    Abstract
    Describes a design for ideal online subject and author thesauri. The subject thesaurus is a graphic thesaurus with a semantic network, so the spread activation assumption can be applied. The hierarchical relationship is broken into 3 specific relations, so automated inheritance can be performed. The associated relationship is separated with several specific relationships, so spatial recognition can function well. This thesaurus will provide variety and complexity to deal with uncertainty and will be a user constructed, user enhanced hyperthesaurus that serves as an analogue of the human mind. The author thesaurus is designed to show all authors which are alphabetically adjacent to a given author as well as other authors whose subject area is close to that of the given author

    Abstract
    Terminological definitions establish relations between terms and concepts by specifying the characteristics of each concept and locating it in the knowledge area. Using results from a largely automatic analysis of standardised (BSI/ISO) definitions, this paper demonstrates that technical definitions are rich in term content and that they contain a number of relations which can be used in the construction of a terminological control device such as a terminological thesaurus. Such a thesaurus will contain the keyconcepts of the domain, and can be used by technical authors to produce texts with greater consistency of terminology

Das Buch mit seiner Auswahl von über 150 Klassifikationen und Thesauri aus Naturwissenschaft, Technik, Wirtschaft und Patenwesen macht es zu einem brauchbaren Nachschlagewerk, zumal auch ein umfassender Index nach Sachgebieten, nach Datenbanken und nach Klassifikationen und Thesauri angeboten wird. Nach einer 13-seitigen Einführung (Kapitel 1 und 2) folgt mit dem 3. Kapitel die "Darstellung von Klassifikationen und Thesauri", im wesentlichen aus den Beschreibungen der Hersteller zusammengestellt. Jedes Teilgebiet wird mit einer kurzen Beschreibung eingeleitet. Danach folgen die jeweiligen Beschreibungen mit den Merkmalen: "Anschrift des Erstellers", "Themen-gebiet(e)", "Sprache", "Verfügbarkeit", "An-wendung" und "Ouelle(n)". "Das Buch wendet sich an alle Information Professionals, die Dokumentationssprachen aufbauen und nutzen" heißt es in der Verlagsinformation. Zwar ist es nicht notwendig, die informationswissenschaftlichen Aspekte der Klassifikationen und Thesauri abzuhandeln, aber ein Hinweis auf die Bedeutung der Information und Dokumentation und/oder der Informationswissenschaft wäre schon angebracht, um in der Welt der Informations- und Wissenswirtschaft zu demonstrieren, welchen Beitrag unsere Profession leistet. Andernfalls bleibt das Blickfeld eingeschränkt und der Anschluss an neuere Entwicklungen ausgeblendet.     Abstract
    Presents a state of the art review of the literature of expert systems in library and information science, involving exhaustive searches of all major LIS CD-ROM databases (LISA, ERIC, LiLi, INSPEC etc.) and bibliographies appended in review articles. The search retrieved 679 references, comprising 362 periodical articles, 180 conference proceedings, 63 books articles, 28 theses and 46 monographs. The growth of the literature peaked between 1989 and 1990 and subsequently declined after 1992. Over 1/3 (287) covered intelligent front ends and interfaces for online searching and retrieval, followed by applications in reference service (113), classification, indexing and abstracting (86) and cataloguing (7). The most productive periodicals comprised 6 titles, of which 'Information processing and management' topped the lsit: 43 authors were found to contribute between 5 and 35 articles each, hence contributing 32,19% of the total contributors. 382 of the publications were single author works, 172 were by 2 authors, 72 were by 3 authors and 49 were by 4 or more authors. Only 161 titles were expressive enough to reveal both the name and function of systems being developed
