- Abstract
- Im Dezember 2003 fand in Genf die erste Phase des UN-Weltgipfels zur Informationsgesellschaft (WSIS) statt. Die Gipfelkonferenz, an der mehr als 11.000 Vertreter von Regierungen, der privaten Wirtschaft und der Zivilgesellschaft teilnahmen, verhandelte u. a. Themen wie die Überwindung der digitalen Spaltung, Menschenrechte im Informationszeitalter, geistige Eigentumsrechte, Cyberkriminalität und Internet Governance. Das vorliegende Buch stellt den WSIS-Gipfel in den historischen Kontext 200-jähriger internationaler Verhandlungen zur Regulierung grenzüberschreitender Kommunikation -- von den Karlsbader Verträgen 1819 bis zur Entstehung des Internets. Es beschreibt die spannenden und kontroversen Auseinandersetzungen darüber, wie das Internet reguliert, Menschenrechte im Informationszeitalter garantiert, Sicherheit im Cyberspace gewährleistet, geistiges Eigentum geschützt und die digitale Spaltung überbrückt werden soll. Kleinwächter lässt keinen Zweifel daran, dass der WSIS-Kompromiss von Genf nicht mehr ist als der Beginn eines langen Prozesses zur Gestaltung der globalen Informationsgesellschaft der Zukunft. Die zweite Phase des Gipfeltreffens findet im November 2005 in Tunis statt. Das Buch enthält im Anhang die vom Gipfel verabschiedete Deklaration und den Aktionsplan sowie die von der Zivilgesellschaft angenommene Erklärung zur Zukunft der Informationsgesellschaft.

- Ob wir spazieren gehen, einkaufen oder uns unterhalten - ständig teilen wir die Lebewesen und Dinge, die uns umgeben, ein in verschiedene Kategorien: Bäume und Blumen, Milchprodukte und Gemüse, sympathische Menschen und unsympathische. So schaffen wir Ordnung und finden uns in der Welt zurecht wie in einer Bibliothek - alles hat seinen Platz. Diese Ordnung kommt ins Wanken, sagt David Weinberger. Unser Denken in festen Kategorien führt uns auf Dauer nicht weiter, wir müssen lernen, mit Chaos, Unordnung und Unschärfe umzugehen. Orientierungshilfen und Wegweiser gibt es also viele, sowohl online als auch über traditionellere Medien wie dem Buch. Auch das vorliegende Werk von Anna-Katharina Weilenmann ordnet sich in diese Kategorie von Internet-Führern ein. Auf rund 200 Seiten werden Einstiege in verschiedenste Themen der Wissenschaft angeboten. Die Bandbreite der Sachgebiete ist dementsprechend groß und orientiert sich an der Wissenschaft: - Bibliotheks- und Informationswissenschaft - Philosophie und Psychologie, Religion / Theologie - Sozialwissenschaften, Soziologie, Politik - Wirtschaft, Recht - Erziehung, Ethnologie, Sprache, Literaturwissenschaft - Mathematik, Physik, Chemie, Biologie - Technik - Medizin - Landwirtschaft, Informatik - Kunst, Architektur, Musik, Theater, Film - Sport - Geschichte Geographie, Reisen Bei der Auswahl der einzelnen Web-Quellen ließ sich die Autorin von Qualitätskriterien wie Alter der Webseite, der Zuverlässigkeit der Inhalte, der Aktualität aber auch von der Art der Trägerschaft leiten. Webseiten mit einem akademischen Hintergrund standen daher im Vordergrund, waren aber nicht ausschließlich vertreten. So finden sich auch Webseiten kommerzieller Anbieter (z.B. Scopus von Elsevier) oder auch anderer öffentlicher, nicht-akademischer Institutionen (wie der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek mit Ariadne) im Webseiten-Verzeichnis. Rund 200 deutsch- und englischsprachige Einträge werden im Buch genauer beschrieben, mit Informationen zum Inhalt des Angebots, der Urheberschaft und Angabe möglicher Kosten. Auch weiterführende Links werden häufig angeführt. Ein einführendes Kapitel zur Informationsrecherche rundet dieses gelungene Buch ab.
Empfehlung: Das Buch eignet sich meiner Meinung nach gut als Ausgangspunkt für die Recherche in einem noch unbekannten Sachgebiet. Zum einen, weil ein Sachgebiet von recht wenigen, dafür von der Autorin gut ausgesuchten Web-Quellen eingerahmt wird. Zum anderen, weil hier von vertrauenswürdigen Webseiten ausgegangen werden kann. Man kann es auch anders sagen: dieses Buch gehört möglichst nahe an jede InternetArbeitsstation. Aufgrund der Dynamik des Themas - Links und Webseiten können recht rasch "altern" - hat dieses Buch natürlich eine fast schon natürliche Lebensdauer. Hier wäre es interessant, und das ist weniger ein Hinweis an die Autorin als vielmehr ein Wink an den Verlag, die so detailreich beschriebenen Quellen auch online zugänglich zu machen, nämlich in der Form von Bookmarks, die von den Leserlnnen auf eigene Bookmarking-Tools übernommen werden könnten. Entweder ganz einfach als Favoriten im eigenen Browser oder zu elaborierten Werkzeugen wie Rollyo, wo individuelle Suchdienste basierend auf selbst erstellten Searchrolls bedient werden könnten. - Das Internet und besonders das Web 2.0 sind ein Segen für die Meinungsfreiheit, so heißt es: Endlich können alle bestimmen, worüber diskutiert wird - nicht nur wenige Experten, Top-Journalisten und wortgewaltige Autoren, die das Meinungsmonopol für sich beanspruchen. Doch was haben wir uns da eingehandelt? Forumsbeiträge, die vor Dummheit und falschen Fakten strotzen, und an Idiotie kaum zu überbietende Videoclips bei YouTube. Es kommt noch schlimmer: - Politische Splitterparteien und verschrobene Wirrköpfe maskieren sich immer häufiger als harmlose Blogger, um demokratiefeindliche Hetzkampagnen zu verbreiten. Betroffene können sich kaum dagegen wehren. - Unternehmen betreiben auf subtile Weise "virales Marketing", um ihre Produkte von vermeintlich begeisterten Kunden empfehlen zu lassen. - Clevere Lobbyisten mischen sich unter falscher Identität in Diskussionen ein, um ihre fragwürdigen Interessen durchzusetzen. Wir befinden uns auf einem gefährlichen Irrweg, sagt Andrew Keen: Wo Halbwissen und blanke Lügen herrschen statt verlässlicher Information, da fehlt auch die Basis für vernünftige und tragfähige politische Entscheidungen, da ist unsere Kultur in ihren Grundfesten erschüttert. Ein scharf formuliertes Plädoyer gegen die absurden Auswüchse der großen Verdummungsmaschine, die sich Internet nennt.

