    Abstract
Contends that quality in a catalogue is crucially related to its capability to deliver the services it is intended to provide: enabling a user to find a book of which the author, title or subject is known; and to show what the library has be a given author or on a given subject or in a given kind of literature. Describes changes in recent years which have implications for the choice of a retrieval system for library users. Discusses 2 types of problems experiences by users wanting to harness the potential of OPACs. These include: problems with the system itself. Describes the role of the cataloguer today which is essentially to interface the users with the retrieval system

    Abstract
Describes the function and problems of the traditional card catalogue compared with a computerised catalogue. Examines library cataloguing with the computer, linked to rules for subject cataloguing, as well as the oppor-tunities offered by computerised title entries, the transfer of data from outside, data base structure and indexing. Also looks at techniques for searching catalogues with computers, including search rules with Boolean operators, searches restricted to specific fields of free search in all fields for a vague concept. Other topics cover the essential principles of the OPAC, its information functions, mail box function and hardware configuration.

    Abstract
This paper reports on the successful introduction of a sophisticated online catalogue system at the library of the Scott Polar Research Institute, Cambridge, using the Muscat program package. The system provides to both end-users and library staff a choice between boolean searching on keywords and access using relevance feedback based on free text in English, mixed with UDC classification numbers. The system is implemented on an IBM 3084 computer. Significant benefits from the application of relevance feedback are reported with 10,000 records on file.

    Abstract
The study extracts a sample of zero-hit author and title searches from the transaction log of Northwestern University Library's online catalog. It analyzes why the searches failed, in an effort to understand the users' conceptual model of the online catalog.

    Abstract
Weaknesses within the system of LCSH are widely expected to be bypassed by OPACs as they open other subject access routes into collections. How LCSH perform under OPAC retrieval capabilities in direct comparison to title field subject searching is studies heuristically and quantitatively. Observed patterns of LCSH function are discussed, and conclusions about search strategy are offered

    Abstract
The paper will discuss the following points: What do we mean by a 'good' catalogue, which requirements to the database design must be satisfied for the system to act as a good catalogue, which types of database management system should we use, can a catalogue be distributed on several computers and how will this influenece the performance, availability, maintenance, etc., how does a 'union' catalogue consusting of several independant catalogues on different computers act as 'a' catalogue?

    Abstract
There have been several studies on the distribution of index terms, title terms, authors, and other elements employed in searching bibliographic databases. What is needed is to relate this information to the actual selection of terms for searching. This study analyzes data taken from monitoring the actual selection of terms for searching an online catalog at the School of Library and Information Science at the University of Western Ontario. Every time a term was employed in a search expression, a count in the dictionary file was updated. If the word was not in the dictionary, it was added. As a check on other studies, the rank distribution of terms chosen for searching was fit and found to be of a general Bradford-Zipf type. The main hypothesis was that high frequency terms in the catalog are the ones most frequently chosen in searches. The regular scatterplot of number of postings in the catalog versus the frequency in searching was checked and Pearson's correlation and Spearman's rank correlation coefficients were calculated. These data show that in general searchers actually tend to select the terms with a high number of postings for searching the catalog

    Abstract
The implementation of our online integrated catalog ACORN at Vanderbilt University Library has been a complex and time-consuming task. The authority control component represents an important portion of the effort. The authority file consists of approximately one-half million name, subject, series, and uniform title headings, the majority of which were supplied to us by a vendor, Blackwell North America (BNA). Authority work has been integrated into our cataloging routine successfully, new headings are being added to our database daily, and extant headings are being validated online. This paper will cover a description of how Vanderbilt selected the Northwestern Online Total Integrated System (NOTIS); the ongoing editing of the authority file following the BNA processing; the interrelationship of Vanderbilt University Library's three processing units, General Technical Services (GTS), Medical Library, and Law Library apropos of the authority function; and some of the policies and procedures drawn up by the Authority Control Coordinator with the assistance of the other librarians in Monograph and Serial Services.
