    Abstract
OPACs in an increasing number of libraries are now available using the Joint Academic Network (JANET). Access has tended to be obstructed, for the casual user, by the lengthy JANET addressing codes and varying log-on procedures required by each library system. Discribed how a communications and menu package on an IBK/PC can be used so that by merely pressing cursor control, return and escape keays, any user can gain access to any one of over 40 OPACs linked to JANET

    Abstract
Presents the results of research carried out to discover whether or not the ability to search an online catalogue using keywords is a reasonably alternative to a built-in cross reference structure for variant forms. MARC records were checked against LoC authorities for references from non-preferred headings. All keywords in these references were then compared, and matched, when possible, with keywords in any MARC fields

    Abstract
In 1987 the Austrian National Library and the University Libraries began to implement the Online Library Network System BIBOS which will offer also an on-line public access catalogue (OPAC). After discussing the basic design of the forthcoming OPAC, requirements of its features (access, search functions, output, interface to circulation control) are formulated.

    Abstract
The impact of automation on functional niches in cataloging is assessed. An attempt is made to redefine productive activity with regard to quantity and quality. Authority control and main entry practice are examined from the perspective of the humanistic values which automation makes possible and which at the same time need to be asserted.

    Abstract
Canadian library records, bilingual by statute, are created according to a common set of rules and standards. Subject access to the catalogue remains language dependent. Even searches by classification in some OPACs rely first on an alphabetical index as an entering key. Fully bilingual OPACs with authority control and reciprocal references in one file have yet to appear. Thus far the Canadian Workplace Automation Research Center has produced ISIR/SIRI with an online bilingual thesaurus. The National Library of Canada has developed withh DOBIS a bilingual system providing automatic linkages between records and authority files. But true bilingual searching (a search in one language retrieving records in both languages) could be achieved by a built-in automatic translation module. Total accommodation of diacritical marks by terminal keyboards and display monitors is also a challenge to be met.

    Abstract
In Nov. 1988 the Caltech Library made available to its users a new service which combines online access to journal citations located at Caltech with document delivery. This service evolved over several years, beginning with efforts to include the citation access in the library's integrated library system and culminating in the purchase of the powerful BRS/Search software to run on a small IBM mainframe specifically to support this project. Various decisions about implementation were made along the way, with no perfect solution being reached. Instead, the library learned to balance different factors against each other in order to dertermine the best solution

    Abstract
The authors have studied the transaction counts from two and one-half years activity at the public use terminals of the Ohio State University Libraries' prototype online card catalog to determine what search options academic library patrons use the most often and whether this pattern varies from that reported in major catalog use studies. The preliminary findings indicate significant differences in search strategy that may result from a unique user group that prefers to search the online catalog, more useful searches in the online system, or special search patterns imposed by the computer hardware itself. Both the different searches used by patrons and why they choose them should be important factors in the design of future online catalogs

    Abstract
This short guide describes the process for creating a CD-ROM based üublic access catalog. The authors admit that the material will be outdated by the time of publication, because product specifics change so rapidly. The report is useful, but not completely thorough. Disadvantages to using CD-ROM for public access catalog are listed, but existing methods to overcome these hindrances are not mentioned. The paper also touches on the possibility that CD-ROM-based catalogs may be more than simply an extra service, that they may become full-service catalogs in themselves

    Abstract
Contribution to a thematic issue devoted to subject control in on-line catalogues. Keyword searching with Boolean operators was impossible in the traditional on-line catalogue and its promised benefits in on-line systems are not yet clear. Reports on a survey undertaken at Brigham Young University library, Utah, which investigated this issue when the library was selected as a test site for keyword searching in the NOTIS on-line catalogue. Results of the survey were mixed. While keyword searching will require increased computer capacity for unstricted use, students, though content with the new tool, are not adept at using its sophisticated features and will require much more training than for the basic NOTIS on-line catalogue.
