- Abstract
- The concept of knowledge management is becoming increasingly prevalent in academic and vocational literature. Reviews the conceptual foundations of knowledge management starting with a conceptual clarification of knowledge relative to data and information. Discusses the characteristics in terms of forms, levels and categories of knowlegde. Against this background seeks a definition of knowledge management which is compared with information management

- Abstract
- Explores the concept of information democracy, noting that is has roots in several fields: political science; sociology; social work; communication science; and library and information science; butthat it is explicitly recognized only in library and information science. Focuses on the interplay between information technologies and society and on the theme of social equity and the distribution and use of information resources. When dealing with information democracy there is a focus on the information poor: a population that goes beyond the economically poor to include the aged, disabled, those in rural areas, and those in schools. Traces the historical origins leading to the concerns for social equity and information technologies. Notes that there is power associated with the control of information resources as well as with the control of economic and political resources. Looks at social equity and information technology in several broad areas

- Abstract
- State of the art review of browsing from many different multidisciplinary contexts, integrating the diverse literatures on browsing: library and information science (information searching); end user information retrieval and system design (database searching); consumer behaviour (store shopping); mass media audience (television channel switching); organizational communication; and wayfinding and environmental design. Considers what constitutes browsing, and what are the consequences of browsing. Attempts to identify the underlying common dimensions of browsing and the consequences of browsing in a wide variety of human activities

- Abstract
- State of the art review of the concept and practice of information resources management (IRM), particularly during the period 1986 to 1995. Notes the emergence of 2 approaches: the technological view emphasizing the technical aspect of IRM; and the integrative view which considers IRM as a convergent approach to information problems. Identifies the perceived barriers to IRM implementation: lack of well defined IRM concepts, practices, guidelines and tools; failure of organizations to perceive information as a resource; lack of measurement of information costs and value; and resistance to organizational change, such as the modification of organizational structures, policies, procedures, and the new roles for information professionals. Concludes by suggesting that there is a trend toward an integrative approach to IRM in terms of value added processes and considers whether IRM is finding its way as a discipline or subdiscipline within information science

- Abstract
- This annotaed bibliography lists materials dealing with information literacy including instruction in the use of information resources, research, and computer skills related to retrieving, using, and evaluating information. This review, the 21nd to be published in RSR, includes items in English published in 1995. After 21 years, the title of this literature has been changed from 'Library orientation and instruction' to 'Library instruction and information literacy' to indicate the growing trend of moving to information skills instruction. A few items are not annotated because the compiler could not obtain copies of them for this review

- Abstract
- State of the art reviews coveruing a range of topics relating to small business information work, including: the relationship between small businesses and information sources and providers available to them; the use of information by small businesses; the state of the information technology adoption process by small businesses; and changes in small business information use. Concludes with a discussion about future research in the field and includes hypotheses about the impact of information access and technology on small businesses. Pays particular attention to the likely changes that are likely to take place in the small business environment, involving: telecommuting; and the electronic delivery of customized, timely environmental scanning information that will permit small businesses to function like big businesses. Decries the absence of effective links between small businesses and the information brokering world but sees small businesses taking advantage of some of the new lower cost online services that are being offered through the Internet

- Abstract
- Traces the history and development of cognitive research techniques in information science and surveys current research that relies on the cognitive aspect. Examines information systems that make use of the insights of cognitive research, including experimental and proposed systems. Examples include systems that are designed to make appropriate demands on user cognitive processing. Points out that cognitive research in information science has focused primarily on users of information systems and to a lesser extent on information intermediaries. Design initiatives deriving from this research have been directed toward developing information technology that can adapt to the knowledge abilities, and styles of individual users and that make efficient use of the knowledge base and cognitive process of groups of users

- Abstract
- The Internet and related information services attract increasing interest from information retrieval researchers. A survey of recent publications shows that frequent topics are the effectiveness of search engines, information validation and quality, user studies, design of user interfaces, data structures and metadata, classification and vocabulary based aids, and indexing and search agents. Current research in these areas is briefly discussed. The changing balance between CD-ROM sources and traditional online searching is quite important and is noted
