libraries within the framework of the 3 interrelated concepts of transformation, reengineering and organizational behaviour. Advances in technology, specifically through the Internet, have had a major impact on how information is perceived and obtained and, consequently, the role of the academic librarian is evolving and expanding. Discusses 4 areas which must be addressed by academic librarians in the transition toward a reformed environment; strategic planning; educational aspects of the Internet; policy development; and management of electronic data. The library is a critical partner on academic campuses as an instigator and initiator of information literacy and a key player in accessing through networks that which is relevant

    Abstract
Online library catalogues and other information resources accessible through network connections offer students and scholars a variety of useful data, but present special problems to remote users. Issues facing the user of Internet-accessible systems include: knowing how to reach a system; finding out what a system contains; mastering commands and menu structures; using appropriate kinds of search terms; and choosing among systems to meet information needs effectively. These issues should be addressed by bibliographic instruction librarians and others who develop instructional units for access to systems on the Internet

    Abstract
The web has brought to the business world an inexpensive way of distributing corporate information to employees, business partners and customers. The term intranet describes a closed computer network built upon World Wide Web technology in which access is restricted to a particular group of users, typically employees of a company. The term extranet is used when access is extended to a privileged user group: customers and suppliers for example. This paper examines the role of the World Wide Web in the Research Library at Scottish Media Newspapers, in particular how it complements the portfolio of traditional online sources, CD Roms and books. It also describes the extent to which searching has moved from the intermediary to the end user. In the mid 1990s, just as the web was beginning its spectacular rise to fame, Scottish Media Newspapers developed a browser-based interface to the in-house database of newspaper stories, a process that led to the creation of a corporate intranet. The creation of the intranet has been accompanied by a redefining of staff roles in an attempt to change the image from passive librarian to dynamic research specialist. The paper concludes by examining the role of the information professional/librarian in a world where end users will have a vast range of information from internal and external sources at their fingertips.

    Abstract
Reports on the Southern California Online Users Group annual workshop, which broke all previous attendance records. The topic was 'Radical redesign of reference and research', and common threads among speakers included the need for a new reference/research model that will scale with future needs, and the now common standard of round the clock service availability. Print could become a secondary medium to digital data, primarily delivered over the Internet, and that information vendors be forced to change pricing structures. Librarians from public, corporate, and academic sectors have begun building Web sites around links to their own data and to other quality sites as a means of providing 24 hour services. Vendors might consider creating new price comparison services, or offering proce guarantees, to compete with this new phenomenon

    Abstract
JANET supports electronic communication, access to OPACs and access to fee-based information services, maintaining services and resources targeted specifically at librarians. Focuses on one such service, the Bulletin Board for Libraries (BUBL), and the professional development resources it provides for librarians involved with electronic networking. These include current awareness services, full texts of publications related to networking, training materials, and other resources relevant to libraries and the networked world
