    Footnote
This Digital Library Tool Kit was sponsored by Sun Microsystems, Inc. to address some of the leading questions that academic institutions, public libraries, government agencies, and museums face in trying to develop, manage, and distribute digital content. The evolution of Java programming, digital object standards, Internet access, electronic commerce, and digital media management models is causing educators, CIOs, and librarians to rethink many of their traditional goals and modes of operation. New audiences, continuous access to collections, and enhanced services to user communities are enabled. As one of the leading technology providers to education and library communities, Sun is pleased to present this comprehensive introduction to digital libraries

    Abstract
Discusses the familiar problem of users are now confronted with the needs to impose order on myriad sources of information and to present them in an integrated way to users. Describes an attempt to provide such integration in the engineering field, Engineering Information Village, or Ei Village, produced by Engineering Information Inc. It resembles a WWW site, and integrates a traditional online abstracting and indexing service with access to WWW sites in the engineering field, contacts to engineering consultants, and access to other sources of interest to engineers. Explains how the metaphor of the village is carried though in the service and stresses the vetting process which seeks to guarantee that sources provided are authoritative. Also details the pricing of the service

    Abstract
In the light of InfoSeek's extremely lucrative contract with Disney, analyses how it has made such a success of developing an Internet business through advertising revenues, and the imporatnce of powerful search engines. Reports 2 other deals by Internet search companies: NBC's purchase of a minority stake in the portal Snap!, owned by the Computer Network, Inc. and Yahoo's acquisition of Internet Mall and Viaweb which enable it to launch Yahoo Store hosting commerce sites on behalf of other companies allowing them to sell over the Internet. Outlines the possible consequences for users of these developments and of the possibility of Internet startups selling up and quitting the scene

    Abstract
The Internet has had a profound impact on the way that chemists communicate. Electronic periodicals, discussion lists, and other resources are fairly well established, but now 'virtual communities' are starting to appear. Discusses the concept of community both from a social and an economic viewpoint. In particular 3 communities for chemists are compared. These are American Chemical society (http://www.ChemCenter.org), Royal Society of Chemistry (http://www.chemsoc.org) and ChemWeb Inc. (http://www.ChemWeb.com). Concludes that all the communities are immature, but all are developing fast. Their success will depend on the extent to which they build up member loyalty and intellectual content over the next few years

    Abstract
WWW search engines are not comprehensive in their searches. They do not search: Adobe PDF file or other formatted files, registration files, and data sets. Basic search strategies can give access to some of the hidden content. 2 databases are also available to provide access to the hidden information. Excite's News Tracker searches a database of selected online publications. ATI databases from PLS, Inc. presents access to a variety of Internet accessible databases that may require membership or the payment of a registration fee

    Abstract
A detailed description of how to use Java applets and Common Gateway Interface (CGI)/Dynamic Link Library (DLL) programs for Web publication of textual databases. The advantages of Java applets include low cost, flexible and visually appealing search interfaces, and the ability to be embedded in HTML pages, eliminating the need for Internet service provider permissions for their use. Highlights the FindIt family of Java applets from DoubleOLogic as one of the best product lines in the category. CGI programs may be written in Perl, Java, or some other language, and like DLL programs, must be installed on the server side. Notes that small-scale CGI and DLL applications cost from $150 to $8,000. Highlights Insight from Enigma Inc. as an excellent program at the high end of the cost range