- Abstract
- Information und Wissen sind die Grundbausteine der Wissensgesellschaft. Die Art und Weise, wie der Umgang mit diesen Ressourcen organisiert wird, ist gegenwärtig die Kernfrage weltweiter gesellschaftlicher, politischer, kultureller und wirtschaftlicher Auseinandersetzungen. Die digitale Revolution und das Internet haben die Voraussetzungen Wissen zu kommunizieren, also zu verbreiten und mit anderen zu teilen, grundlegend verändert und vereinfacht. Sie haben einen ungeahnten Kreativitäts- und Innovationsschub ausgelöst, der weit reichende Auswirkungen auf unser Leben und unsere Kultur haben wird. Diese Entwicklung wollen Vertreter der Informationswirtschaft, die sich durch die "wunderbare Wissensvermehrung" bedroht fühlen, zurückdrehen. Der Kampf ums "geistige Eigentum" und um die Kontrolle des Internet - und seiner Fortentwicklung - sind momentan daher wichtige politische Arenen auf globaler Ebene. Dieses Buch ist ein Plädoyer für die Innovationsfreiheit. Die Beiträge beleuchten, welche kreativen und innovativen Kräfte dem "Geist" des Internet bisher entsprungen sind. Die entstandene Public Domain des Wissens gilt es auszubauen und allen Menschen zugänglich zu machen. Ideen für das Buch lieferte die Konferenz "Open Innovation - Auf der Suche nach neuen Leitbildern", welche die Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung mit TU und HU Berlin 2004 in Berlin veranstaltete.

- This is a practical guide to using web metrics to measure impact and demonstrate value. The web provides an opportunity to collect a host of different metrics, from those associated with social media accounts and websites to more traditional research outputs. This book is a clear guide for library and information professionals as to what web metrics are available and how to assess and use them to make informed decisions and demonstrate value. As individuals and organizations increasingly use the web in addition to traditional publishing avenues and formats, this book provides the tools to unlock web metrics and evaluate the impact of this content. - Abstract
- Für Webseiten ist, wie für alle interaktiven Anwendungen vom einfachen Automaten bis zur komplexen Software, die Benutzerfreundlichkeit von zentraler Bedeutung. Allerdings wird eine sinnvolle Benutzung von Informationsangeboten im World Wide Web häufig durch "cooles Design" unnötig erschwert, weil zentrale Punkte der Benutzerfreundlichkeit (Usability) vernachlässigt werden. Durch Usability Evaluation kann die Benutzerfreundlichkeit von Webseiten und damit auch die Akzeptanz bei den Benutzern verbessert werden. Ziel ist die Gestaltung von ansprechenden benutzerfreundlichen Webangeboten, die den Benutzern einen effektiven und effizienten Dialog ermöglichen. Das Buch bietet eine praxisorientierte Einführung in die Web Usability Evaluation und beschreibt die Anwendung ihrer verschiedenen Methoden.

- Abstract
- Mit der Deutschen Internetbibliothek soll einer breiten Öffentlichkeit ein allgemeines Themenportal im Netz zur Verfügung gestellt werden. Ähnlich wie das jüngst eröffnete Portal Vascoda als Dienstleistung der wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken und Informationseinrichtungen wird auch die Deutsche Internetbibliothek in Kooperation erstellt und gepflegt: Rund siebzig deutsche und österreichische Öffentliche Bibliotheken suchen nach relevanten Internetquellen, bewerten und rubrizieren einschlägige Angebote im Web - ein erstes Resümee nach fast einjährigem Betrieb des »Wissensportals der Bibliotheken«.
