- Abstract
- Anlässlich eines Seminars über Web Usability erhielten Studierende des Fachbereichs Bibliothek und Information (HAW Hamburg) Gelegenheit, sich als Usability-Experten zu erproben. Als Ergebnis lagen im Sommer 2001 Usability-Berichte für 22 Bibliothekswebsites vor. Einige der Auftraggeber waren in der Lage, die Empfehlungen der Studierenden anlässlich eines Redesigns ihrer Website unmittelbar umzusetzen. Im Folgenden werden häufige und gravierende Befunde aus den Usability-Berichten zusammengefasst' und jeweils anschließend Empfehlungen angeboten.

- Abstract
- The Venice University Institute of Architecture has developed Easyweb, a software package to integrate its heterogeneous non-compatible bibliographic and multimedia databases, standardise access and create internal links, by transferring all existing OPAC applications to the Web. Features include importation of UNIMARC data, multiple window searching, multibase searching and special applications, e.g. circulation management. Easyweb is notable user friendly and has become the point of reference for OPACs in Italy

- ILEKS (Internet-Lektoratsservice) als Nachnutzung des BINE-Projekts läuft derzeit als Initiative der Stadtbibliotheken in Bremen, Berlin, Paderborn und Hannover sowie der Büchereizentrale Schleswig-Holstein und der Landesfachstelle für Öffentliche Bibliotheken an der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek. Die Konsortialpartner wählen zu den Themenbereichen "Reisen", "Krebs", "Computer", "Computerspiele", "Kriminalliteratur", "Musik" sowie "Berlin" und "Bremen" Internetquellen aus, bewerten und erschließen sie. Um diesen Dienstleistungsservice thematisch zu erweitern, muss die Beteiligung auf eine breitere Basis gestellt werden. Dazu gibt es eine Initiative des dbv, die mit externer Finanzierung durch zwei private Partner, der Bertelsmann-Stiftung und der SISIS GmbH, ein weiterführendes Projekt "Internetbibliothek. de" ins Leben gerufen hat. Das Konzept ILEKS und die bis dato gemachten Erfahrungen sind ein wichtiger Meilen- und Baustein der Online-Distribution neuer Servicedienstleistungen der Öffentlichen Bibliotheken für Wissen und Information!

- Abstract
- The nature and implications of electrocopying are summarised. After a brief review of the principles of copyright, the issue of whether electrocopying infringes copyright is debated. Publishers are aware of the threat that electrocopying poses to their business. The various options available to publishers for responding to electrocopying are summarised. Patterns of scholarly communications and the relationships between authors, publishers and libraries are being challenged. Constructive dialogue is necessary if the issues are to be resolved

- Abstract
- Internet based electronic resources are growing dramatically but there have been no empirical studies evaluating the impact of e-sources, as a whole, on formal scholarly communication. reports results of an investigation into how much e-sources have been used in formal scholarly communication, using a case study in the area of Library and Information Science (LIS) during the period 1994 to 1996. 4 citation based indicators were used in the study of the impact measurement. Concludes that, compared with the impact of print sources, the impact of e-sources on formal scholarly communication in LIS is small, as measured by e-sources cited, and does not increase significantly by year even though there is observable growth of these impact across the years. It is found that periodical format is related to the rate of citing e-sources, articles are more likely to cite e-sources than are print priodical articles. However, once authors cite electronic resource, there is no significant difference in the number of references per article by periodical format or by year. Suggests that, at this stage, citing e-sources may depend on authors rather than the periodical format in which authors choose to publish

- Abstract
- Web accessibility (WA) is an innovation in Web design; it can be considered as part of the corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategy of the firms. As adoption of innovations and CSR commitment are linked with firm size and national culture/legislation, we hypothesize that size and national culture/legislation, may have an effect on WA level. The authors studied an international sample made up of companies included in EUROSTOXX600 (The STOXX Europe 600 Index). The main results suggest that both size and culture have a significant effect on WA. Large firms as well as Anglo-Saxon companies are more prone to have higher WA levels. A deeper analysis, which was done through the estimation of quantile regression equations, showed that the influence of size is significant for companies trying to excel or for those trying to avoid the worst WA. However, the effect of size is significant only in the lowest part of the conditional distribution.

- Richer graph models permit authors to 'program' the browsing behaviour they want WWW readers to see by turning the hypertext into a hyperprogram with specific semantics.
