- A project to design a graphical user interface for the OKAPI online catalogue search system which uses the basic term weighting probabilistic search engine. Presents a research context of the project with a discussion of interface and functionality issues relating to the design of OPACs. Describes the design methodology and evaluation methodology. Presents the preliminary results of the field trial evaluation. Considers problems encountered in the field trial and discusses contributory factors to the effectiveness of interactive query expansion. Highlights the tension between usability and functionality in highly interactive retrieval and suggests further areas of research

- Abstract
- The presence of different interfaces to use online catalogues has caused difficulties, particularly for remote users. To tackle this problem 13 university campuses in New South Wales linked their online catalogues together to form a network called LIBLINK (a subnet of the Australian Academic Research Network, AARNET). The key to the success of the network is the user searching software, PINS (Practical Interface to Network System), a set of fourth generation language software tools. Suggests that LIBLINK can be a simple solution for other libraries around the world

- Abstract
- The University of Toronto hopes to encourage development of a campus-wide information system consisting of many walk-up-and-use components. The first component to be developed was an instructional program for users of the library's online catalog. The interface had to be attractive, usable by novices, and flexible enough to carry the content. Much effort was expended in ensuring that it met these criteria. User testing played an important role in the design of the interface. The design and testing of the system's entry point, navigation aids, and templates for spatial arrangements of information on the screen are discussed

- Abstract
- PACE (Public Access Catalogue Extension) is an alternative user interface designed to enhace OPACs. PACE simulates images of books and library shelves to help users browse through the catalogue. Reports results of a study in which PACE was tested in a college library (Vanier College), in a real operational environment, against a second generation test based OPAC: Best-Seller. Results show that a simple browsable retrieval interface performed as well as a second generation OPAC in terms of retrieval speed and search success. The overwhelming majority of students, however, preferred the browsing capability of PACE through the familiar metaphor of books and library shelves to a text based OPAC

- Outlines the progress of HyperLib, research which began in 1993 to develop a hypertext interface to the online catalogue and other databases at the University of Antwerp. A human factors oriented design methodology was adopted. A user survey was carried out. The project has focused on development of electronic guides and manual and interfaces to access an academic bibliography database and the UDC subject classification scheme. Evaluation is being carried out in 1995

- Discusses and illustrates the essential features of user-system interfaces designed to support end user searching. Presents examples of interfaces to support the following basic information seeking functions are presented: problem definition, source selection, problem articulation, examination of results, and information extraction. Argues that present interfaces focus on problem articulation and examination of results functions, and research and development are needed to support the problem definition and information extraction functions

- Abstract
- Browsing is an important aspect of the information-seeking activities of library users and is primarily visual. Second-generation OPACs lack the necessary visual characteristics for browsing. These characteristics may be best implemented through simulation of images of books and library shelves on the computer monitors. To mimic users' mental models of the real world may be costly, however, unless new interfaces can tap into existing sources of information. A possible solution may be found in using the information embedded in the MARC record pertaining to the physical description of a book. Public Access Catalog Extension (PACE) is designed as an alternative interface based on mental images of users and MARC records

- Presents a chart comparing the subject access features available on 4 different catalogues (card catalogues, GEAC, MELVYL and NOTIS) and develops a method for 'walking through' subject searches in different catalogues using a 'naive subject searcher' model in which searching behaviour is determined by 3 basic characteristics: a lack of understanding of how information is stored, indexed, and retrieved in library catalogues; a preference for the simplest available mode of interaction with the catalogue and a lack of any searching strategy or tactics beyond simple 'subject searching'. A complete 'naive Subject search' of the GEAC 8000-based GLIS on-line catalogue is presented, and sample NOTIS and MELVYL screens are discussed

- Abstract
- Information retrieval and exploration of work domains through databases and integrated information systems has become increasingly important in many modern work settings (as well as in libraries). The problem space of the users is defined on occasion by the dynamically changing requirements from their tasks and goals. it is argued that IR system design should be based on an analysis of the properties of the work domain, the task situation and the user characteristics. The paper describes a general framework for IR system design that has been used in the design of a library system. A special problem identified from use of the framework in domain analysis of fiction retrieval is treated in more detail: mapping the authors' domain structures to the domain structures expressed in users' needs in indexing and representation of fiction

- Abstract
- The Book House is an interactive, multimedia, online public access catalogue designed to support casual, novice users in information retrieval. It uses icons, text and animation in the display interface in order to enhance the utility of the system. A prerequisite for the design of The Book House was a cognitive analysis of users' information needs and search queries. The paper describes The BookHouse and discusses its relevance as a solution to the current OPAC developments
