    Abstract
Examines the use of networked information sources in scholarly communication. Networked information sources are defined broadly to cover: documents and images stored on electronic network hosts; data files; newsgroups; listservs; online information services and electronic periodicals. Reports results of a survey to determine how heavily, if at all, networked information sources are cited in scholarly printed periodicals published in 1993 and 1994. 27 printed periodicals, representing a wide range of subjects and the most influential periodicals in their fields, were identified through the Science Citation Index and Social Science Citation Index Journal Citation Reports. 97 articles were selected for further review and references, footnotes and bibliographies were checked for references to networked information sources. Only 2 articles were found to contain such references. Concludes that, although networked information sources facilitate scholars' work to a great extent during the research process, scholars have yet to incorporate such sources in the bibliographies of their published articles

    Abstract
Libraries can add value to Internet resources by adding them to the library's catalogue in a manner consistent with the other resources held within the collection. Reports on OCLC studies into cataloguing Internet resources and accessing electronic periodicals. Existing retrieval methods on the Internet are limited because of shallow directory structures and idiosyncratic naming conventions. Catalogue entries for electronic resources need to provide a complete description of the access methodology if they are to satisfactorily connect remote users without the immediate possibility of backup from reference staff

    Abstract
Assesses scholarly network periodicals from the reader's point of view. Reviews 7 subscription periodicals that are published primarily on the Internet with particular reference to: the nature of their contents, format, and policies. The review forms the basis of an assessment of the ease of use and usefulness of current network periodicals. While network periodicals present a number of problems, they have also begun to include features which offer readers an advantage over printed periodicals. Concludes with a brief discussion of requirements for future scholarly network periodicals

    Abstract
Reports results of a 1996 questionnaire survey, conducted among medical faculty members at the medical schools of Tel Aviv University, Ben Gurion University and the Technion, Haifa, to determine the extent of use of electronic periodicals compared with printed periodicals. Level of use of electronic periodicals was found to be very low, reading of these periodicals was infrequent and their use as a publishing medium was close to zero. Respondents were aware of some advantages of electronic periodicals but most doubted their value for academic promotion and consequently avoided using them for publishing. The low interest in reading electronic periodicals was attributed to: the small number of periodicals; lack of full recognition of their scientific value; sheer conservatism; inefficient search practices; and the inconvenience of reading from a computer screen. concludes with recommendations for improving the situation

    Abstract
An alternative publishing system for scholarly communication and information is emerging on international computer networks such as Internet and Bitnet. This is evident as a growing number of electronic periodicals (e-journals) provide scholarly articles, columns and reviews and have advantages over print publications, such as the speed of publication and dissemination. Electronic periodicals hold great promise, but technological problems and academic acceptance could limit their effectiveness. Some examples of electronic periodicals were investigated as well as the advantages and problems currently associated with this new source of information

The emerging importance of the Internet and WWW will not change the fundamental role of the periodicals publisher in the process of disseminating and adding value to scholarship and research but will have considerable impact on the way in which they actually function. Abstract
The number of physics and astronomy preprints (manuscripts intended for publication but circulated for peer comment prior to submission) available electronically has increased dramatically over the past 5 years and Internet accessible preprint Web servers at the Stanford Accelerator Laboratory (SLAC) and the Los Alamos National Laboratoty (LANL) provide unrestricted access to citations and full text of many of these papers long before they appear in print. Includes data for periodicals ranked by number of citations to preprints and electronic preprints (e-prints). Identifies the growing importance of e-prints in the published literature and addresses areas of concern regarding their future role in scientific communication, including: inclusion of e-prints in abstracting and indexing services; connecting electronic periodicals with e-prints; guidelines for withdrawal and revision of e-prints; and maintaining the integritiy of the e-print servers

    Abstract
The Medical Library Center of New York, a cooperative library agency for the health sciences, developed a programme to offer an electronic communications system (LIFENET) with access to the Internet for its members. Information on documentation and training as well as statistics on the subsequent use of the system and of the Internet are discussed. Specific examples of how medical librarians are using the systems include bibliographic verification, reference work, research on integrated library systems, production of duplicate periodicals lists, and professional activities such as electronic mail and discussion groups

    Abstract
Examines the needs of individual, isolated, humanities scholars regarding ease of access to humanities research via electronic networks, such as the Internet and electronic periodicals. Concludes that, implicit in the discussion is the suggestion of a need for a new type of information professional: the Internet intermediary and notes that some institutions are already employing 'network information officers' or 'knowledge navigators'

    Abstract
Over the past few years, instruction libarians have witnessed a dramatic change in the complexity and volume of the online resources they must teach to students, faculty and collegues. OPACs, WWW, Gopher, electronic periodicals, CD-ROM local area networks, and the myriad remote databases residing on 1000s of servers located worldwide require sophisticated teaching centres where students can learn by hands on experience. Discusses the creation of 2 Electronic Library Education Centers (ELECs) at the University of Arizona to meet this challenge. Provides an overview of the costs associated with developing the ELECs, reviews the technical changes experienced during the ELECs' 1st 2 years, and discusses the associated benefits to both users and librarians

    Abstract
Reviews the introduction and growth of the Internet with particular reference to examples of sources of information on chemistry available on the Internet and WWW. Cites the advantage of the Internet as a cheaper way of accessing online database hosts, such as DIALOG, CAS/STN and QUESTEL-ORBIT. Concludes with a discussion of the electronic publishing opportunities of the Internet, noting the 4 major components of such a development: peer review, quality control, copyright and language issues; the role and activities of publishers and periodicals of the future; the future role of the abstracting services, particular in the area of improved quality control; and the users of chemical information

Reports recent experiences with the publishing, via the Internet and WWW of ISI's biweekly newspaper, The Scientist; which was originally mounted on the NSFnet. Compares the use of the Internet for SDI by comparing Web searches via AltaVista with similar searches on CD-ROM. Predicts that future current awareness services and SDI services will be linked to electronic periodicals in electronic libraries. Concludes with a note on cited reference searching, a variation on the theme of hypertext searching, with particular reference to SCI and Web crawlers

    Abstract
The Internet has had a profound impact on the way that chemists communicate. Electronic periodicals, discussion lists, and other resources are fairly well established, but now 'virtual communities' are starting to appear. Discusses the concept of community both from a social and an economic viewpoint. In particular 3 communities for chemists are compared. These are American Chemical society (http://www.ChemCenter.org), Royal Society of Chemistry (http://www.chemsoc.org) and ChemWeb Inc. (http://www.ChemWeb.com). Concludes that all the communities are immature, but all are developing fast. Their success will depend on the extent to which they build up member loyalty and intellectual content over the next few years
