    Abstract
    Addresses the question of why a technical services department would hire a metadata specialist and whether a metadata specialist is really a cataloguer in disguise. Evidence suggests that cataoguing departments are recruiting and training staff for positions requiring broader computer experience and an awareness of larger metadata issues. Also explores whether students are attracted to these positions and whether library schools are preparing technical services staff for these challenges

    Abstract
    Today's enterprises employ multiple information systems which are independently developed, locally administered, and are different in logical or physical design. To share information across organisational boundaries requires a global query system capable of providing online intelligent assistance to users. Conventional technologies such as schema based query languages and hard coded schema integration are insufficient. Develops a model assisted global query system using an online repository of enterprise metadata, the metadatabase, for global query formulation and processing with adaptiveness and open systems architecture. Presents a definition model for the metadata as a knowledge system. Analyzes the improvements of the new system in relation to the old.     Abstract
    This project's goal is to develop a catalog for a digitized collection of historical fashion objects held at the Kent State University Museum and to analyze and evaluate how well existing metadata formats can be applied to a fashion collection. The project considered the known and anticipated uses of the collection and the identification of the metadata elements that would be needed to support these uses. From a set of 90 museum accession records, 42 fashion objects were selected for cataloging. 2 metadata treatments were created for these 42 items using (a) AACR in use with USMARC formats, (b) the Dublic Core set of elements designed for minimal level cataloging, and (c) the Visual Resources Association (VRA) Core Categories for Visual Resources created for developing local databases and cataloging records for visual resource collections. Comparison and analysis of the formats resulted in the adoption of a modified VRA metadata format to catalog the entire digitized historical fashion collection

    Abstract
    The Day was held in Oct 96 to inform about developments in dexcription of electronic documents. Metadata are necessary to aid handling of electronic network resources. A workshop in Dublin Mar 95 compiled 13 elements needed to identify a document-like object, while the Warwick workshop Apr 96 proposed a framework for electronic entries with more metadata types than the Dublin Core. The Nordic Metadata Project aims to evaluate existing metadata format; develop the Dublic Core; make conversion of the Core to the Nordic MARC format possible; and set up a metadata search service for Nordic Internet documents. At the 2nd International Conference on Conceptions of Library and Information Science, Copenhagen Oct 96 a metadata structure for research profiles on Internet homepages was proposed

    Abstract
    Information professions identified the need for a set of standard metadata almost as soon as the WWW became a reality. Several initiatives have already identified the types of bibliographic information that would be necessary to describe and locate an electronic publication. The descriptors identified in the OCLC/NCSA Dublin Core are combined with those assembled by the Coalition of Networked Information and the Internet Engineering Task force to produce a list of electronic citation elements. Advocates embedding these citation elements within electrinic documents through the use of HTML<META>tags and other markup techniques. There is also a call to cataloguing librarians to contribute their expertise in information resources management to document being prepared for the WWW in order to influence the quality of electronic publication from the insides

    Researchers have developed a prototype of a system that uses metadata to guide their user in selecting document databases of interest. A standardized vocabulary is used to index the document sets and is also used to locate databases. Once a database is located, then freeform searches are aided by the metadata vocabulary to locate specific documents.     Abstract
    Defines metadata, which for librarians means catalogue records for printed publications, and the need for them in document retrieval. The existence of many different sources of metadata had led to a need for simpler metadata schemes and a stadardised exchange format. The 1st Metadata Workshop, held in Dublin, Ohio, reached consensus on a simple resource description record, known as the Dublin core set, with 13 elements, which can serve to unify various models. Lists institutions intending to use it. The 2nd workshop resulted in a proposal for a container record architecture comprising more and different types of metadata than a Dublin core record. The Nordic Metadata project, outlined here, aims to improve the knowledge transfer to the Nordic countries and allow them to paricipate actively in international developments

    The PICS, an initiative of W3C, is a technology that supports the association of descriptive labels with Web resources. By providing a single common transport syntax for metadata, PICS will support the growth of metadata systems (including library cataloguing) that are interoperable and widely supported in Web information systems.
