    Abstract
    By referring to existing prototypes and systems, in this paper the advantages and disadvantages of computer and multimedia technologies in the development of reference works such as dictionaries and encyclopedias are discussed. Some positive aspects of multimedia reference works are the possibility of accessing the same entry through a number of keys and research mechanisms, the possibility of 'navigating' through the semantic structure of the work itself, and even crossing the borders between different underlying structures. Some systems permit users to select the type of information they desire regarding a certain entry. This characteristics is particularly valuable in educational systems since it relieves users of the not so trivial task of autonomously extracting the information they need from a text which, because of the need for both conciseness and thoroughness, can be cryptic. In addition, some of theses systems not only include texts and illustrations but also audiovisual material, tutorials, and multimedia sequences with different educational and informative aims. Finally, the cost of, and time taken in, producing works of this type (except motion video production!), are potentially less than for analogous printed works with consequent repercussions on distribution costs and the frequency with which works can be updated. The major limits of multimedia dictionaries and encyclopedias are practical ones, such as the scarce availability and standardization of suitable hardware platforms.     Abstract
    Describes the work of the Working Group 8 of ISO/IEC Joint Technical Committee 1 subcommittee 18 (JTC1/SC18/WG8) which is developing information technology standards for use in text and Office systems. In 1986 the Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) was introduced as one of the key standards in developing systems for open information interchange. In Nov 92 the Hypermedia/Time-based Structuring Language (HyTime) detailed in ISO 10744 was introduced for the interchange of multimedia and hypermedia. They are currently working on a Standard Multimedia Scripting Language (SMSL) which will enable system developers to interchange multimedia scripts, probably using the UK developed Architecture Neutral Distribution Format (ANDF)

    Abstract
    Multimedia information systems, supplied on CD-ROM, are fast becoming a popular consumer product. A huge and growing range of titles is available from high street computer, electronic goods and book shops. Provides a compact set of evaluation criteria for these products, using established methods in the fields of human-computer interaction (HCI), computer-assisted learning (CAL), and information retrieval. The needs and desires of the home user are substantially different from those of the workplace or education user. Observation from product use, and an interview study with home multimedia users, suggests that factors such as aesthetics, levels of interactivity and information content may be crucially important in user satisfaction. Factors such as interface clarity and consistency may be less important than in workplace systems

    Abstract
    This paper considers the issues surrounding the fit between information systems and organisation structures. The paper uses philosophical ideas concerning knowledge and applies them to organisational design and information processing in order to encourage alternative perspectives and new ideas. This is achieved by a discussion of the issues surrounding organisational design and the impact of design on information processing; an overview of the ideas concerning the theory of knowledge proposed from both a rational and an empirical viewpoint and how these relate to other epistemological theories such as historicism and pragmatism. The paper closes with a discussion of the means by which philosophical considerations can assist towards new forms of information processing.

    The concepts of hypertext, multimedia and hypermedia are often confused, but can defined thus: hypertext is text with links, multimedia is synchronized media, and hypermedia is multimedia with links. Presents descriptions of systems for hypertext, multimedia and hypermedia. The computer storage and processing requirements for multimedia are orders of magnitudes greater than those for hypertext. Nevertheless, the hypertext model can be extended to deal with hypermedia by including multimedia synchronization capabilities. Information technology and its associated terminology should help people effectively compare experiences and thus have more influence on future developments

    Abstract
    A database management system is a general-purpose software system that facilitates the processes of defining, constructing, and manipulating databases for various applications. This article investigates the role of data management in multimedia digital libraries, and its implications for the design of database management systems. The notions of content abstraction and content independence are introduced, which clearly expose the unique challenges (for database architecture) of applications involving multimedia search.     Abstract
    Personal video recorders have the capability to change the media delivery industry fundamentally, and in this context, many believe the real international age of personal digital recorders (PDRs) will arrive with the use of "open" systems. The world reached an important milestone with the publication of the TV-Anytime Phase 1 specifications for unidirectional broadcast and metadata services over bidirectional networks. TV-Anytime is a worldwide pre-standardization body; this article gives an overview of the main features of TV-Anytime's metadata specification and its relationship to MPEG-7 and provides insight into ways two organizations concerned with standards work together. Phase 2 has since been completed and TV-Anytime has been adopted by various international standards organizations dealing with telecommunications and is now in the implementation phase.
